Okay listen, I don't want to talk about comparing the novel to the drama because at the end of the day each one needs to stand on its own merits and they're quite different. What I do want to talk about is why I love what the show did with WangXian and how it made me lose my shit entirely over them.

1. The invention of the Yin Iron storyline. While I don't necessarily feel like it was entirely resolved to my full satisfaction, as a plot device to develop teenage!Wangxian it was brilliant. It gave us the handfasting in the Cold Cave, their early Battle Husband scenes with the Dire Owl and the Dancing Peri, the incredibly gorgeous scene where Lan Wangji got ogled for a full minute...

It also allowed them to meet Song Lan and Xiao Xincheng before Yin City, lending a while lot more heft to that storyline. So that by the time we get to the Xuanwu Cave, the fact that LWJ has gone besotted and written a gross love song actually feels EARNED.

2. Equality Kink. Okay this is a highly specific thing for me, but this is what made me fall hard for them. There are numerous scenes at Cloud Recesses and beyond where both WWX and LWJ talk about how they are each other's match, and WWX explicitly tells JC that he sees LWJ as his equal. For someone as brilliant as WWX and as technically skilled at LWJ this is a HUGE DEAL. (Hello, my competence kink.) This becomes even more important post resurrection because even though WWX isn't physically as strong as he once was, they still treat each other as equals and badass Battle Husbands. (Ugh I love them.)

3. The Rain Scene. You know the one I mean, and I've talked about it in another post. But honestly, it's Peak Romance, and Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan deserve all the awards for ripping my heart the fuck out.

4. The Lantern Ceremony. I love that the drama explicitly shows us the moment LWJ falls in love. When the cute boy who's been annoying you makes you a bunny lantern and suddenly demonstrates he also has a strong moral backbone, poor Lan-er-gongzi doesn't stand a chance. Who doesn't have a big boner for Justice?

5. The Jinlintai Scene. Epic. Incredible. 100000/10. Have you ever seen two fools being so gay forward while 30 men point swords at them? Well you have now. The fact that WWX is like "I'm used to this, get away from me and save yourself" is already 💔💔💔 as fuck, but then LWJ opens his mouth and SPEAKS. (And I go feral.) He's very economical with words, so every one is precious, and the fact that he chooses to declare his devotion so openly (in front of both their families and all of society at large) and in a way that will be extra meaningful to WWX (by quoting his own words back to him), I'm just... My gay heart is honestly soaring. Bury me with this scene.

I could totally go on for like 10 more posts about how much I adore them and the way their dynamic is presented in the show, but I'm probably preaching to the choir by now. Anyways, they're equals, and they're in love, and it's beautiful. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

okay so. I am a smart adult with many important responsibilities. I have good taste and care about things that matter. for this reason, I’ve been trying to identify where in cql canon wangxian manage to fuck.

because they definitely do; I like a good post-canon getting together fic as much as the next guy, but it’s just not realistic.

allow them. it’s already been so long.

(just like this goddamn post turned out to be, let’s do a cut)

LWJ wants to be a dad

I love how much lwj wants to raise kids with wwx.

We have the first moment he realizes this in Yiling when he meets a-Yuan.

He is surprised to learn that a-Yuan is wwx’s son, but he immediately, with zero hesitation, just goes. No, he’s our son.

A whole new world just opened up for him. There’s nothing else on his mind. Head empty just how do I ask my not-really-even-friend-anymore with whom I am most deeply in love and who is currently being hunted down if I can adopt his son so we can raise him together?

Like, seriously, I cant handle this! Five minutes ago he had no idea he wanted to be a parent and now he’s imagining his future raising this child with wwx. Life sure is unpredictable.

The betrayal! He can’t believe wwx would do this. Wei Ying, this is NOT how we are going to raise our son. If you ask him which toy he likes best, you have to buy it for him. How can you be so heartless? We will have to have a conversation about this. For now I hope my glare conveys that this CANNOT happen again.

This is all he has ever wanted, to be hugged by his son with wwx as co-parent.

Obviously, we all know that he doesn’t get exactly that. he has to raise a-Yuan alone, and does an exceptional job, because he is a great dad and Lan Sizhui is the best boy.

