idk when we decided that explaining yourself shouldn't be part of an apology but like. if someone was a dick to me and apologizes but I still don't understand why they did it I'm not gonna feel any better

"Sorry for hurting your feelings earlier. I was trying to say x, but I guess it came across wrong. I don't think you're stupid."

or

"Sorry I snapped at you. I didn't get enough sleep last night so my patience is a little low today."

is a better apology than

"I want you to know that I am sorry that my actions offended you. I take full accountability for my actions and I am listening and learning. I hear you."

alright for the millionth time I'm seeing yet another author I admire talk about how they literally can barely afford to live & yet there are people openly admitting to pirating their books so, like

i guess it needs to be said again

pirating books is not the same as pirating your favourite Disney movie or whatever. book piracy kills author's incomes and can genuinely ruin someone's career

Textbooks and other research materials being paywalled by greedy fucking publishing houses who won't pay any of that money to the authors anyway? Pirate them.

Novel written by an author and published through a regular publishing house? BORROW FROM A LIBRARY or buy outright. Do not pirate. The sales/borrow numbers OUTRIGHT determines pay to the author, whether their next book gets greenlit or cancelled, etc.

Multi-volume series that you want to read the end of? BUY OR LIBRARY.

You can get ebooks and audiobooks through your library! Don’t pirate books!

I thought it would delight you to know that ants do have a sort of funeral mound for their dead

yes there is a name for this! necrophoresis is a process with social insects where the bodies are taken to a specific location on the outside of ( or within ) the nest - ants tend to keep them all in the same place, and the way an ant is signaled to be "dead" by its other members is through the release of a chemical called oliec acid

theres even been a few experiments where live ants were coated in the same chemical and other ants treated the live ants....exactly as though they were dead and tried dragging them into the pile

You telling me that Jack Black would not be 1000% down to be kidnapped by the muppets for a shenanigan, or possible a hijink?

Mr. The Frog still sends me more than “we all agreed a celebrity is not a people”

I'm trying so hard to make a joke about "this is so conservatives are afraid of reading to our kids". But I can't because my brain restarts and makes the dial-up loading sound every time she does the dress swish part.

"It's story time. *swish swish swoosh* It's story time. *swish swish swoosh*"

Love it. Can't get enough.

Anyways, yes. This is what drag story time is (and yes the skirt is designed to look like books and the titles on the skirt is either books she's written or books that inspired her).

I've been watching some videos about plot choices in DA:O and DA2 that I've never seen, and Merrill has this amazing line in the Gallows at the end of Act 3, if you side against her and the mages. It speaks to everything I adore about her character, and sums up the central conflict of the entire Dragon Age series so poignantly:

"If I leave these mages to die, or I help you kill them, what then? Magic can't be made safe, and it can't be destroyed. Fear makes men more dangerous than magic ever could."

That's the thing I love about Merrill. Out of all the mages we encounter throughout the series, on both sides of the mage-templar conflict, Merrill has always been the one who, despite her flaws, or maybe because of them, understands the hard truths about magic that almost no one else seems able or willing to accept.

This line in the Gallows reminds me of another line she has, a banter line with Anders after Justice takes over and almost kills that one girl.

Merrill: Are you all right?
Anders: I nearly killed an innocent girl. How could I be all right? There's no definition of "all right" that fits this state.
Merrill: I'm sorry.
Anders: You're sorry? For me? This could be you. You could be the next monster threatening helpless girls.
Merrill: Anders, there's no such thing as a good spirit. There never was. All spirits are dangerous. I understood that. I'm sorry that you didn't.

Merrill understands that magic is not safe, and will never be safe. And until the rest of Thedas is ready to accept that, the mage-templar conflict will never end. Because until you can accept that there's no silver bullet solution to the problem of dangerous spirits and mages who choose to hurt people, you'll never be willing to do the hard work it takes to co-exist.

Five asexuals are playing cards.

One starts to explain the rules:

I’d say no cheating, but there are already five aces at the table.

just a reminder that apparently anybody who isn’t ace cheats

this literally says the aces are cheating…………. because… you can’t have five aces in a deck………….it’s the Opposite of the second comment…

Reading comprehension on this site is piss-poor

How dare you say aces piss on the poor

If gender roles and stereotypes are contextual, so are standards of gender nonconformity. Some expressions might not seem particularly bold to you or me, but in the right context would completely change the way someone is treated. A man wearing plain, barely visible stud earrings could be considered risky. The same outfit can communicate entirely different things on a stage, on a college campus, on the bus or behind a front desk. A lot of it, maybe most, has nothing to do with clothing but your subtle mannerisms, as those of us who are still considered "flamboyant" no matter how we dress will tell you. Much of this does not translate in an online persona, and social media has given us a skewed view of just how "normalized' certain expressions are. It's all so RELATIVE!
