Pixels and Palaeoplushies

@palaeoplushies / palaeoplushies.tumblr.com

My name is Rebecca. I'm a palaeoartist with a background in geology and palaeontology. I make and design scientifically accurate soft toys of extinct creatures. I also try my hand at digital painting, sculpting and other arty things. On top of my own creations, I share lots of palaeontology related content as well as photos of my pet rats and my aquarium.

What is Palaeoplushies?

  • Palaeoplushies is a small business run by me, and my sister Sarah helps make things too! My website is www.palaeoplushies.com
  • We make soft toys/plushies of both extinct and living creatures. It’s a very broad subject matter, I know. It’s usually just animals that interest me (Bex)!
  • Plushies are made by hand in small batches- they sell out quickly! Designs usually return but there's no set schedule.
  • You can sign up for restock notifications for individual plushies on my website.
  • I cannot reserve plushies for people, take payment in advance or personally email/notify individuals when things restock.
  • We are a very small team. I handle all the product design, manufacture, customer service, paperwork, packaging + posting. Sarah does a lot of sewing too!
  • I try to get all orders fulfilled and posted within a 7 working days of the order being placed. Sometimes there might be delays, but I’m trying my best.
  • I'm based in the UK, and world events have meant that shipping is often slow/delayed by customs. This is out of my control, I'm really sorry!
  • Do I take commissions? No* *Unless it is for Sci-Comm work, in which case I would love to help you out! Got a model organism you'd like to show folks "in person"? I can do that!

tbh i don't really get why we divide the oceans into different oceans because they're all connected it's the same ocean

no metaphor here just pure confusion...is there a line where one ocean stops and another begins? or is it like a smooth gradient of percentages of one ocean shading into another ocean?

Yes, there is a line. There are confluences you can see and touch and they are NOT subtle in the slightest.

That's the Atlantic and the Caribbean on a particularly pronounced day.

This is the Indian and the Pacific. It's not always this obvious everywhere but the dividing lines are very much there.

Oceans have their own properties as far as temperature and salinity and unless something like a storm or a current forces them to mix they won't. Mostly this applies to vertical mixing and it gives you things like thermoclines and haloclines but water is wierd and won't mix horizontally either.

The ocean basins tend to have their own currents that go in a circle and define that ocean, and those patterns mix the water within that ocean. Like a washing machine.

The Caribbean has a little loop of its own that not on this map, but that current keeps that ocean pretty internally consistent. It's got clear warm water because of the shallow bowl of limestone sand it sits in. Where it meets the Atlantic with wildly different conditions the water is traveling in opposite directions, and it acts kind of like an oncoming lane of highway traffic. Species that have adapted to a narrow band of temperatures and salinities (most fish) can't cross, while species with a stronger homeostasis hang out there on purpose, (marine mammals, turtles, sharks). Plankton, that cannot control their horizontal movement in the water column, are held in their home territories by these barriers.

This is cool as fuck

Below the poll is a series of animal images labeled A through J. A is the least close to the birds we have today; J is the closest. If you encountered these animals in the wild, which would you call birds? If you pick a higher up option, then that means you consider all the below ones birds as well - so if you pick A, then BCDEFGHIJ are all birds. If you pick J, only J is a bird.

PLEASE REBLOG THIS SO IT CAN LEAVE PALAEOBLR. I NEED PEOPLE WHO DON'T RECOGNIZE THESE ANIMALS ON SIGHT TO VOTE.

I apologize to all of y'all with vision impairments for whom this poll is inaccessible. Alas, this is an experiment, and I cannot name the taxa. Thank you.

Sometimes I forget I'm an artist and what I am doing is art. It's just what I am compelled to do and make. I need to create. I got all these creatures stuck inside of my brain I need to get out and I can only do so by making plushies of them

I’ve made some Dearc sgiathanach! This plush is made from a custom printed soft velvet pattern of an original design, hand crafted and stuffed with plastic rods in the wings to give them a more realistic shape. Popper/snap fastenings on the wings mean that they can be folded or outstretched realistically. They have plastic eyes with secure backings. Plushie Dimensions: Both variants are 51cm from nose to tail tip, 100cm wingspan. Description: Dearc sgiathanach is a species of long-tailed Pterosaur from the Middle Jurassic of the Isle of Skye. It’s name is Gaelic for both “winged reptile” and “reptile from Skye”. They’re for sale over on my website; https://www.palaeoplushies.com/shop/dearc

Making a bunny into a thylacine!