But then we have the other moment when he meets Mianmian’s daughter.

He is so soft, he has such a soft spot for children. He just starts fantasizing about being a dad again.

I can tell you are being adorable again Wei Ying but I am too busy choosing the name of our future child.

They act like a married couple. Wei Ying is right in assuming that he can promise my money, everything I own is yours Wei Ying. And I am very glad my glare all those years ago worked. When you make a promise to a child you have to keep it.

This is too much. Wei Ying pouting so adorably in front of a little girl sure can’t be allowed. There has to be some rule about this. Wait, does this mean that I might see this all the time now I’ve decided we will raise a child? This time we might actually be able to raise a child together.

They are both amazing parents but i just love that every time lwj sees a child near wwx he just decides that they will be dads together. He can’t help it.

Wangxian Thoughts (4/?)

The first time I watched this scene, I didn’t really understand the reason behind the emphasis put on it. The whole scene lasts almost 3 minutes, which is a lot for a scene that is only about a chance-encounter and doesn’t even have any dialogue.

Sure, the emotional weight is there, but why should there be so much? This kind of extremely slow-mo scene is usually reserved for the main couple or very impactful moments.

But after I watched the following episodes, I went back to this scene and I realized something: this is the moment that changed everything.

Yes, one may argue that the fall into the Burial Mounds was what changed everything for Wei Wuxian and in a way, it was. But this is the moment that will lead him to leave his life behind in order to pursue the justice he promised he would always stand with.

In the span of a few weeks he is going to leave his home, his family and the world he grew up in in order to protect Wen Qing, Wen Ning and the other Wen clan remaining members. Not to mention, this will be the reason why he will go openly against all the other clans for the first time.

Yes, Wei Wuxian has always been different from the other gentry, has always spoken his mind. But after he meets Wen Qing here and comes to know about Wen Ning, he takes an extremely radical position and is not willing to negotiate anymore.

Who knows what would have happened if he didn’t turn around on that crowded street? If his eyes didn’t meet Wen Qing? If their lives just merely brushed once again with no consequence?

Would he have pursued the demonic path to that extreme? Would he have turned against the clans eventually? Or would there be a completely different page written into the history books? One where the Yiling Patriarch doesn’t exist?

I just find it beautiful (and heartbreaking) how Wangji immediately takes responsibility for Wuxian as soon as he comes back from the underworld.

He knows by now Wuxian is not that good at taking care of himself and he’s not going to let the same mistake repeat over and over again, so he just decides he’s going to be the one who will take care of Wuxian, whether he likes it or not.

And he does take care of him. Perfectly, in fact. Not only does he take care of Wuxian, he anticipates his needs (like when he fixed his flute) and you can see that Wuxian is confused at times, but also extremely comforted by how protective Wangji is of him.

Because let’s face it, Wuxian is used to being the protective one, the one who has the weight of the world on his shoulders, even when the people he loves don’t know what he’s done for them (like Jiang Cheng).

This is the first time someone is taking care of him without him asking for help and without expecting something in return.

Wuxian has known little kindness in his life and certainly none in the years leading up to his death. By that point, he had no family, no clan and everyone would rather see him dead than try to understand him.

The Wen Clan was a found family, but he was the one taking care of them, not the contrary. So no, Wuxian probably doesn’t remember what it feels like to depend on someone else because he never had the luxury to do so.

And yet Wangji has no hesitation and will not negotiate. He immediately makes himself dependable for Wuxian. He’s not going to lose him again. He lost his chance to protect him once and he’s not going to repeat that same mistake.

He knows that very well and immediately acts on it without second thoughts, losing all the hesitation and maybe even a little of the discretion he had 16 years before. If Wuxian is wounded he will touch him or undress him, if Wuxian can’t walk he will carry him even if it’s “embarrassing”. Whatever Wuxian needs, he shall have.

And Wuxian’s reactions honestly have me in tears most of the time, because he doesn’t think he deserves any of that. But that’s exactly the point: Wangji knows Wuxian doesn’t love himself. So he decides he will love him enough for the both of them until he does.
