if you came for decent content, you're in the wrong spot! (pan, she/her) (art blog: paige0art)

Apparently the first hurricane since 1939 is expected to make landfall in California this weekend. It’s expected that an entire year’s worth of rain will fall in 24-48hrs. Don’t you love climate change?

It’s expected that the hurricane will weaken to a tropical storm before making landfall in Southern California.

Still, as someone who lives in LA, this is deeply concerning. Anyone who lives in Los Angeles knows that the city is DEEPLY unprepared to handle any amount of rain, let alone a TROPICAL STORM. The tiniest amounts of rainfall cause floods in LA, because the city has no drainage systems in place. I’ve seen DRIZZLES cause floods. It takes so little rain to flood LA.

If a tropical storm truly does make landfall in LA, it will have a devastating effect on the city’s very large unhoused population. LA (along with NYC) has the biggest unhoused population in the United States, and these people will be stuck on the flooded streets.

Deeply concerning.

Coincidentally, in November 2022, researchers at UC Irvine conducted a study on how a major flood would impact Los Angeles.

From ABC news (s):
“In a state severely hobbled by drought and wildfires, flood concerns may not seem top-of-mind. But a new study out of UC Irvine found that Los Angeles County's aging flood systems may not be ready for a major flood.
"Right now, our research suggests that our infrastructure and the way we've built it out is much more vulnerable to this type of event than I think anyone would have guessed," said Brett Sanders, a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCI and one of the authors of the paper.
The study expands on federal flood risk maps that do not include flooding from rainstorms, only coastal and river flooding, according to Sanders.
“For any Angeleno that drives around [in a] Southern California rainstorm, you know that you quickly find yourself in a street corner filled with water. And those risks aren't mapped," said Sanders.
"So you can imagine the small amount of flooding we have in our streets on a typical winter storm. What might that look like in a once-in-100-year-storm?" he continued.
According to the study's mid-range estimates, 425,000 people could be exposed to flooding of more than a foot, causing $56 billion in property damage in the event of a major flood.
But, those are the researchers' "best guess," said Sanders. The study accounted for uncertainties in how much water would flow through the area in a once-in-a-century flood.
The study's low estimates put 197,000 Angelenos at risk of experiencing flood levels of more than about a foot and property damage at about $36 billion. On the high end, a major flood could impact 874,000 people and cause $108 billion in property damage.
The study also found that communities of color would be more likely to experience waist-high flooding.
Black, Latino and Asian Angelenos would be 79%, 17%, and 11% more likely, respectively, to experience deep flooding than white Angelenos.”

I seriously hope that the storm weakens before it makes landfall. I hope this concern becomes completely unnecessary and that it’s nothing more than a little drizzle.

For the latest updates:

As of 6:35am PDT: "HILARY REMAINS A LARGE AND POWERFUL CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE... ...SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IMPACTS POSSIBLE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA AND THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES."

"Heavy rainfall in association with Hilary is expected to impact the Southwestern United States through next Wednesday, peaking on Sunday and Monday. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, are expected across portions of southern California and southern Nevada, which would lead to significant and rare impacts. Elsewhere across portions of the Western United States, rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected."

(Public Advisory 8A; next advisory will be at 8am PDT)

Ok I love this???

"baptise me in hot dog water"

Hot dog water - there's a Tumblr post out there I've seen saying hot dog water is the opposite of holy water, due to the fact that a single drop of it will contaminate what it touches. I assume this was partly inspired by this allusion but who knows for sure.

Also the the idea of holy water as inhuman and cleaning vs hot dog water as the remains of feeding someone - often a child - and entirely human. It may be dirty and I do not want it on me but God hot dog water has some memories. You will not wash away my sins. They're mine. Also, anyone can make hot dog water but holy water is refined, restricted (yes anyone can make it in an emergency but lay people are restricted from it)

"you and I both know"

Unlike baptism for babies, this one is done between two people who are both aware of what is happening. The one receiving the baptism gives the orders about what they want to happen. The giver and receiver are portrayed as equals. They are equally aware of their humanity.

