you can really tell that (at least on my server) a good chunk of those being fatphobic in global are children because things were very positive for a while then bam school ending time and suddenly everyone is up in arms and it really goes to show how normalized fatphobia is when you have literal kids being genuinely nasty about the characters not being thin enough when the thinnest option is actually a very average body shape

Just as another random musing, I think SSE is trying to pull off a Realm Reborn just without the ability to shut off servers and hold subscriptions like Squinix could and that doesn’t get enough credit. And you know, maybe the team should talk about it more, but it is a daunting task.
If you’re not familiar, when Final Fantasy XIV first came out, it was widely panned. Folks did not like it very much at all. So Square Enix was like “alright, we’ll fix it.” And they closed the servers with a canonical apocalypse that exploded the game world, took the servers down for three years, and completely remade the game. And now it’s one of the best MMOs on the market.
This isn’t to say that SSO is gonna become the best MMO on the market but the team seems to be trying to do the same thing without the funding to just put the game on pause for three years. The state machine updates, player update, horse progression, inventory overhaul, all of the big things the team has talked about have been structural overhauls to the game to fundamentally rebuild it from the ground up. Same coat of paint sure (though there are a lot of updates), but completely different, more accessible hardware.
This isn’t to say it’s perfect or that SSE has handled it amazing 100%. But the team is trying to fund effectively SSO 2 from what we can see and have been told. It doesn’t excuse everything but the attempt is worthwhile and I think pointing out this ship of Theseus progress on the game is a considerable amount of work, particularly for the devs doing the ship rebuilding.
I‘ll never understand how I was allowed to watch Detective Conan where there‘s literally murder on screen and stuff, but had to wait until I was 12 to watch the Harry Potter Movies which I already knew the plot of ‘cause I heard all of the audiobooks at least twice at that point.
