Beer and Mystery

@pdxbeerandmystery / pdxbeerandmystery.tumblr.com

The Northwest is dark and misty. But we have really good beer.

Hanging out with old people rules because after a while they trust you enough to confess to murder totally unprompted

Wait what.

Sometimes old ladies had to kick the ladder out from under their stepfathers when they were girls and that’s valid

oh, my little old lady murder story was her replacing the medication in her abusive husband's capsules with rat poison.

"back in the day, our grandmothers worked on their marriages and didn't get divorced!" nah, friend, they COULDN'T get a divorce so sometimes they killed their fuckin husbands. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My grandma murdered her first husband the first time he beat their daughter.

My college was next to an assisted living facility and one time we went over there to draw people’s portraits so we could get practice drawing older people. The lady I was drawing idly told me that she "dealt quite handily with her first husband” while making a stabbing gesture. Five minutes later she requested I make sure not to draw her double chin. I honored that request.

So when I was a child my grandmother told all these great stories about growing up in the Alaskan wilderness. Amazing bad ass stories about her and my great-grandmother. I recently asked my mom why my great-grandmother moved from Texas to Alaska in the first place. Turns out my Great-grandfather was abusive to my great grandmother for years and she lived with that until the first time he hit my grandmother, who was like three at the time, my great-grandmother got him very drunk and beat him to death then moved to Alaska to hide from the cops.

Men don't realize their life expectancy went up thanks to divorce.

Figure 9.3 shows that the number of males killed by intimate partners dropped by 71.4% between 1976 and 2002. Researchers and advocates for battered women attribute this dramatic decline to the widespread availability of support services for women, including shelters, crisis counseling, hotlines, and legal measures such as protection and restraining orders. These services offer abused women options for escaping violence and abuse other than taking their partners' lives. Other factors that may have contributed to the decline are the increased ease of obtaining divorce and the generally improved economic conditions for women.

:))))))))

I sometimes work in local hospitals and I can attest to this. The first time a sweet little old lady asked me if I wanted to hear about the time she was in the lock-up, I about fell over. "The lock-up, the hoosgaw! You know, jail!" She explained patiently. She'd run away to Montana with a logger, things had turned sour. Fortunately, her parents had money. The police called her daddy who came to Montana, wove a story about how his poor little naive girl had been taken advantage of, paid some "bail," and took her back home. "And that was my first son's father," she concluded.

big egg

That time we stopped by a friend’s grandparent’s mobile in the middle of fuck nowhere in the Southwest while driving across the U.S. and their gramma was so excited because she’d gotten on ostriach egg to try out and we all shared scrambled egg.

I was wondering if there would be something about ostriches in the notes, and lo and behold.

I still don't know where she got that thing.

please add your ethnicity/race in tags. if you chose no i’d especially like it if you added your reason why in the tags, or specify if you have a disability that interferes with washing your legs (if you’re comfortable sharing!). this poll is very nonjudgmental and i’m not trying to shame how anyone bathes themselves. this poll is mostly a way for me to see how people were raised and peoples mindset towards showering certain areas. that being said please be kind and nonjudgmental as well, thank you!

I first head about this on the internets a few years ago and showed it to a black coworker and we had one of those "this can't be true? It's SO scandalous!" conversations and finally decided there was one white coworker we could ask, and we did, and it was TRUE!
Later on, we were talking to our old mentor, and she suggested that maybe people who don't grow up without shoes in the summer or who grow up in places with paved roads don't feel the need, but I don't know, I just know my momma woulda probably made me sleep out in the yard if I didn't wash my legs.
Now the really important question is: what time of day/night do you shower?
It turns out that if you eat a red velvet cupcake in the dark, it still doesn't taste like chocolate.

Tumblr added a bunch of tracking shit to share urls, so now ill teach you how to get rid of them

if you copy a url by sharing on the website, the link will look like this

getting rid of tracking in these is easy, just delete everything after the question mark and you are golden

in the case for the app, its slightly more complicated

first you have to delete at. that appears before tumblr(.)com the other tracking shit on this one has a lot more info, so please, clean app urls. after the first set of numbers, there's a / you have to delete everything after it

a clean Tumblr url should look like this

blog safely

The Mystery of the Oakville Blobs

On August 7th in 1994, a strange gelatinous substance started to fall from the sky at 3am. In a period of three weeks, this would happen a total of six times. The substance would be described as “mushy” and “jello-like”.

