BTS BEING ANNOYED WITH GENDER STEREOTYPES
JIMIN: “WHAT THE HECK IS ‘MEN’?”
When Jimin, V and Jungkook took a selfie. After the photo was captured Jimin wanted to see how the picture came out. Jungkook and Taehyung stated that men shouldn’t check their selfies but were quickly corrected by Jimin who shunned their words by saying “What the heck is ‘men’” or “What on earth is masculinity”. Meaning don’t be tied up by what a gender is confined to do or not to do. (Video HERE)
JUNGKOOK, SAID GREAT STYLE IS: “WEARING ANYTHING YOU LIKE, REGARDLESS OF GENDER”
When it comes to BTS and if you truck their fashion a bit, you will realize that they wear clothes designed originally for women too. This does not apply just for official shootings but also their casual fashion. (Cr twt getonswag for pic below)
At numerous occasions, BTS have been seen wearing the brand “Juun.J” by the Korean designer Jung Wook Juna which is known for its gender-flexible approach. Many of his pieces have the words “GENDERLESS” and “BOUNDRYLESS” emblazoned on them, thus emphasizing the designer’s unisex attitude towards fashion.
BTS also will wear corsets, “feminine” accessories or even skirts. Breaking the idea of “masculinity” that many thrive to show.
SUGA: “I ACTUALLY WANT ALL OF THEM (BT21) TO BE GENDER NEUTRAL“
While creating BT21, BTS give every detail a lot of thought. When asked about the genders of their characters. Suga stated that he doesn’t want them to be classified into two gender-groups. To which BTS approved.
RM: “NO MATTER…YOUR GENDER IDENTITY, JUST SPEAK YOURSELF”
When invited to give a speech at the UN. BTS insisted that everyone should be free to speak themselves no matter their gender identity.
JIMIN: “EYELINER IS LIKE MY LIFE”
A lot of people think makeup is just for women but BTS think otherwise. Aside from wearing it on stage. They enjoy it and find it empowering. Jimin stated for Ize Magazine “Eyeliner is like my life. When I don’t wear eyeliner, I am shy and I feel like I can’t dance hip hop. Sometimes, when I’m dancing in the practice room with no eyeliner, I feel like I can’t even make strong facial expressions. Because I look so simple in the mirror. (laughs) But really, how do they draw eyeliner? I’m fascinated, so I often watch the makeup artist that does our makeup, but I don’t think I can do it myself.” Jungkook is also known to be into makeup and even does his own eyeshadow at home. BTS also endorse a cosmetics company.
JUNGKOOK USING PERFUMES MARKETED TO FEMALES
When choosing a perfume, Jungkook do not care if it is for men or women. All he cares about is if it’s his taste. He is very sensitive to smell and enjoys things that smell good. Even if that perfume is a pink Victoria Secret’s perfume called “Noir Tease” that is made for women wishing to express their seductiveness and sexiness.
BTS WRITING GENDER NEUTRAL LYRICS
When asked during an interview for Billboard the question: ”The lyrics are gender neutral, which I think is really powerful. Was that a conscious decision?”. RM answered: ‘The lyrics were based on rare and special things in life. So, I thought, those feelings transcend genders, cultures and barriers between people.”
MEN CAN BE WEAK TOO
BTS express their emotions pretty well. They are not scared to be seen crying or looking weak. This way they were successful in communicating their feelings to millions around the world, and offer support to others.
BTS influences many and they know it. Society ties us with invisible chains and make us behave like puppets. These seven boys are making a change each day, erasing these rotten believes one by one in the hearts and minds of many.
I hope you enjoyed the post and you want more people to learn about these amazing boys’ movement, don’t hesitate to reblog ^^ Cr @mimibtsghost
Hey this is so cursed
Everything we know about the Touya's Disappearance
Im really into mysteries and this Touya mystery is driving me insane. So i wanna make a whole meta of all the clues, facts, implications, and things that could relate to the eldest Todoroki son Touya, his disappearance, and the possibility of him being Dabi.
1. Touya is no longer "in" the Todoroki family
What I mean by this is that he's not around the family, obviously. We never see a forth child interact with Enji, Rei or the other children (as Touya, at least) in person, there does not seem to be any evidence that they contact him via email, text, phone, etc. He doesn't visit Rei, doesn't show up at family gathers, etc. Touya just vanished from the family.
