Why Your Spells Don’t Work

You set your intention. You had all the correct correspondences. You even timed your spell with the appropriate moon phase. And yet – no results. What gives?

Failed spells happen to the best of us, and for a variety of reasons. But a spell gone wrong doesn’t necessarily mean that magic isn’t real or that you’re bad at witchcraft. Magic is complicated, and there are a lot of reasons it might not behave the way you want it to. Here are some of the most common causes of ineffective spells:

1. Lack of real-world follow through

Magic is meant to be used as a tool to supplement your mundane efforts – not as a substitute for them. How can you expect your job hunting spell to bring in results if you aren’t applying for jobs?

Magic does not exist in a vacuum, and it can’t make something out of nothing. If a spell doesn’t bring you the desired result, make sure that your non-magical actions are aligned with what you are trying to manifest.

2. What you’re trying to manifest isn’t a realistic possibility

Wait, what? Isn’t magic supposed to be, well… magic? Shouldn’t you be able to ask for whatever you want and get it? Yes and no.

Magic is simply a way of directing energy. Magic can’t defy the natural laws of the universe. It can’t make something happen unless it was already a potential possibility.

If your intention is unrealistic for where you are right now, try splitting it up into a multi-step process. No spell is going to make you a billionaire overnight, but magic could help you get hired at a better paying job… and then get promoted… and then get offered a profitable side gig… etc. Starting small and working your way up is always going to produce stronger results, because you laid the foundation first.

3. Your intention was either too vague or too specific

Whether you use written petitions or spoken incantations, clearly stating your intention is an important part (maybe THE most important part) of any spell or ritual. A good intention is specific enough to get you the results you want, but open enough to let those results manifest naturally.

Let’s say you do a money spell, and your intention for the spell is simply, “I have more money.” If you find a penny on the ground the next day and pick it up, technically that is more money than you had before. A better alternative would be to use an intention like, “I have enough money to buy ___,” or “I have enough money for everything I need and want.”

Using an intention that is too specific creates the opposite problem. Let’s say you want to manifest a scholarship to a specific school. You do a candle spell with the intention, “I have been chosen for the John Smith Scholarship at Jane Doe University.” But maybe the John Smith scholarship had already been awarded by the time you did your spell. Maybe there’s another scholarship at the same school that would be a better fit for you, or maybe you’re eligible for a grant that would make tuition more affordable. A better intention for your spell would be “I have enough financial aid to easily and affordably attend Jane Doe University.”

Magic always follows the path of least resistance, so you want to make sure that your intention is specific enough to give your magic a clear direction, but open enough to allow it some flexibility.

4. Lack of focus/concentration

We all know the struggle. You’ve been planning this ritual forever, and it’s finally the full moon, but you’ve got a really full schedule today. If you hurry, you can probably squeeze it into the thirty minute window between school and work, right?

If you say a few quick words and burn some incense before you head out the door in the morning, that totally counts as a spell, right?

Not so much. Rushed, lazy, and/or half-assed spells rarely, if ever, work. Spells revolve around the raising and direction of energy, and that requires two things: a clear intention (see above) and intense focus on that intention. If you don’t have the time/energy/mental capacity to focus, it’s best to take a break, have a self care day, and come back to your spell some other time.

5. You’re subconsciously blocking your own results OR you did a spell for someone else who isn’t open to it

I decided to lump these two together, because they’re different variations of the same issue.

Whenever you are doing magic on yourself, it’s important that your mindset is aligned with your intentions. You can do love spells all day long, but if deep down you don’t believe that you’re worthy of love, that belief is going to block your spells from working. This is why mindfulness, psychology, and self care are all such important parts of a successful witchcraft practice. It’s also why I recommend doing the mental work before you sit down to ritual.

If you did a spell on yourself, or are trying to manifest something for yourself, and it just isn’t working, I highly recommend setting some time aside for journaling and meditation and asking yourself 1.) if this is really what you want, and 2.) if you truly believe that you can have it.

The whole mindset thing gets even more tricky when you’re doing magic on behalf of another person, because their energy is also at work in the situation and could be at odds with yours. For example, if you do a spell to help a friend land a job, but that friend believes that they’re totally underqualified and could never get it, they probably won’t get the job even if you did everything “right” in your spell.

This should go without saying, but it is extremely unethical to use magic to mess around in someone else’s head. Even if you think you know what’s best for them, they need to be open to it. If someone is blocking the spells you do on their behalf, all you can do is try to be supportive and find other ways to help them out.

Other (Rare) Reasons for Failed Spells

If a spell goes wrong, it will almost always be for one of the above reasons. But maybe you did everything “right” – you did the mental work first, had a strong, realistic intention, put lots of focus into your spell, and followed through in real life – and you still aren’t seeing results. There are a couple of other things that could be blocking your spells, but they’re very uncommon so I’m not going to talk about them in as much detail. These may be things you want to look into if you really, genuinely can’t think of any other cause.

