This is a chameleon with a hox gene mutation.
If you look carefully at her ribs, you’ll notice that some of them are loops.
Hox genes are a group of genes that control the segmentation of the body. They make sure that repeating elements of the body, such as the vertebrae, and the ribs develop correctly.
Mistakes in the way hox genes are activated cause mistakes in the formation of these repeating elements in the skeleton. They start repeating too often, or not enough, or they dont separate correctly, like in this girl.
This chameleon had one such condition. She died of an unrelated infection, and her unique genetic condition was not known until she was stained.
This girl went out in a large mystery box last year. Mystery boxes are blind boxes of specimens sold in the shop.