Furthermore, Touya is hardly mentioned current day, there does not appear to be photos of him in the home or in Reis hospital room, they do not speak about him. Even when Natsuo brings up Touya, the subject is quickly dropped and no one mentions the outburst Natsuo had or what he was referring to about Touya.
2. Touya is the eldest son
Right now all we know for sure is that Touya is the oldest boy of the children, as Natsuo refers to him as "big bro.". It's unsure if he is the eldest child (older than Fuyumi), or if he as old as Fuyumi (twin), or younger than Fuyumi but older than Natsuo.
The wiki page also refers to Touya as the eldest son of Enji and Rei Todoroki.
In current day, if Touya is alive, he could be as young as 20 or as old as 27. 20-22 of he was born directly before Natsuo, 23 if he was Fuyumi's twin, or 24-27+ if he was born within four years prior of Fuyumi or before that.
3. Touya seemed to have a physical disability caused by his quirk.
In flashbacks, Touya is shown much smaller than Fuyumi and Natsuo both in height and weight, giving the impression that he may have been sickly or suffering from malnutrition.
Endeavor refers to Touya as having "inherented Reis weak constitution," thus rendering him useless in Endeavor's attempt to train him. Constitution refers to a person's physical health and frame, a weak constitution refers to someone being of small and slender build, and can mean they were frail or unhealthy.
Dabi, who we are are positive is Touya, also would be considered disabled, in a way that his quirk seems to be burning him when he uses it, there could be further issues due to this disability that isn't outright stated like with the burns. To note a few, Dabi also appears unhealthy thin, is not seen to very physically active, and is, in a physical standpoint, weak (i.e. his clones are easily restrained, he's knocked unconscious with a single hit to the back of his head, he appears to be worn out after long or intense fights.)
4. Touya's disappearance seems to have something to do with his disability
When Endeavor mentions Touya to Shouto in the flashback, he refers to Touya's case as "regrettable" and then goes on to mention that Touya had a powerful fire quirk, but a weak constitution. This seems to imply his disability was in part related to his disappearance.
5. Touya was deemed a failure by Endeavor
At some point, Touya was given up on in the way of training and considered a failure like Natsuo and Fuyumi.
6. Touya being a failure/"nearly perfect" appears to also have something to do with his disappearance.
Again, when Touya was brought up in the flashback, it's repeated very clearly he was "almost perfect. Almost." By Endeavor. This line has a lot of weight to it and seems to imply that his "failure" had something to do with whatever happened to him, and that if he was perfect instead of "almost" perhaps the situation would be different.
7. Endeavor was abusive towards Touya
There's several times it is implied Endeavor abused Touya similar to his abuse to Rei and Shouto.
The flashback with Endeavor and Shouto, and how his fire was stronger than Endeavor's and that he was almost perfect or nearly perfect implies he was "trained" like Shouto before he was cast aside and/or before the Touya incident that caused his disappearance.
Natsuo directly states Endeavor cannot undo "what happened with Touya," which implies something happened to Touya that Endeavor was responsible for, and this is in the same breath he is discussing Endeavor's neglect and abuse.
Natsuo appears to also imply Endeavor hurt Touya, though he doesn't say his name, when talking to Rei saying that Endeavor can't be forgiven for "what he did to you (Rei), and Shouto and To..." It seems like he was going to say Touya there but for some reason didn't, likely because it could upset Rei to mention Touya.
8. The Touya incident time frame
It's unclear if the Touya incident occurred before, at the same time, or after Rei was hospitalized, but all the signs point to this happening in the same time frame, which is being speculated to have been ten years ago.
Touya was seen before Shouto had his scar and while Rei was there, but when Endeavor is discussing Touya to Shouto, Shouto already has his scar.
Again, with Touya's possible current age being between 20 and 27, he may have been anywhere between 10 and 17 when he disappeared.
9. Empty gap between Touya's Disappearance and Dabi's appearance
If Dabi is Touya, there is a rather large gap of time between Touya going missing and Dabi showing up that seems to be completely unknown as to where Touya was or where Dabi was.
As far as we know, after the Touya incident he was never seen or heard from again. There wasn't any sort of search for him that we can find, no mentions of him being spotted, and no contact from him with the rest of the family. It's as if he vanished completely.
