you sent me this literally while i was eating a mustard sandwich (sandwich that has nothing but mustard) so i feel like you knew somehow
Your book vs show post is missing the fact that Book Edwina is intuitive and clever, and Book Kate underestimates her. She’s actually *not* less suspicious and impressionable; Kate just thinks that because Edwina has always had a lovely, polite disposition. Edwina’s the FIRST person to understand that Kate and Anthony are into each other, before either of them realize it. After the Serpentine, when Kate tells her that Anthony said he was awful to her because “he couldn’t help himself,” Edwina bursts out laughing and figures it out. “Oh, what a tangle!” She knows before anyone, which is why she teases Kate about being nice to Anthony at Aubrey Hall, why she brings up Kate when she’s walking with Anthony to the Pall Mall pitch, and why she and Colin (the Bridgerton family matchmaker!!! Who also just spent the Pall Mall setup time talking up Anthony to Kate!!!) go back inside after Pall Mall and leave K&A alone at the lake…during a time when marriageable young ladies and eligible gentlemen weren’t allowed to be alone together. Both Edwina and Colin knew that their siblings were into each other and “set them up,” so to speak. Show Edwina is just oblivious. One character being intuitive and one character being oblivious means that the two Edwinas are very, very different characters. The show took a skeleton of Book Edwina (her being a reader and the idea of her being the one most suited to marrying well), and then fundamentally altered the character.
I’ve already said that the fact that book!Edwina is not emotionally involved with Anthony allows her to be more aware and questioning about what is going on around her. Show!Edwina is constantly seeking Anthony’s approval and attention, she doesn’t think about anything else when they’re together, but this doesn’t mean that she is not able to be observant in other circumstances*. Kate has told her several times that she doesn’t want or plans to marry (I think that Book!Kate considers the idea of marrying but I’m not sure HOWEVER I do know that she is ALWAYS talking about Anthony, way more than show!Kate. So it was kinda easier for book!Edwina to find out). It’s just not logical for show!Edwina to suddely figure out that Kate is falling precisely for the man that is courting her and the man that she says despises so much. Edwina trusts Kate and respects her wishes of not looking for a husband. Even more, at this point Kate herself is sure she hates Anthony too. And I don’t think trusting Kate makes Edwina oblivious, *since the show gives hints of Edwina noticing that something is off with Kate through the season. We as viewers (along with Daphne, lady Danbury and lady Violet) are supposed to know about Kathony and their feelings right from the start, but Edwina isn’t. For example, she believes that Dorset and Kate would make a good couple because, again, Anthony is not an option for her sister but Dorset could be. Edwina cannot conceive Kathony at this time.
Show!Edwina is clever. She is 18 years old and knows latin, greek, french, she an avid reader, she plays more than one instrument. That’s how the character is built. Edwina trusting her sister doesn’t make her stupid either, maybe naive and accustomed/spoiled (can’t think of a better word rn, sorry!).
Don’t tell me book!Edwina is not impressionable when the only reason behind falling in love with Bagwell is him being a scholar. She had this idea of marrying a man who reads and fell for the first guy who met the requirement.
You can’t fairly compare two characters that haven’t experienced the same things or situations. The writers changed Edwina’s experiences (and feelings towards Anthony) but I maintain that the essence of the character is the same. Both Edwinas are sweet, clever, the perfect ladies, they love and want the best for their sister/mother and would like to marry for love.
We have what is written/shown and everything else is assumption.
Prime example of people seeing only what they want and acting like context doesn’t matter.
As my very eloquent friend said, the plot is different and so Edwina acts differently:
1. Kate & Anthony were hostile to each other in front of Edwina: Kate saying he doesn’t believe in love, the horse races, the horse gift scene, Pall Mall. Edwina sees they can’t stand each other and tries to bring them closer (hunt, dance). Wanting your family and fiancé to be on cordial terms is pretty standard.
2. ANTHONY made very obvious romantic gestures to EDWINA: declaration at poetry contest, invited her to his family home, had chaperoned convos with her, PROPOSED, “my beautiful bride,” hastened the wedding. He presents himself as the perfect man to a girl 10+ years his junior. She was meant to fall for his ruse. Book!Anthony acted indifferent towards Edwina and she didn’t care for him either (so she went from his fiancée to matchmaker in 0.1 second), unlike Show!Anthony.
