Updates on Our Daily Bird:

After a lot of thought about this blog and my work in general, I've decided to change the frequency of my posts to once or twice a week.

I started this blog as a way to stay sharp and encourage myself to consistently produce work. That's been fairly successful, but now my focus is shifting and I don't want to be tied to the "daily" aspect if it's just encouraging me to post half-thought out work to keep an arbitrary streak going. Part of me is burnt out, and part of me just wants to devote more time to each post.

Birds are a joy to me-- they deserve so much more than a rushed drawing of a species in profile. And since I am an animator, I want to bring that skill to the blog more often as well.

I'm glad that so many people are enjoying these posts and I hope that continues as well.

TL;DR: Slightly less frequent posts, slightly more thoughtful ideas, designs, and animation!

This is an accurate representation of what’s going on inside my computer right now. I’m restoring and sorting through thousands of older files this week, and it will probably take me longer than expected. So I’ll be taking some time off to try and get things in order, and also to consider some new posts for Our Daily Bird that go beyond “here is a drawing of a bird in profile.” So wish me luck and I’ll be back really soon!

Today, we take a look at the thought process behind Our Daily Bird...

There are lots of swan species! Their long, graceful shapes have inspired people to create signs and logos that feature both the bird and the word.

We are continuing Superb Owl Weekend with the Barred Owl, a large owl found mostly in the eastern part of North America. Its call sounds like “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?”

As we head into Superb Owl Weekend, we’ll kick off with the Burrowing Owl. These owls live in old prairie dog dens, but will excavate their own in some areas. They tend to look like they’re on high alert but also super angry. 

Happy Wrensday with a Fiddling Wren! He hops as he plays!

The next imaginary bird is the Krimpet Katcher. It is flightless and has strong legs for running after any Krimpets tossed its way. It prefers butterscotch to jelly krimpets.

A simple chicken because I need something simple in my life.

A heron that is blue happened to pop out of my scribbles today.

Wren wants to know what’s up.

A portrait of a Budgie!  I haven’t owned a bird in a long time, but I still miss the budgies that were my friends for so many years. 

The Five-Striped Sparrow got its name from the 5 white stripes on its face. It can be found in Mexico and some parts of the southwestern US.