  • It’s possible that another witch has done magic that cancels out or blocks yours. This is not common, and it does NOT mean that someone has cursed you. It could be as simple as two witches unknowingly casting spells with opposite intentions, which end up cancelling each other out. (For example, maybe two different people both cast a spell to get the same job. Obviously, they can’t both get that job.) This is why it’s never a bad idea to incorporate a protective element into your spells to block outside interference.
  • There is a very, very remote possibility that someone has placed a curse on you specifically to block your magic. However – and I cannot stress this enough – this is VERY uncommon. If you were cursed you would know it, or at least know that something was very wrong in your life. If you feel like you have been cursed or hexed, I recommend looking into uncrossing spells, which are specifically designed to undo negative magic.
  • It’s also possible that a higher power is intervening. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a deity, although it certainly could be. Most witches believe in some form of fate or destiny, and it’s possible that your spell didn’t work because what you asked for is not in alignment with your destiny. In these situations, really the only thing you can do is surrender to the bigger picture.

Energy Healing Protocols

Much like how treatment for physical injuries have certain procedures, energetic healing also has certain protocols for safe, effective healing. I have previously covered methods of energy healing, but this time I’ll talk about what I do before  healings. Please keep in mind that there are certain steps that I either omit, or ask before I do healings, to make sure I have consent from the other person. I might also switch up steps depending on situation. Keep in mind that this is what I like to do personally am sharing in case people would find it useful. This post is specifically for before healing but I may do one for after. Also feel free to comment with any questions or supplemental things that you do in your practice.

Before Healing

This may seem like a lot, but in actuality it doesn’t take too long, maybe 10-15 min depending on the person.

  1. I will tell the receiver what my process is: the Before Healing, the During Healing, the After Healing. Depending on who it is, I will spare most people the minor details that don’t infringe on their privacy or have nothing to do with them.
  2. If I am doing healing on physical or emotional related things, I will let the person know that energy healing can only do so much and to seek professional help if needed.
  3. I will ask if the receiver has certain boundaries or if they want me to avoid using certain types of energies.
  4. I will ask the receiver to let their companions/guides/spouses/deities know that I will be working on their energy system and that I come in peace. I might also ask the receiver to meditate as they wait a little while I make preparations.
  5. I will meditate and cleanse, not only just cleansing my energy system but also the space around me.
  6. This is so I don’t bring harmful entities, negative energy, or parasites to the person I am treating. Imagine how frustrating it would be if you’re feeling terrible and the person who is supposed to heal you gives you parasites lol. That being said, I know that this post is directed towards healers but for those who are receiving healing, you deserve to ask for the healer to cleanse beforehand. I might make a separate post for receivers of energy work later.
  7. I will check my wards or refresh them, making sure that I again don’t get parasites attached to me in between then and starting the healing, and so I protect myself if the receiver has parasites.
  8. If the receiver is not in the same space as me (distance healing), then I will either ask if they can cleanse their space or if it is okay for me to cleanse their space for them.
  9. If needed, and without interfering with any possible wards the receiver has, I will also ask if it is okay for me to ward around us so that nothing will disturb the healing session.
  10. Based on what I am healing, I will let the receiver know possible uncomfortable things that might happen, i.e. Flashbacks or feelings of events from the past, sudden emotions that may be being repressed, oftentimes I might feel something that is very personal to the receiver, etc.
  11. It hasn’t happened where the receiver has expressed dislike for it, as for my experiences all the receivers have rather felt it validated their experiences. However, it can be an intrusion of their privacy and you should let them know so they can set boundaries if they wish to.
  12. Not A Step But Important: Speaking of boundaries, if the receiver asks you to only look at one specific thing, do not look into anything else unless it is related to that thing and unless you ask or already have permission.
  13. After all the cleansing, warding, and warning are done, I will ask the receiver if they are ready, and to check with their spirit fam again if they forgot to do so.
  14. I will tell them that if any point that if they want me to stop, to message me and I will stop. This is super important since energy work can be very intimate and personal to people, and that boundaries can change at any point, to which we must adhere to and respect.
  15. Once they give their “okay” to start, I let them know that I am starting.