Oddly enough, there is no sign of Dabi either until he appears. No one seems to know who he is or where he came from.
Dabi is said to have not committed any flashy crimes - therefore implying he wasn't a independent villain or a well-known vigilante, the police claim to not know his name or anything about him, only that there were "recent" reports of seeing a man with a patchwork face - this meaning he was only recently spotted, and with extensive scarring like that if he had been seen before someone would bring this up when seeing him again, and no one, villain or hero, seems to have heard of or seen him before or have any idea of who he is and where he came from.
This is by far one of the strangest things about the mystery to me, because there seems to be no sign of Touya or Dabi for a ten year time span. So if Touya is Dabi and he disappeared ten years ago, for ten long years he appears to have been no where before reappearing as Dabi and covered in burn scars and staples, at that. Like, seriously, where was he?! because I'm kind of terrified.
This might simply be that no one noticed him or he kept it on the down low and kinda avoided the public, but to me this seems to imply he wasn't around the public at all or even went out in public. And with the Frankinstein theory, this could mean for those ten years Touya was either dead or kidnapped/held somewhere and being experimented on before he reappeared as Dabi.
10. How Touya is shown in these flashbacks
Both times Touya is shown, he's drawn without a clear view of his face. One time he is shown facing away from the camera, the other time his hair is hanging in his face so that we really cannot see most of his face.
This could be because Hori didn't want him to be recognized as Dabi, but I think it's more of a symbolic show that Touya doesn't seem to have an identity or a sure sense of self.
Touya is shown in the one flashback displaying body language of timidness, uncertainty, and nervousness with his head down, his shoulders slouched a bit, legs noticably closer together than his siblings, and his hands clasped together in front of him, over his midsection which is in biological instinct of humans and animals what we cover when we feel threatened or vulnerable, as well as that he is much smaller compared to his younger siblings. This is a stance that screams "I am small, afraid, and vulnerable." Hes making himself look smaller and nonthreatening, trying not to be noticed or have attention drawn to him. This is also something seen often in children who have been violently abused. Touya looks incredibly vulnerable and unsure of himself, and honestly it's really sad to see a child like this.
11. No one recognizes Dabi as Touya
If Dabi is Touya, no one seems to realize or even think it may be him. Both Shouto and Enji see him in person and do not recognize him (the environment and situation may have something to do with this), And as one of of the main members of the League of Villains, Dabi's face im sure is all over news and online, but no one seems to recognize him, even though he would have the same quirk, and look very similar aside from age, black hair, and scars. None of the other family members and no one else even seems to think "oh wait, he kinda looks familiar and that quirk is familiar."
12. With everything that's implied surrounding the incident, it seems as though Touya is assumed dead.
A lot of what we know seems to point to this.
It's implied something "happened" to him, and whatever it was it was "regrettable/ashame."
It was related to his disability and him being "weak and frail."
There's no one looking for him, no mentions of him, no one talks about him, and there is no contact from him or attempt to contact him.
He's never seen again until (assuming he's Dabi) he reappears as Dabi and no one recognizes him.
Endeavor's abuse seems to have something to do with Touya's absence.
Touya's disappearance may have happened before Rei's mental breakdown, in a way causing it.
Again, Dabi appears out of no where with severe scarring that honestly is a surprise he survived through, and strange, crude medical staples that seems to be holding him together, all relating ti the Frankinstein theory which implies Dabi may actually be dead, was dead, or isn't fully human or alive.
.
Anyone has things they can add or things I've missed PLEASE do, im going detective on this shizz and ill add more if i find more.
Dabi's Condition and chance of survival
So I've been thinking a lot recently about Dabi's scars and his condition from his quirk so I started doing some digging both within the fandom and out of it to look for more information about how his quirk and disability is affecting him in the way of daily life, health, psychological health, and chance of survival.
This will be long, and kinda disturbing, and a fucking slap in the face to be honest. So get ready to get depressed.
We'll start with what we know:
- Dabi has a quirk unsuited for his body. Canonly, his body can't withstand his own flames and he's burned by them. Theorizing with the Touya theory, this is because his body is not resistant to fire due to his body being meant for an ice quirk.
