Shaving, no matter what your father said about it, seemed more like a privilege than a nuisance with each passing day. The older you got, the more observant you grew, though, granted — it may or may not have been those sneaky Solomons genes that made you so vigilant and perceptive. Either way, you were well aware that the day you would have to start shaving your face wouldn’t come and the thought made the bathroom you were so used to seem like your greatest enemy. The mirror, you were sure of it, was there to mock you. Your father’s razor, safely hidden away in the cabinet drawer, was in all probability the mirror’s accomplice.

Then one day you have had enough. It was a rainy Saturday and your father liked to sleep in on Saturdays. His Birmingham business tired him out more and more with each passing month and though you have never met the Shelby brothers yourself, you thoroughly believed Alfie’s amusing stories about them.
