That last post I reblogged just reminded me of how, in the famous line atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale in Catullus 101, I always lose my mind over the accusative case of perpetuum - the line is usually translated something like “and so forever, brother, hail and farewell” or “and so in eternity brother, hail and farewell” but IMO those translations miss how the case of perpetuum signifies something that’s almost impossible to translate, a sense of endless motion, the notion that the memory of a dead loved one is not something static and unchanging but something that carries on into forever like a ship constantly sailing on against the next wave