- he currently has scars from burns over at least 80% of his body that we can tell. Face, arms, legs, neck, back, shoulders, chest, and hip/stomach all have extensive scars.
- these scars are reoccurring. Rather than from once event, information seems to suggest Dabi's scars are from repeated incidents over time and he is still burning himself if he overuses his quirk.
- the scars appear to be either third or fourth degree burns.
- time frame of when he got the burns is unclear.
- his scars are held in place by a number of surgical staples and piercings, which can tear and cause the areas around the burns to bleed and come apart from the seams. These scars are also shown bleeding at times, meaning due to the condition of them they can tear and reopen.
Now, these burns alone could be causing a very wide variety of difficulties and impairments for him physically, based on what we see in canon, what's implied, and what can happen in real life from this severe amount of burns and scarring he has.
Here's some complications caused by burns that could or do actually apply to Dabi physically:
- facial scars, especially around the eyes, can cause vision impairments, sometimes as severe as partial blindness. We see Dabi squint from time to time, suggesting he has trouble seeing and might be near-sighted. It's also possible that he has actual damage to his eyes, and while he can see, he may be experiencing partial blindness in one or both of his eyes, especially with the scars so close to his eyes.
- facial scars around or in the mouth, throat and jaw can cause a large variety of complications, including trouble breathing, eating, drinking, speaking, and using facial expressions.
- scarring around the hands, wrists, and arms can affect the ability to grasp, lift heavy things, and impair fine motor skills.
- scarring around the legs, ankles, and feet can cause trouble walking, running, going up and down stairs, climbing, etc.
- scarring in the torso (stomach, back, chest, sides, hips) cause a lot of difficulties moving around, stretching, bending over, and impair physical movements greatly. These scars especially can cause problems eating, gaining weight, and keeping weight as the scars around the stomach area will stretch and tear when eating or gaining fat in that area.
- scars from third degree burns like this can also affect a person's pain tolerance and management (making them have a higher tolerance for pain or a lesser tolerance), immune system (making it easier for them to become sick), senses such as hearing, smelling, sight, and taste. Cause difficulties with the blood stream, heart, liver, nerves, brain, and lungs as all og these organs and body functions and more have to work harder to keep the person alive and healthy.
- third degree burns can send a person into shock and cardiac arrest due to the extreme amount of pain and a potentially deadly drop in blood pressure known. Fluid can also become trapped inside the body, leading to swelling known as edema. If tissues and organs do not receive enough oxygen because of shock, edema, or something else, they suffer damage and can fail. The lungs, heart, brain, and kidneys are particularly susceptible, causing kidney failure, heart problems, and brain damage.
- since Dabi's burns are reoccurring, he is at risk of entering shock and suffering from organ failure every time he overuses his quirk, and damages his internal organs such as the heart, kidney and lungs, and his brain, more and more each time. Each time he suffers from severe pain if the area he burns still has nerves until he burns off the nerve endings. For example, whenever he got those recent scars on his chest and hip, he felt that.
- Technically, he could die at any moment just by overusing his quirk.
Now thats just physically, lets get into the psychological and mental conditions that are possible:
-obviously theres the psychological trauma from this kind of traumatic event, and Dabi's are repeated, over and over again. He knows itll keep happening too. This alone can cause depression, hopelessness, ptsd, suicidal idealation, and even delusional disorders such as depersonalization, paranoia, delusions, and dissociation.
- People with traumatic injuries like this are more likely to become dependant and addicted to pain medication, illict drugs, and alcohol in an attempt to manage pain, and are more likely to commit suicide. This is just from the burns, not even including trauna from years of childhood physical and emotional abuse and a decade of homelessness.
- the cut off of oxygen to the brain and blood stream during shock can cause irreversible brain damage, resulting in memory loss, changes in mood and behaviors, changes in sleeping and eating habits, hallucinations, delusions, trouble focusing, trouble retaining new infromation, and loss of time (black outs or dissociation). So as much as we may wanna joke his low stats in the way of knowledge and technique is dumb todoroki genes, its far more likely these low stats are due to repeated brain damage from entering shock and cardiac arrest over and over and almost dying during his life. So... maybe those jokes are getting out of hand too.