Overall: CleANsE pls dear lord, you wouldn’t touch someone’s open wound with dirty hands (actually don’t touch their open wounds in general lol) so don’t treat someone if you have negative energy/parasites. Cleanse, protect, and be mindful of the receiver, give them information for them to be able to establish boundaries beforehand. If you feel like their boundaries will deter you from doing your healing, talk to them about it but always make sure they are 100% willing and comfortable. Again, these steps are often switched around depending on who I’m healing and what the situation is, but the main points are always there. Keep things clean, safe, and respectful, for both yourself and the person you are healing. *whispers* cleanse protect respect, cleanse protect respect, cleanseprotectrespect

Thanks for reading, and again feel free to share thoughts/opinions/questions. c:

Water Scrying

Water scrying is the art and practice of gazing into water to see the future or receive a vision. Water scrying is a great way for clairvoyants to develop their skills, but can also be done by anyone. -Mod J

  1. To start, you are going to need a bowl or something that holds water. Preferably the bowl or water holding object should be a solid color inside so you don’t get distracted by patterns. Black, white, or a metal bowl are ideal because these are colors that are easy to gaze at for extended periods but any solid color should work.
  2. Fill the bowl with water
  3. Now set up your space. It helps to turn off the lights and have a candle or a few around the bowl giving some light but not close enough that you see the reflection in the water.
  4. Now this is the hardest part, gaze into the water in the bowl and let your eye lose focus. Your vision might get a little blurry but try to fight the urge to look around and refocus your vision. After a while of doing this you might be able to correct the blurriness without losing focus on the water. Around this point when your gaze softens some kind of vision should appear in the water. It’s important to understand that what you see might be a real depiction of what your scrying for/about but it’s more common for you see symbolic images instead. Learning to translate these symbols takes some time and practice so keep working at it. Another thing to note is that you might feel like your mind is just making you see things in the water that isn’t there, and i guess on some level that is correct. The water it’s self isn’t what’s producing the vision, you are receiving because you asked to, and are using the water and bowl as tools to help perceive it.

Here are ways to help enhance your water scrying that i know of:

  • You can charge your bowl over night with tea made from certain herbs. I like to steep some mugwort and lavender in my bowl to charge it while i sleep and empty it in the morning.
  • You can a few drops of essential oils to your bowl while scrying, or before to help charge the bowl and water’s energy. The oily surface can also help keep you from getting distracted and gives your eyes something to focus on.
  • Another way to prevent distraction is to put a small crystal at the bottom of the bowl around the center. It gives you a fixed point to look at, but I’ve noticed for me that is often cut off some of the vision and everything will move around the crystal rather then appearing in the whole bowl.
  • Using your bowl for offerings. I find this helps charge and enhance my scrying bowl’s energy by putting offering in it when i work with other spirits and deities.
  • Sometimes it can also help to instead of building up the energy in the bowl do a cleansing and put some salt water in the bowl to soak.
  • You can also use moon water, sun water, or any magically enhanced water that might be specific to the type of reading you are doing. I find moon water is always good for all water scrying.

If you try water scrying and find it doesn’t work for you that’s alright. It’s not for everyone, and even those who do it regularly have off days where they can’t get anything to come through. So give it a few tries before you decide if it’s something for you. Good luck with your scrying! -Mod J

Everyday Magickal Actions

Some people (like me) don’t have the time, resources and/or energy to perform complex spells or rituals every day. Some common causes of this are:

  • Depression
  • Busy life
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic illness/pain
  • Disability
  • Financial insecurity

All of these are very common problems in the witch community, and it’s perfectly fine not to have a huge collection of crystals or sacrifices for the gods! There are many simple, low-energy ways to perform witchcraft that are no lesser than the above practices. Here are some ways to practice the craft this way:

  • Stirring a drink counter-clockwise banishes negative energy
  • Stirring clockwise embues energy of your choosing (just focus on it while you stir!)
  • Saying hello to plants/animals in the wild will increase your connection with nature
  • So does cleaning up litter on the side of the road.
  • Tap gently on the palm of your hand with your index finger helps with anxiety and concentration, and is a good way to stim without drawing attention, for those of you who do so
  • Put bugs gently outside instead of squishing them. They are smol beings, protect them.
  • Set a small portion of your food aside for any god/deity/faeries/spirit to eat (or just as an offering to the universe).
  • Throw a sprinkle of moon water (water that’s been left out under moonlight) on a plant to help it grow!
  • Sigils are literally a life saver. Make some!

And sometimes, just sitting and feeling the energy of the universe around you is a magick unto itself. So don’t be hard on yourself! You are magick, and magick is you; you don’t have to prove yourself to the universe: it’s already chosen you!

Oh, and say hello to the cherry blossoms, they will hold something special for you in return.

Nyx

Nyx is the Greek goddess (or personification) of the night. A shadowy figure, Nyx stood at or near the beginning of creation and mothered other personified deities such as Hypnos and Thanatos, with Erebus. Her appearances are sparse in surviving mythology, but reveal her as a figure of such exceptional power and beauty that she is feared by Zeus himself.

Bath ritual for peace, love & purification 💗

Ingredients: lavender, chamomile, himalayan salt, sea salt & moon water blessed under the super full moon that just passed 🌕✨

4 white candles & sage incense burn while I am accompanied by some of my rose quartz, clear quartz, and angelite babies. I repeated a positive chant over and over as I visualized the water purifying me, and infusing me with love and peaceful energy.

Simple and sweet 💗
