hi! this is my sideblog for my pets (mostly birds)

hi. my name is jay or whatever you like. im not an authority on anything but im always trying to improve my animal care and provide a good example.

> i tag "animal death tw", "animal injury tw" and "animal abuse tw" when needed. my tarantula is tagged "tarantula". other spiders are tagged "spider"

> this is NOT a space for terfs/bigots/shitheads of any kind. die

> there is no ethical breeding of parrots as pets. they are non domesticated and horribly suited to captive life. do not get a parrot because you want a pet and do not get a parrot because you saw one and thought it was cute. if you feel like despite everything you still want to add a parrot to your life, get one from a rescue organization or individual rehoming a pet, and be careful not to unintentionally support hobby breeders. and do your research and then do more.

> keep chickens instead!

> my pets are:

winston (cockatiel, hatched 2011, ~12 years old, brought home 7/13/2023)

he's back in a 'sitting on my shoulder all the time' phase and i can't say i'm a fan. like it's sweet except that our out of cage hanging out time is also the only time he will eat, so i have to keep removing him from my shoulder to remind him there's food. and i can't practice anything with him because he's either sitting On me or eating. also he yells at me every time i move my arm or scratch my head

i made a new tabletop perch. branches are sycamore (Platanus), debarked, scrubbed with soap, soaked in vinegar, and baked in the oven. the screws in the most accessible locations are stainless steel (the stainless steel screws i had were too long for some places, but i kept the others mostly on the undersides). i'm going to add a holder for food dishes too. this will be reserved for the future New Bird, and then eventually for both of them (manifesting that one day they'll be able to share).

its very carry-able, which is nice. it's much sturdier than the other one i made, which i'd hope for since i put more effort into it (and it's a sturdier wood).

there will definitely be another bird (in time) both for me and winston. he was definitely happier living with anothe flock member even if they didnt directly interact. and id get another anyway because i'll always have as many pets as i can care for at a time. it will be several months away at least because i have projects that need completed and work but at least its something to look ahead for

couple more months perhaps.

new batch of chop. i remembered to go a lot heavier on the greens this time since he gets more than enough orange stuff (squash and sweet potatoes, since those are his favorite and i have to dilute the chop with them quite a bit still so that he likes the texture). this has some squash in it so that it blends together properly (actually a yellow one this time) but i freeze pieces of cooked squash and sweet potato separately and add more each time i give him a serving so that i can control the proportions. in theory i'm slowly decreasing the amount of added squash as he gets used to the texture of the chop, but i'm taking my time so i don't make him hate it. that he eats this at all is kind of a miracle to me.

i keep forgetting that knowing step up is not, in fact, a default state, and actually requires practice and reinforcement in a variety of scenarios if the bird is not already extremely well versed in it. so anyway, when i remember to practice he gets pretty good at it.

new takeoff spot. he's still extremely clunky but at least he's keeping a straight trajectory here.

he's lost 2 primaries that he'd regrown since i got him. STOP IT you can keep those for like, a lot longer. cmon