This infromation really paints a horrible picture of just how badly Dabi is suffering every single day due to his conditions. How much hes been through and the amount of agony hes been having to deal with each day... how hes alive and even able to function is unbelievable. He should be dead, and he likely wishes he were. But hes still alive through all this, and thats a testiment to how strong he really is. (Id personally curl up in a corner and die somewhere if i were him. My boi is so strong.)
But now it puts his stats into perspective and it is a dark realization.
His power is lower due to his body slowly shutting down and he's becoming too weak to physically keep it up like he has.
His technique and knowledge like i said contributes to brain damage and psychological trauma.
His speed is low and has always been low because literally any movement is painful for him and moving too quickly could literally tear him apart.
And he's physically weak and unable to battle for too long because his body is shutting down on him.
Basically, he's dying. Agonizingly slow and painfully.
Now, what's this mean in the way of survival?
Will he survive? It's highly unlikely he'll even live much longer at the rate he's going, especially if he keeps hurting himself. The amount of intervention to help him would be insane and intense, and some of these things cannot be repaired.
In our world, it's possible for someone to live from being burned like this, but recovery is a long and difficult process and the victim will never be the same. They'll likely be disabled for the rest of their lives, have severe scarring, and die much younger due to this. Treatments are pretty wide ranging from skin grafts, synthetic materials, ointments and medicines, compresses, plastic surgery and likely a long, long time in rehabilitation.
In the world of bnha there's a little more they might be able to do with more advanced science and healing quirks, etc, of Dabi can get access to these things and stops using his quirk. If not, he probably doesn't have much longer. Like I said, he could technically get into a battle in the next chapter, burn himself, enter shock and cardiac arrest, and then die. Technically, the damage of his body and internal organs could cause his body to shut down and he could just drop dead. Technically he could experience heart failure, and then he's gone. He could die at any point now and I am SCARED.
I am truly hoping Dabi doesn't die during the story, I hope somehow he gets the help he needs even while paying for his crimes. He's suffering terribly day to day and I can't imagine how he does it. I hope he survives and gets what he needs, some form of help with his quirk.
Okay, so now I'm really made myself upset but at the same time, can we just acknowledge how strong he really is?? Like, oh my God, how does he do it? I would die, I would beg for death abd i think everyone else would too. But Dabi's there, living like this and still determined to complete his goals. He might hurt himself more, suffer more, he might and likely will die, but he's doing it anyway because he feels he has to. That's not stupidity, that's strength. Our boy is so fucking strong and I'm so proud of him i wanna cry.
He better make it through this. He deserves a happy ending in some way even if it seems doomed.
TOUYA “DIED” IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THIS WAS HIS UNIFORM THAT’S WHY IT WAS SO BEAT UP AND DIDN’T FIT 😭
Dabi and Cremation
This is going to be a long post on this topic, it’s going to be complicated since I’m not a native Japanese speaker, but I will do my best to explain. I’m going to talk about Dabi’s name before we talk about cremation and what it means to Dabi’s character.
Rei Todoroki
this is basically just an idea for what the todoroki household is/was like, it goes in chronological order and ended up being a lot longer than i thought it would be. it kind of goes with my previous headcanon but doesn’t we to. anyways, i hope you enjoy it!