3. We also saw the immense pressure Edwina put herself under for Anthony to propose to her. She was focused on being perfect for half of s2 and the rest was her giddily preparing for the wedding (again after Anthony proposed). Forgive her for not being omniscient like the audience or knowledgeable like Lady Danbury or Violet in her first foray in love.
4. Kate is secretive about her true feelings and believed that she would leave for India. All Edwina knows is Kate’s set on leaving. As Charithra explained “The only way I can describe it is, I would never think my dad would do anything to break my heart. Like, it wouldn’t even occur to me that my dad would behave in a way that would hurt me. It’s the same situation. It wouldn’t even occur to Edwina that Kate would be in love with the same person she’s in love with. You don’t look for something that you think is impossible.” It’s normal to not suspect your fiancé and sister having an affair??
Again and again, Edwina is blamed for being oblivious/cheated on instead of holding the man who led her on accountable and to a lesser extent Kate for lying by omission. Edwina was young woman who trusted the people around her, including her mother, sister who raised her, sponsor and fiancé.
After reading this, I stumbled upon a new perspective on the “half-sister” line.
It’s always seen as Edwina disowning Kate as a sister.
But in this light when everything that’s happened to her is listed down like this, maybe she said that because that’s how Kate’s actions made her feel. The lies. From her perspective, she was the one treated as a half-sister. And because she is not omniscient like the audience, she did not see how Kate agonized in every step/ lie.
sam levinson writes sex like a virgin frat boy who brags about having it a lot to try and impress his bros. like "yeah dude last night i put a napkin on this chick's face shit was craaaaaazy hot" y'know what i mean. american pie type sex
it's crazy to me that he's married. i know his wife is a pretty accomplished producer and she co-produces all of his shit and she's the one who read him the rolling stone exposé to which sam responded "i think we have the show of the summer" or whatever (they did not) so odds are she just has hollywood producer brain and thinks that her husband is like a genius or something. either way if i were married to a man who kept creating shows about scantily clad very young women often in sexually abusive or compromising positions and saying they're scantily clad to support the themes of the work i'd request at Least the password to his desktop
Suppose I desire something different. Suppose I want a different life. You are not the only one.
ELOISE AND BENEDICT BRIDGERTON IN BRIDGERTON
THERE WAS ONLY ONE CHAIR because presumably, the queen doesn't understand Eric's fascination & servants keep away out of respect for him. So, there's no use having chairs around since nobody hangs out with him here. The implication that he must've felt alone for years until, well, her. They're twin souls. I'm gonna sob in the corner real quick.
AND
This should not be applauded, but that mofo knelt on the floor afternoon 'till evening so she can sit (or not, she might be sitting on a box here) on the only comfortable seat in his library. like a fucking gentleman.
A prince on his knees, literally and figuratively. gddamn it, disney.
RINA SAWAYAMA Live @ Glastonbury Festival 2023 introducing her song "STFU!"
Yknow what. I’m just gonna say it.
It’s about time we have a fictional princess who actually enjoys being a princess.
She enjoys the politics. She enjoys the diplomacy. And she enjoys the balls and banquets and attention and pretty dresses and that doesn’t make her a dumb shallow bimbo or some regressive anti feminist handmaid or whatever the kids say these days about women who don’t fall in line with their Strong Female Character power fantasies.
All the princesses urging for ‘something more’ that’s all fine and good but I’m ready to see a princess who appreciates that being a princess is already a lot!
Honestly I’m also down with a princess who understands that not getting to, like, freely pick your husband is part of the deal. You get to eat essentially as much as you like, are filthy rich, and, even if you live in a male-line-only type of monarchy, you have the ear of the ruler of the country, who’s either your father or your husband. Your literally one of the top five most powerful people in the nation in any constellation. The only people who officially outrank you are your parents - who will die eventually - your husband, and possibly the equivalent of the pope. Have some bloody gratitude, you know?
