BDJ & Shoestring Present: HallowZINE Comix & Print Fair!

Saturday, October 29, 2016. 12-7pm. @ Shoestring Studio, 640 Classon Avenue (between Bergen and Dean) Many vendors! Zines! Comix! Prints! Live drawing! Tricks! Treats! Candy! Beer and BBQ in the backyard! All are welcome! Come in costume if you wanna!

Exhibitors TBA

Crown Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods of Brooklyn have a huge, vibrant comics and illustration community, but it often feels fractured. The Brooklyn Draw Jam has been a great way of bringing folks together, but we feel like we can do more. Shoestring just opened a new space with a focus on drawing and painting-based work, so we’ve decided to partner with them to host this small festival, in addition to Shoestring’s slate of art classes and BDJ’s monthly meet-up.

Pretty proud that we’re doing this, guys. Hope you all can make it out!

I don’t have guidelines for respectful appropriation. I just try and see the world as is and not as commodity.

I followed the early adventures of Gratuitous Ninja in Pratt’s student comic book, the Static Fish. In those pages, Ron’s wordless, Aeon Flux-ish karate adventures always stood out as head and shoulders and TORSO above the competition. Made me want to get better. Glad to see them live on.

Thanks for the Sweet Reviewmons, Cloughsin!

Rob Clough (High-Low Comics, the Comics Journal) has plenty to say about Sour Persimmons and @benhorak‘s latest Grump Toast.

Buy it now from @birdcagebottombooks, you nincompoop.

Ben Horak and Pat Barrett, two masters of nasty satire, ... lay on the visceral gristle in a story about a blobby angel (a go-to special for Barrett) who isn't very good at his job: instilling a sense of unity in a humanity that absolutely hates itself... A sitcom-derived scene (complete with laugh track and background "awwws") demonstrates how sometimes following your dream perhaps isn't the best idea. The lurid pinks and purples are almost nauseating on the page, and that's the whole idea.

Final week of The Dailies.

I received my letter from the Ministry of Comics by courier today (see attached image). It reads as follows:

Dear Mr. McFadzean: This letter is to confirm that you have completed the required minimum of six (6) years of daily comic strips, as outlined by the Government of Canada’s Cartooning Standards Act of 1967. According to our records, your final strip count is 2,192 (365 in black and white, 1,827 in colour). Now that your obligations have been fulfilled, you are no longer required by law to produce daily comic strips. However, the Ministry strongly encourages citizens to maintain some form of structured cartooning practice such as drawing a single daily panel, daily inking exercises and/or daily paper cutouts. Please complete the attached paperwork and submit it to Library and Archives Canada within sixty (60) days. Further, do not forget to report all cartooning income to the Canada Revenue Agency by 30 April 2016. Regards, Y. Mailloux Ministry Program Officer Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N4 — Sincere thanks for reading The Dailies. More comics are on the way. http://dakotamcfadzean.com/comic/the-dailies-2185/