* It didn’t start as shit
* Yes Rei was sold off but not without her permission, no she didn’t really want to marry Enji but a part of her thought that maybe she could make this work
* Their first meeting was when she’d first learned the of the arrangement
* Their second had been a nice, simple date
* It wasn’t everything she’d ever wanted but it was sweet - Enji was clearly nervous but trying to hide it
* They married two months later under the cherry blossoms and Rei was happy
- For the first time in her life she’d gotten to see the ocean, with Enji at her side watching her out of the corner of his eye and she’d smiled
* Within the next year her first born, Touya, was born
* Rei was the happiest she’d ever been when her son was born and Enji seemed happy too - a proud father indeed
* Touya was a quiet baby - he was never really fussy and didn’t cry often and when he did Rei would form small ice creations in her palm for him to watch with wide blue eyes
- He looked so much like his father, even from a younger age and Rei smiled softly at that
* Touya was two when his younger sister Fuyumi was born and he was entranced, Rei was too, she loved both of her children more than anything else - Enji was as proud as ever when he held his little girl in one arm and his son in the other
- She could remember laughing wildly as Enji scooped her into his arms with Fuyumi - three years old, on his shoulders and Touya charging after them into the waves when they’d gone on their first family vacation
* Touya’s quirk manifested when he was five and things began to change
- Touya’s scream of agony had alerted her to something being very wrong and she’d rushed to him only to find a bright blue fire eating away at her son’s skin
* Rei’s son could produce beautiful blue fire that was stronger than his father’s - Enji should’ve been ecstatic because a quirk like that was perfect for a hero, but there was one flaw, Rei’s son should’ve never been born with a fire quirk
* Touya began to train with his father, to learn to control the azure fire for maybe an hour a day and it warmed Rei’s heart to see her son’s smile but chilled it to see the thinly hidden disappointment in Enji’s eyes
* A year later Fuyumi’s quirk manifested at the age of four - ice
* Enji began to pay less attention to his daughter as All Might’s position as the number one hero remained
* Rei held up her end of their ‘deal’ and within the next year Natsuo was born
* Touya was excited to be an older brother again and Fuyumi wanted to pass on all of the things he’d taught her - Enji wasn’t there on July 1st when Rei’s third child was born
- The Todorokis go to the beach again but this time Rei isn’t laughing wildly because Enji is stuck at work but her children are splashing wildly in the waves as she holds her youngest in her lap and she smiles softly
* Touya was taken into the training room more often now and for longer periods of time - Fuyumi and Natsuo ghosts to their father
* Rei remembers the pain in her heart the first time her oldest - now six years old, comes rushing out of the training room in tears with blisters along his arms and wrist
* She remembers that first screaming match with Enji as she holds her oldest against her chest and he sobs, soaking the collar of her shirt
- She’d found a vase of her favorite flowers on the kitchen table the next morning and smiled sadly
* When Touya is seven she drives him to the hospital because of a broken nose and she breaks down as she thinks about the man she married and how he’s hurting her children
- Another vase of flowers and she can’t help the frown that creases her brows at the sight of them
* Touya is seven and he no longer believes in heroes
* Rei holds her breath as she watches All Might win first place in the hero rankings again
* Two months after the hospital incident and Rei finds herself shocked as she lays on the kitchen floor, a hand pressed against her cheek in shock, Enji hit her
- There were no flowers on the kitchen table the next morning and Rei lets a tear slip down her cheek
* When Touya is nine he doesn’t cry anymore as she ices his burns and gently brushes her hands through his red hair, red like his father’s
- He looked so much like his father a fact that Rei no longer smiles at
* Natsuo is four when the doctor says he’ll never develop a quirk and Enji is furious
- Natsuo is four when he’s first told that he’s useless
* Rei may end up with a black eye but she feels a pride at the fact that Enji has one to match
* Rei has her last child less than a year later and she tries to feel as happy as Natsuo is about the new addition to the family but she catches the look that Fuyumi and Touya exchange and she feels her heart shatter
- The Todorokis don’t go on vacations anymore
* When Touya is thirteen the skin on his arms is tinted purple and there are permanent bags under his eyes that no thirteen year old should have, Rei can’t bring herself to ice his burns from ‘training’ anymore and Fuyumi takes over that role for her
- Rei misses the ocean
* Fuyumi is twelve and she’s practically more of a mother to Rei’s children than Rei herself is - Fuyumi’s always been strong
* Touya’s fourteen and Rei can hardly look him in the eyes anymore because they’re blue so, so blue but he’s fourteen and he’s taking punches for her and helping Fuyumi make dinner, he’s fourteen and he’s never gotten to live his life for himself
- She hopes her oldest son doesn’t notice when she begins to shy away from him (he does) and she hopes he can forgive her for slowly slipping away from herself (he will)
* Natsou is eight and the light in his gray eyes has dimmed and he’s no longer as loud and excited at home
* Shouto is five when his quirk first shows - ice, Rei breathes a sigh of relief because she couldn’t save her eldest but maybe she can save her youngest
* A month and a half later Shouto’s arm bursts into flames and Rei’s heart shatters all over again
* Touya’s training lessens as his younger brother takes his place and Rei still can’t bare the sight of him because he looks so much, too much like Enji
* Her oldest lashes out more and argues and fights back
- He is no longer a quiet child, he’s angry and sad
* Touya refuses to take the UA entrance exam and ends up in Class 1B at Shiketsu high and for the first time in years Rei holds her oldest as she gently runs her hands through his red hair and looks into his tired cerulean eyes, fingers cooling the blistered skin across his shoulders and back
* She bandages him up and Rei can’t help but miss the ocean
Not to be salty and rain on everyone's parade but while researching for this depression inducing meta I'm working on, i found the reasoning behind Dabi's stats in knowledge and technique being so low.
