I think society can and does have an impact on us but we are pretty well defined as people by the time we’re 5 years old. We should use the good sense that God gave us to shield ourselves from all things negative and detrimental to our well being but society has a way of impeding the process. Evil lurks in the hearts and minds of men. How much of that is societies fault is a good question.A better question would be; Do we act the way we do because of society or in spite of it? I’m sure there are valid arguments for both points of view. What defines us isn’t what we’ve learned from our parents and our teachers but how we put that information to use. So then the question becomes; can society change the way you act? Yes it can, if mass murder and terrorism are evidence of how society can affect ones behavior then yes this must be true. In what ways? Every way imaginable would be accurate but still vague. Mind control/conditioning is real, look what Hitler got away with. This is an extreme case but isn’t it true that Hitler constantly bombarded his society with sugar coated lies called propagnda? Didn’t they also accept what he was saying and convince each other that he was doing what was best for Germany? In hindsight they all look like fools but the reality is they were reprogrammed and made to believe that the war was justified and in their best interest. Why is there terrorism? Is it religion?Culture?Revolt? Oppression? or good old starvation? The problem is there are societies within societies and it seems that the inner ones are the ones causing the problems for everyone else. Beyond all of this there lies the non-conformist. There are people smart enough and with enough guts to live their lives by their own moral code and not get sucked into political or socio-economic debates. Society may be to blame here again if it is a fact that these people don’t act a certain way because of society the root influence is still society.

Everything has consequences. Society can help us or hurt us depending on how much evil we are willing to tolerate. Maybe the prayer should have read; lead us not into society instead of evil, either way the decision to go with the crowd or become a recluse is ours alone.