I’m at it again with extreme Jellycat modding! I love my bashful thylacine Patchouli so much, I wanted to have a small version too. This time I thought I’d record the process a bit more!

Plushie surgery under the cut! It’s fairly extensive, including removal and rebuilding of a whole face, so be warned! (It all turns out well in the end though!)

Phyllis Shafer, born 1958, Buffalo, N.Y.

“My method is to paint directly from the natural environment…..I believe that a kind of transcendental essence lies at the heart of all natural forms and objects. There is a concept in Zen Buddhist painting known as kiin-seido, meaning “living moment” or the immediate, intuitive expression of a subject’s essential nature. While I am not a practitioner of Zen Buddhism, I am interested in this concept as it relates to our experience of landscape. My artistic goal is, through the process of painting, to distill and crystallise that essence and the vital rhythms that animate it.”

I’m very tired. you probably heard that Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Dam to slow Ukraine’s counter offensive. here’s something I didn’t quite realize: since this February, the Russians operated the dam in juuuuust the right way so that as much water would build up as possible when the snow melted and spring showers started. and then they blew the whole thing up.

40,000 people may need to be evacuated. I don’t really have the energy to say anything else right now.

Hospitallers Medical Battalion: actual angels can confirm. they’re combat-zone medical services - you know how humanitarian groups like MFS and Red Cross have to pause operations due to the Russians fucking shooting at humanitarian zones? yeah, these guys don’t pause for bullets, they fucking walk into them and they bring out anyone they can.

Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation: you can choose from a number of various fundraiser projects here, if you’re feeling particularly picky. for those of you who balk at the idea of supporting anything military just please remember that things like vehicles and drones aren’t just for military use, they’re also for evacuation and finding the wounded and they’re fucking vital.

KSE Foundation: similar to the above, KSE has multiple projects you can choose from to donate to. looking at it right now, one of the projects with the lowest amounts of money raised thus far - despite being started in April - is Seeds for Ukraine, which will help Ukraine recover from the ecological devastation Russia has been wreaking (and with Ukraine, the countries that rely on Ukraine’s grain exports that Russia keeps trying to steal).

Come Back Alive: do these guys even need the introduction? they’re Come Back Alive. I’m kissing all of them.

United24: Zelenskyy’s brain child, and the official fundraising platform of Ukraine. Mark Hamill recommends the fundraisers for drones in particular.

UAnimals: Nova Kakhovka’s zoo got… pretty much completely swept away. all zoo residents except the birds have drowned. UAnimals has tried throughout the occupation to keep the animals safe, and they’ve been reporting on the status of the zoo. I don’t really know what to say except that I hope they’re able to save the pets and strays in the towns along the river.

  1. Ukrainian FireFighters Foundation
  2. Helping To Leave
  3. VOSTOK SOS

And another good list, every name here will put your money to good use.

@copperbadge, this is the general “help for Ukraine for ppl that don’t know where to donate outside of Ukraine”.

Had a rare request to reblog outside of RFM and the issue seemed urgent enough I wanted to do so. This is post two of two; thanks for notifying me and collecting these resources!

Down a Rabbit Hole I Went

I screwed up. I didn't think that using an ancient language on a piece of tumblr merch was necessary but I forgot what site I was on :) . This is tumblr, of course it has to be in linguistically accurate cuneiform. I went and hired an expert on Ancient Semitic Languages and Cultures. There aren't as many as you'd think that are willing to translate text for an internet gag so I'm so happy I found Paul.

Notes on the translation from the translator:

I used the ventive suffix on the imperative "give (rib+am)" which is a special feature of Akkadian that indicates the motion of direction. It makes it a little bit more authentic. The longer version actually includes the words "to me (ana iasim)", but a typical Akkadian speaker probably wouldn't have needed to say that.

Also, for the word "money" I used the Sumerian (KUG.BABBAR) instead of spelling out the Akkadian, because that was a common feature in Akkadian scribal writing. For the font I was happily surprised that Google has a Cuniform font, so not only is it correct but it looks pretty neat too. Right now you can buy both versions in the shop but cuniform version won't ship for a week or so as I have to order new stock with the new design.