Around the afternoon on Aug 7th, many residents of Oakville, WA became mysteriously and violently ill. Difficulty breathing, extreme vertigo, blurred vision, and an increasing sense of nausea were some of the symptoms experienced by these people for two months. Many animals that came in contact with these blobs got ill and died.

Samples of the blob were sent to a lab in order to see if there was a link between the illnesses and the mysterious rain. A lab technician examined it and found that it contained human white blood cells but couldn’t identify what it was or how it came from the sky. The sample was quickly sent to the Washington State Department of Health for further study. Mike McDowell, a microbiologist at the department, noted that it was teeming with two species of bacteria, one of which lives in the human digestive system. There was no explanation found as to what these blobs were and there are no samples of the substance remain.

Some explanations given were: -Human waste from an airplane (supposed to be dyed blue due to FAA regulations) -Naval bombing of a school of jellyfish (Oakville is 50 miles inland, lab tests contradicted this and it also happened 6 times over a course of three weeks.)

Oakville residents were skeptical of these explanations since prior to the incident they witnessed numerous US military air-crafts above their town.

the outfit you’re wearing rn is what you’re wearing when an angel possesses you to do the lords work but instead falls in gay love with a hunter and wears that outfit for the next 15 years, what are you wearing?

Kick ass angel wear: boots, black carhartts (the ones with tons of pockets), and a Warm Springs Skate Park tee. Because whats more angel warrior than raising funds to save native kids from trafficking, drug dealers, and the rest of that rez life shit that tries to drag you down?

Get yours here. Please.

to all my followers in the pacific northwest

Hey, guys.

So today I was at my local women’s march, and as per usual with these sorts of things, there were some counter-protesters. A couple of guys were waving around their Trump flags and all that, getting harassed a bit, but nothing too dramatic.

I did notice, however, that there was a guy hanging out with them with a flag wrapped around his shoulders, and I had definitely seen that flag before. Visually, it’s pretty innocuous, and I couldn’t remember what it stood for at the time, but I definitely do remember being told to avoid it like the plague, so I kept moving.

As soon as I got home, I looked it up.

I want all of you to repeat after me.

This is the Flag of Cascadia, or the Doug Flag. It used to stand for PNW pride and conservation, but it has been co-opted by Northwest Front, a white nationalist movement in the PNW.

Here’s another flag they use.

If you see someone flying this flag at a protest (particularly the bottom one, as it is used exclusively by NWF, where the Doug Flag is still used by some environmentalist groups), please know that that person is a neo nazi.

Do what you will with that information.

Punch them.

OK, I did like 10 minutes of research. The NWF appears to only use the bottom flag (blue/white/green vertical tricolor). I didn’t want to spend much time on their website, but that was the only one I saw. This article (I don’t know the site, magazine it’s from, but I didn’t see anything horrendous about them while googling) talks about the NWF flag and how it is thought to have plagiarized the colors of the Doug flag, but it is not the same.

Tons of PNW organizations use the Doug flag, from beer brewers to soccer teams to legitimate (non-nazi) political groups. Several soccer teams around here fly it. If anyone has further sources, I’m of course interested to see them, but I can’t find any evidence that the Doug flag is being co-opted by hate groups, so let’s not let them by abandoning it.

(Also, OP appears to have deleted the original post, for whatever that’s worth.)

Agreed - the Doug flag is still a strong symbol of PNW pride and environmental championing, it flies at Seattle Reign women’s soccer matches, and I personally witnessed a group of people at the Seattle Womxn’s March who were wearing the Doug flag as capes, waving a giant Doug flag alongside a giant rainbow Pride flag, and absolutely bellowing joyful encouragement for the protesters as we marched by. The blue and green represent the glorious natural environment of the Northwest. Don’t let Nazis co-opt this beautiful flag.

OP also apologised for the misinformation and attempted to delete their original post. They made an error in good faith. And, happily, the flag we all know and love isn’t being co-opted by white nationalist scum 💙🌲💚

Friendly reminder that November 2nd;Day of the Dead is NOT related to Halloween. It is its own holiday with its own meanings and traditions and I would appreciate it if you would respect that kindly.

You can make content about it, but please don't connect it with Halloween. That's like connecting the Fourth of July with Christmas. They're separate holidays with their own stuff going on. It's the same thing with Halloween and Day of the Dead, they just happened to be celebrated just days away from each other.

Ok but.
Connecting the Fourth of July and Christmas makes sense to me, as a North American Indigenous person.
