You're right, 1000% right. Many people work times of day that are way more dangerous to drive during because of the quantity of people who don't have a choice but to work 9-5, when many would rather work nights or afternoons, and everyone less hours overall, with less fear as motivation for being on time. Imagine if being late by five minutes and losing your job.... Didn't mean you couldn't still pay rent and buy food? Road rage would go down immensely. Even those that need more money than UBI would provide (say there's several kids or you just have expensive hobbies or something-I'm hoping a world with UBI also includes Universal Healthcare) would have so many more OPTIONS if the need for money became less urgent.
You could take a few months off and find a job that treats you like a human being- hell, it'd FORCE EMPLOYERS TO DO SO, or they wouldn't have staff since they're not being strong armed into working any job that they can afford their bills on.
I am willing to bet money that it would also reduce drunk driving, if people had the freedom to work later in the day or miss days if they wake up still drunk, they don't have to put others at risk to pay their bills. Some people drink or do drugs at work just to put up with it-if they had the freedom to choose somewhere they didn't despise to work, they could have fun at home or at a friend's fucked up instead of operating machinery (EVERY delivery driver y'all. I was one, we were always fucked up on the clock). Then maybe it'd have the stress relief they started using for, and may not need to do it as much to get by, further reducing their costs spent and allowing them more money to put towards shit that makes their life better! I know when I did a lot of drugs to get through work it pissed me off that I never had money to buy like, new clothes and comfort items.
There's so many subtle ways UBI would improve the world. I desperately wish they'd give it a chance in the US. More broadly than just a single city or state.
It'd also mean people could miss work to get their car repaired, which means cars that are in better condition on the road. I know at least two people in my life that are postponing car repairs because they need it to get to work.