Third degree burns, especially all over the body can send someone into cardiac arrest and shock, cutting off blood and oxygen to the brain, therefore resulting in brain damage. Which can cause a variety of mental issues, including memory loss, trouble concentrating, trouble retaining new information, trouble comprehending, and loss of time/black outs.
So, as funny as a meme it may have seemed to think "ha, Dabi's stupid cause he inherented the Dumbass Todoroki Gene, actually, it's far more likely hes suffering from brain damage due to entering shock repeatedly by being horrifically burned over and over again and nearly dying.
I ruined my own night so now I'm ruining yours.
Can we talk about how happy Natsuo looks in this panel?
And it seems like the expression is mainly focused on Touya. Either he really looked up to his older brother or he was excited to get to know him after previously being separated, most likely due to their father’s interference.
Also, it should be noted that any time the Touya was verbally brought into the conversation, it was Natsuo who raised the subject.
So Natsuo obviously loved his older brother a lot, he won’t allow whatever happened to him to be swept under the rug and forgotten about. I wonder how close they were? I hope we find out all about Touya, and what his relationships with his siblings were like in this arc.
(Holding out for Touya was Best Big Bro™ to be proven true, but even if not, it will always be my headcanon for him.)
dabi is todoroki touya: the proof
This is gonna be a long one.
Ever since Dabi showed off his Quirk in the Training Camp Arc, a particular theory began cropping up. It’s arguably the largest fan theory in the entire BNHA fandom, and with good reason. At the point we’re at now in the story, it’s almost like it’s not even a theory anymore– it’s just something we’re waiting for Horikoshi to make canon with one panel. The theory of the day is: Is Dabi a Todoroki?
Today, we’re going to lay out everything that points to Dabi being the estranged brother of one Todoroki Shouto, and if you didn’t believe it before, hopefully you will now.
Let’s take it back to the beginning– if Dabi is a Todoroki, who the Hell is he? After the Calvary Battle in Season Two, Todoroki reveals the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father to Midoriya and introduces the idea of “Quirk marriages;” Todoroki was the perfect blend of Endeavor and Rei’s Quirks. And in a flashback during Todoroki and Midoriya’s battle, there’s a shot of Todoroki’s other siblings, or Endeavor’s failures, playing in the background as Todoroki is dragged away. Soon, we’d come to know the names of the children– Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Touya.
What we knew about Touya at that point in time was that he was small and presumably physically weak, due to how easily he falls while playing as Natsuo laughs at him instead of helping him out. And from the way that Todoroki family genetics work, it can be assumed that he has fire power, due to his red hair. He’s also the oldest of the four, despite being very short.
Touya is the only named Todoroki sibling not to appear and interact with his family. Fuyumi talks to Todoroki in season two, and although Natsuo has not made his proper anime debut, he eats with his family in later chapters. That’s kind of weird, right? I mean… Unless Touya has been interacting with the main cast the entire time, and none of them have realized it.
Enter Dabi, a villain who desires to change the integrity of the hero world. Dabi has interacted with both Todoroki and Endeavor– the two members of his potential family the least likely to recognize him. Todoroki because he was kept away from his siblings and forced through individual training (abuse), and Endeavor because he was neglectful of his failures. But we’ll get into that later.
The first time Dabi speaks is when he’s brought before Shigaraki under the pretense of joining the league. When Dabi insults Shigaraki’s judgement if he plans on letting Toga in, he retorts that at least she told him her full name, and that Dabi only gave him a moniker. Dabi says that he will tell them his name when the time comes. Even now, Dabi’s real name has not come from his own mouth.