"the holy stuff won't take"

Ooof heartbreaking, amazing line. Raises so many questions. What does it mean when the water "takes"? What has the receiver done that makes them unfit for holy water? Or, what has the holy water done that makes it to weak to help, to be a part of your life?

The poem as a whole - I love the lack of capitalization. It adds a sort of intimacy to the poem, and the statement from the speaker. The high words "baptise" and "holy" being offset by "take" and "hot dog". Also "hot dog water" vs "holy stuff." The cadence! I would lick it.

I love the serious analysis, and I think I find it persuasive.

This also sheds a lot of light on some plot points in Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated.

Not to turn this into another house full of chintz, but I'mma fuck this poem on the floor.

Meter

There are two readings of the poem's meter that I immediately identify, the first is how I'd want to read it, and the second is how a normal person would probably read it, but both make the same point.

In my interpretation (left), the first line is four wholely irregular feet: an iamb into a dibrach into two trochees; The second line is two trouches into a hanging stressed syllable; And the third line is three iambs.

In the more normal interpretation(right), the first line and second line are six trochees all together plus that hanging syllable in 'knowing' which transitions the poem to iambic trimeter.

And look at the interesting result of that laid bare:

Image

In English poetry there's a tradition, all other things being equal, that iambs are considered the sophisticated foot with trochees often being contrasted as the vulgar or common foot.

The vulgar in specificity "hot dog water" is put in trochee, while the respectably vague "the holy stuff" is afforded iambs. Without the poet having thought of the stress things the pattern actively, this incapulation of the English poetic tradition is astounding. Especially when you consider the

Chiasmus

Chiasmus is a figure of rhetorical construction, in which two pairs of ideas are laid across each other, A B B A. It's one of the more popular figures of rhetoric and if you're looking for it you'll see it everywhere.

In the most literal sense, it's about repetition; but, you can apply it more liberally to ideas, thoughts, or in this case, parts of speech:

The nouns and verb pairs in the first and third lines crossover each other. They are in chiasmus. Structurally, the inversion makes the poem feel more solid, while still furthering emphasizing the contrast between the idea of hot dog water and the holy stuff.

Opening with a command and closing with a result.

in my defense. that's for another post that's in my queue. however. i live alone. and i saw Only your tags first without the photo

What able bodied authors think I, an amputee and a wheelchair user, would want in a scifi setting:

  • Tech that can regenerate my old meat legs.
  • Robot legs that work just like meat legs and are functionally just meat legs but robot
  • Literally anything that would mean I don't have to use a wheelchair.
  • If I do need to use a wheelchair, make it fly or able to "walk me" upstairs

What I actually want:

  • Prosthetic covers that can change colour because I'm too indecisive to pick one colour/pattern for the next 5+ years.
  • A leg that I can turn off (seriously, my above knee prosthetic has no off switch... just... why?)
  • A leg that won't have to get refitted every time I gain or loose weight.
  • A wheelchair that I can teleport to me and legs I can teleport away when I'm too tierd to keep walking. And vice versa.
  • In that same vein, legs I can teleport on instead of having to fiddle around with the sockets for half an hour.
  • Prosthetic feet that don't require me to wear shoes. F*ck shoes.
  • Actually accessible architecture, which means when I do want to use my wheelchair, it's not an issue.
  • Prosthetic legs with dragon-claw feet instead of boring human feet or just digigrade prosthetics that are just as functional as normal human-shaped ones.
  • A manual wheelchair with the option to lift my seat up like those scissor-lift things so I'm not eye-level with everyone's butt on public transport/so I can reach the top shelf by myself.
  • A prosthetic foot that lights up when it hits the ground like those children's shoes.

Ambulatory wheelchair user + chronic pain additions:

  • Temperature controlled seat
  • Android that brings my chair to me and is such a bro
  • Hovers smoothly over bumpy road and stairs and makes a woooowooooowoooo sound when it does
  • Chair wheels that light up when spun and charge my chair so it can be driven via joystick after a while of manual use
  • Alerts on my phone if the chair is being moved without my knowledge
  • Integrated GPS and the ability to dial emergency numbers
  • And autopilot to take me home if I get tipsy <3
