Okay so The Music Hole is my favorite episode of Adventure Time, and it's breaking my heart seeing it under 15%. I'm fine with I Remember You winning, and this is not to deny that episode's many strengths, but it should be much closer than this

The Music Hole represents a new chapter in Finn's life and explores complex messages about mental health and how it's impacted by the community one surrounds themselves with.

The first aspect of The Music Hole that I always find to be poignant is the narrative of mourning one's past self, which is a common experience for those with mental illnesses such as depression and PTSD. On a textual level, Finn is mourning the loss of the Finn sword, an alternate version of himself. It was demonstrated in Crossover, and would be explored further in the Fern arc, that Finn is able to express compassion for himself most easily through his compassion and understanding towards these alternative versions of him.

In killing Finn sword, he's killed a version of himself, and now he has to cope with a type of loss that no one around him seems to understand

But it's more than that, even. On a subtextual level I believe we can understand the mourning that Finn is experiencing here to be a mourning of his own past self. Over the year or so that's passed between Is That You? and The Music Hole, Finn has undergone a range of difficult and traumatic experiences, including the rejection of his biological father. He is fundamentally not the same person he was when the Finn Sword version of him was "formed". And I believe that his struggle in this episode is meant to represent the process of allowing oneself to grieve the loss of who you used to be.

Furthermore, The Music Hole is about the importance of community and solidarity when confronting complex traumas and mental health. Finn goes through a big emotional crisis in The Tower, and there we see Jake and Princess Bubblegum scrambling for a way to help him. In The Music Hole, they have plans in place to help him, and that desire to lift him up brings an entire community together in support of a person they care about. This doesn't erase the pain he's going through, but he's being shown he's loved, even if his support group might not understand the specifics of what he's going through internally right now.

Which is where The Music Hole itself comes in. While the support of Finn's friends and community is important, he finds a particular solace in the quiet solidarity The Music Hole offers him. He hears her song, and he hears hers, and in understanding each other, they reach a new understanding of themselves. And I just think that's pretty great.

my nostalgia for circa 2010 club music is hysterical to me. i was not at “the club” in two thousand and ten, i was at home on the family computer singing along to “like a G6” as if i wasn’t in the G6th fucking grade

the new immigration law that was just voted in france... every single one of the 349 deputies who voted yes is a disgusting racist far-right pig (and same for the senators) - it wasn't enough to let a palestinian man die because you only wanted some of his kids to come to France despite him working for France for years as though there should be a quota now you've decided to actually impose a quota on immigration, distribute social benefits based on origins thereby implementing a national preference on social services, take away the long standing right of any kid born in france from foreign parents to be automatically french, ask a deposit from foreign students that would only be given back on the basis of them leaving the country once they've finished their studies, allow residential permits based on job sectors with lack of workforce and so many more stuffs and all of that under the cheers of the far right party the current government was supposed to oppose... this country is making me sick!!!

The Enigma of Amigara Fault

This short story by Junji Ito is about a fault that appears in Amigara mountain after an earthquake. The earthquake exposes countless human-shaped holes in the mountain which seem to have been made about a thousand years ago. People, intrigued by these  silhouettes, gather at the site and that’s when things get creepy.

It’s about a 15-20 min read, but if you haven’t read this before, you’re in for a treat. Link above.
