Let's Thank the AO3 Staff

The DDoS attack has me, once again, realizing how much fandom owes to the volunteers at OTW. They truly have provided a safe haven for fanworks, and have allowed our communities to flourish without censorship or judgement in a way that is incredibly important and so, so rare.

Anyway, I sincerely doubt this is going to get enough attention to go anywhere, but I wanted to at least send the vibes out: collaborative thank you note to ao3 staff

Because the staff at A03 is doing something incredible, and they're doing it for free, and sometimes it's nice to tell people you appreciate them.

(Desktop works better than mobile for signing the card)

P.S. I am not a graphic designer, or a particularly technologically skilled person. If this does somehow manage to gain traction, I welcome any graphic designers to improve the card, or people with brains to improve the management of it.

P.P.S. Tumblr gods, if you're listening, please let more then 2 people see this before it gets buried.

🚨⚠️ATTENTION FELLOW WRITERS⚠️🚨

If you use Google Docs for your writing, I highly encourage you to download your work, delete it from Google Docs, and transfer it to a different program/site, unless you want AI to start leeching off your hard work!!!

I personally have switched to Libre Office, but there are many different options. I recommend checking out r/degoogle for options.

Please reblog to spread the word!!

Crypt Pad can be an option too!

I don’t use Docs very much at all, but this looks like a good moment to take a sweep through my account and delete anything that’s in there.

Jesus Christ not this again.

First, note how many times this person says “I take this to mean...” I support people reading the terms and conditions but when you’re this wildly off base about what it means you’re not helping anyone.

First, here’s the actual Terms and Conditions.

Second, the feature that Google Workplace Labs is referring to is basically an advanced search engine. It is a feature you can use to ask questions (the prompt) and receive answers (the output). How do I know this? Because the data it refers to is specified: your prompts and input, prompt and input refinements, generated output, generated output refinements, and feedback. You have to specifically give the Lab information - it is not grabbing the info from anywhere else.

It is up to YOU to not input information you don’t want Google to retain. It works exactly like a Google search - which for the record Google keeps records of and what result you ended up going with. If you don’t want Google to have access to your omegaverse fic then don’t input it into the big box that is set aside specifically to give it to Google.

Third, I mentioned this in a previous post but I am the human reviewer mentioned in “To help with quality and improve our products, human reviewers read, annotate, and process your Workspace Labs data.” We’re not supposed to guess what AI we’re working with but I’d bet every dollar I have that the one I review for rhymes with ‘Lard’.

Here’s what we get:

Prompt: What is a good way to start a story?
Response: I can help with that!  Stories work best with a strong start. You should introduce a major component of your story such as the setting, a main character, or a plot hook. Which you choose will depend on your genre. A mystery, for example, may start with the discovery of a body while a romance may introduce one of the main characters.
Feedback: Dissatisfied, I wanted it to give me first lines.

Now I have the info. I can see what you asked (although I have no idea it was you), the response the AI gave you, and why you didn’t like it. I rewrite a new response taking your feedback into account. That response is submitted to the AI so it can learn what it did wrong. If you don’t give feedback I may only get the first two and then I decide if it was a good answer and either accept it or rewrite based on my understanding.

Fourth, I already wrote a whole screed on this so I’m not going to repeat it but take twelve seconds to think of the implications of a company using all of your data. Google has a vested and immediate interest in being able to use your data. No one denies it. But it doesn’t because they cannot pivot their business model to taking all of a person’s data. It will ALWAYS have to be opt in. Too many major players have secrets stored in shit like Google docs (the number of federal agencies and law firms alone would make you wince).

Fifth, this is not to say a BRAND NEW platform might not try to pull some shit. TikTok famously. But Google and Microsoft have a business model based around storing secrets. They are not going to jettison that.

A good article about all this, I get that it’s a valid concern rn but the fact is that there’s absolutely no way if Google did this that they wouldn’t get sued into oblivion. The amount of private and proprietary information stored would simply be grounds for every single company that uses drive to well. Do what companies do.

I will say that I think having a backup is good, and will be looking for one myself. But please please please do research when it comes to stuff like this. Everyone is vulnerable to misinfo. I’ve done it before, so rule of thumb: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. If it’s too evil to be true, it might be. Always double check.

Also please don’t spread misinformation like this! I’ve heard many a people have panic attacks over having to transfer thousands of documents, and spreading misinformation can cause more anxiety for people and more harm to Google.

Do research and check to make sure before jumping to conclusions!

They were literally already investigated for this and they're supposed to be fixing it but its just gotten worse so I wonder what the recourse here is?

Hey remember when they found over 200 bodies of native children buried behind a residential school and the world cared for... what, a week?

They've counted about 6,000-7,000 now, for those of you who do still care

It should NOT fall on Indigenous people's shoulders to keep this known still. We’ve been doing that for generations at this point and NO ONE wants to listen to us.

We’re tired, mourning and constantly reopening our trauma and pain to keep people caring about us. It’s terrible.

I should start by noting that I am white, and not Canadian, and that if op wants me to remove this comment for any reason, please let me know.