Also your proposal would make for a dope story because doing politics and diplomacy was what being a noble lady was all about, and the “ugh I have to dress up pretty for the male nobles who are slobbering all over my hand when greeting me and no one takes me seriously because I’m a woman” was, like, never true in at the very least European monarchies. Not sure about other countries. I know the Chinese Empress and Mother of the Emperor were a huge deal, at least, but that might have just been those two, not noble women in general.
Exactly. Like surely there were some princesses under very oppressive circumstances but the vast majority had access to some of the best education available at the time, weren’t dying of starvation or cold, wearing the best crafted garments available, and yeah had a lot more influence than people today give them credit for.
Princess: "Oh I wish I was born a commoner so I could do as I please and marry for love."
Peasant girls who can't do either:
Make this a 40k post then, I’m not a coward
Side Note To Fan Fic Authors
Here’s the thing.
I read a lot of scripts. A lot. From professionals to aspiring writers to complete newbies. Features and pilots. Specs and treatments.
And 8 times out of 10 the fan fic that I’ve read over the last, oh, 15 years is leagues better than this stuff. It’s more inspired. It’s more compelling. It’s genre bending and creative and heartfelt. It’s well-paced and intense and funny and sexy and meaningful. It’s smart and thoughtful and good. It’s novel-quality. Better than, sometimes.
Rare is the script I don’t want to put down, but how often have we stayed up until 3am to get to the last chapter of a 100k fic? And it’s not even a fan fic author’s day job. This is what they do on the side. In their spare time. For free.
So my point is, fan fic authors, you’re good. You’re good writers and great storytellers. I know it doesn’t always feel like it, especially if you’re one of the authors who’s not a BNF and doesn’t get the notes/hits that a few do. And because some people still view fic as “not real writing.” You guys know the shit that gets made into movies. You’re better than that. So be better than that. If writing is what you think want to do, then just know you’re already doing it. You’ve already started.
And you’re more talented than you might think.
no but this is so true actually and i feel like we could all benefit from internalising the message that romance can’t be strictly classified by a concrete set of rules bc it doesn’t always look the same for everyone and only the people involved get to define their relationship
‘aight, mate, we’re done! Looking like a proper little punk now, eh?
Whoops another Danny crossover I mean it was obvious UGH I LOVED new spiderverse
Having thoughts about Valerie again.
But alas, her character development and depth in canon is.... well...
On a surface level Badass Ghost Hunter is a great character hook. Valerie is so cool! Her hunter character design is eye catching and attention grabbing. It's a great design. But beyond that, I want her character to have so much more depth. I want to know more about what kind of person makes the decisions she makes. Because honestly, she deserves it.
So I suppose we DIY this shit, huh?
Who's got some headcanons about Val's non ghost related hobbies and personal life?
The goofy stuff her dad's done since she was little that she pretends to be annoyed about but secretly loves? The things her dad does that she actually finds annoying? Her small joys? Her favorite snack? Her favorite season of the year and why? Her favorite movie or music genres? Her celebrity crushes? Her hopes and dreams for the future? Her best classes in school? Her dream job? What are your headcanons for her extended family? Does she have any aunties and uncles? Younger or older cousins? Her favorite animal? Her opinions on crocs? (The shoe or the reptile) Does she have any odd phobias? (like crocs) What motivates her to get out of bed every morning? What helps her fall asleep at night? What keeps her up at night? (Besides the ghosts) Does she prefer tea? Hot chocolate? Coffee? Cold drinks?
Tell me all the little details you've thought about. The fun ideas and sparks that can make her more.
I feel cheated. no one on Reddit told me that tumblr is a serotonin factory. Keep liking and reblogging my posts please thanks
Just don't fly too close to the sun.
Throw me to the sun and I’ll get it pregnant
Fellas (gender neutral), you heard him. Ready the catapults.
rewatched into the spiderverse so i’ll be ready when i finally get to watch across the spiderverse soon-ish and the leap of faith scene still goes so hard

Not dumb and an absolute dream. Just imagine people whining to at a regency ball 🤣🤣
You see the vision I’m trying to manifest