This is a map of all the residential schools in Canada:

Each dot on this map represents a residential school. Blue dots mean the school is considered completely searched. Yellow dots mean they are either in the process of being searched or there are plans to be searched. Red dots indicate that no search has happened and that no search is currently planned

There were more than 130 residential schools in Canada. This map suggests that only six have been fully searched, and a little more than a dozen partially searched (I counted 15 yellow dots). That leaves at least 109 schools completely untouched.

Let that sink in; if 6,000-7,000 unmarked, indigenous children’s graves were found by searching less than a fifth of all the schools, how many are still undiscovered.

Wikipedia estimates that the body count could be over 50,000, and honestly, that could be a low estimate

[ID: A map of Canada with dozens of dots on it, 6 of which are blue and 7 of which are yellow; the rest are red. Later there is a screenshot from wikipedia reading, “Estimates range from 3,200 to over 50,000 children that were killed. Most of the recorded student deaths at residential schools took place before the 1950s. /end ID]

The residential school system was a calculated, open, and forthrightly declared attempt at the total genocide of all indigenous peoples in this country. It was literally meant to wipe them out entirely, through a combination of attrition and assimilation.

Never forget that this is what Canada is really built upon.

These are the residential schools in the U.S. I've mapped out the ones in California and there are articles about burials on these sites, some marked and some not.

I hope Secretary Haaland's Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative investigates every single one; their report is Due on April 1, 2022,

Which of these would you rather see on your dash?

Hey @staff. This is a perfect example of why collapsed reblogs is such a bad idea. Seeing the full thread, you go like this: 😮 ooh, that's cool 😀 "they're free," hehe! 🤣 "16 cents," perfection!!

I have achieved joy, I feel positive feelings toward Tumblr, I want to engage, I want to stay, my eyeballs land on more ads, you make more money, everyone wins! 🎉

Seeing the collapsed thread, you go like this:

😮 ooh, that's cool 😐 "16 cents"? yes, that's literally what the pic shows, not sure why you felt the need to say that

There is no motivation for me to uncollapse the reblog chain—it looks like a boring conversation about the denominations of coins. And even if I do uncollapse it, you've ruined the joke by showing me the punchline before the setup. I am sad, Tumblr is boring, I go elsewhere to entertain myself, I see less ads, you make less money, everyone loses. 😥

Reblog chains are the best thing about Tumblr. They are your unique super power. They are the thing that makes people screenshot Tumblr and share it around. Why on earth would you kneecap them??

I don't know exactly how you plan to implement this. Give people the option to keep them collapsed if there truly are people who are annoyed by how long they can get (you already have a version of this feature), but don't collapse them for everyone or new users by default. Please. It will make Tumblr so much more boring.

I'm going to need y'all to preemptively chill out because the actor's strike is going to mean a lot of things including shows and movies we've been anticipating being pushed way back, and absolutely minimal press tours for the next however long this lasts.

The effects of the writer's strike are months down the road which made it a whole lot easier to support because as third parties we weren't really being affected (yet), the effect of the actor's strike is going to be immediate and we're going to get a lot more propaganda of "these people are overpaid to begin with."

Remember our desire for content does not supersede these people's rights to live.

Support unions, support the strikes.

web 2.0 companies that try to frame people using adblockers as greedy freedloaders always conveniently turn their heads when those same “greedy freeloaders” tell them that advertisers are paying to put malicious and predatory ads on their playforms and adblock users are, by in large, using adblockers to protect themselves

Avatar

the first time i ever saw an adblocker recommended was for people with photosensitive epilepsy getting barraged with “congrats! you won!” style popups nonstop

the first time i ever personally used an adblocker was when deviantart’s excessive ad placement slowed down my household’s shared computer to the point it was unusable and my mom told me to stop using deviantart. so instead i installed an adblocker

and nowadays on Youtube and Facebook you get ads for casinos and alcohol targeted toward addicts and people with bipolar disorder, quack medicine targeted to people with chronic medical conditions, hate speech targeted toward the victims of said hate speech, and horror movie ads with flashing lights targeted toward…everyone.

and of course Google, who serves a majority of these ads, doesn’t actually care to remove any of the dangerous bullshit it shoves in your eyes but will expect you to pay them for it. sorry, i’d just rather not use youtube at that point. you had your chance.

Do not ever listen to a word of shame from a corporation. Their goal is only and always to extract maximum value from consumers.

Piracy, adblocking, data encryption, third-party repair, literally all of these things are, bottom-line, only bad for the corporations' record-breaking profit line. They are inherently good for the working person.

I’m sure someones already said this but I often see Tumblr described as a hellsite. This is fundamentally incorrect.

Tumblr is the faesite. Everybody is super confused and lost, you keep running into random places. Somehow you end up stuck there forever after interacting a couple of times. The people are all strange, everybody simultaneously seems to be from the future and the past as if time is meaningless.

YES

also technology breaks at random, and sometimes you just suddenly feel a thousand years old

can confirm, Got here when I encountered mushrooms