The next time he takes centre-stage is as one of the antagonists of the Training Camp Arc and the leader of the Vanguard Action Squad. Then we get a glimpse of his Quirk– blue flames. Other than Midoriya’s father, the only characters with fire Quirks up until this point were members of the Todoroki family. Dabi’s is different in the way that it’s bright blue– the same colour as his eyes, which are given a close-up as he uses his fire. Which are, coincidentally, the same colour as Endeavor’s, and one of Todoroki’s. Is there any significance in the flame colour, other than aesthetic? Yes, actually. Scientifically speaking, blue flame is much hotter than orange flame, which seem to be what Todoroki and Endeavor primarily use. But it’s not the first time we’ve seen this colour– Endeavor himself uses blue fire to fend off a Noumu during the Hero Killer Arc. Even then, he comments that it raises his body temperature to a dangerous level. Dabi seems to be, under the assumption that the colour is more than just aesthetic, operating with flames hot enough to damage him. And would you look at that, he’s covered in scar tissue, all over his face, eyes, neck, appendages, and back. These scars will be important later.
After Compress has secured Bakugou and the villains make a plan to rendez-vous and abscond, Midoriya, Todoroki, Shouji, Uraraka, and Asui attempt to jump into the fray to rescue both him and Tokoyami. When Aoyama, bless his heart, catches Compress off guard with his Naval Laser, both Todoroki and Shouji jump to retrieve their kidnapped compatriots. Shouji nabs Tokoyami, but just as Todoroki is about to grab Bakugou, a patched hand snatches him away. “That’s sad, Todoroki Shouto,” is what Dabi says as he lifts the compressed Bakugou out of reach. While it’s not strange that Dabi knows the name of the runner-up in the highly publicized U.A Sports Festival, it is a little odd that he would refer to him by full name, in such a mocking tone, in the middle of this tense situation. The dramatic lighting as the two move in different directions almost screams “this is a scene you need to pay attention to.”
As mentioned before, Todoroki has no reason to recognize Dabi, or Touya. But Dabi certainly knows Todoroki.
Later, when the Pros break into the bar to rescue Bakugou, the police read off the real names of the villains– but Dabi’s is never mentioned, almost like they couldn’t find out what it was.
Here ends Dabi’s adventure through questionable heritage– at least, for what’s in the anime. Luckily for us, there’s over one hundred chapters that have yet to be animated, and it’s within these pages that Dabi being a Todoroki becomes less of a theory, and more of a given. So if you’d like to keep as spoiler free as possible, I recommend you opt out now.
During the Overhaul arc, Toga and Twice are the only members of the League directly involved with the raid. Dabi accompanies Shigaraki on his mission to confront Chisaki, and during the course of this, he catches the attention of the Pro Hero, Snatch. During their battle, Snatch asks Dabi if he thinks about the families of those he kills, and how they feel. Soon after, Compress traps Snatch inside one of his marbles with Dabi’s fire, which kills Snatch.
The next arc Dabi shows up in is when the Todoroki connection stops being subtext and just becomes, well, text.
Dabi shows up in front of Hawks and Endeavor with the intention of getting into a fight. He only greets Endeavor, and hesitantly at that, saying “nice to meet you, Endeavor, I guess,” or something along those same lines. It should be mentioned that all of 1-A is watching this fight transpire via the TV, and at this point, it focuses in on Todoroki’s face, who recalls the name “Dabi” and we’re treated to a flashback panel of the “How sad, Todoroki Shouto” bit from the Training Camp Arc. Endeavor recognizes Dabi as the one who killed Snatch, nothing more, and Dabi doesn’t even seem to remember the life he has taken. Before leaving, Dabi refers to Endeavor as “Todoroki Enji–” his full name. This occurrence is a little stranger than Dabi knowing Todoroki’s name. Pro Hero names aren’t typically publicized in the same way U.A students’ are. It’s weird for Dabi to know and/or use the name Enji unless he has a personal relationship with him. Such as… If they were family.
After his meeting with Hawks, Dabi leaves on his own. He then remembers Snatch, and recalls how he asked if Dabi cared about the families of his victims. Dabi laughs, and then the patch of burned skin below his eye starts to leak blood, which drips down to his chin, implying he’s started to cry. He wipes away the blood tears and mumbles to himself; “I thought so hard about it I went crazy.” Dabi has put a lot of thought into families, it seems, and thinking about it drove him mad.
The next few pieces of evidence relate to Touya, not to Dabi, and the things that happened to him. After his battle with the Noumu and Dabi, Endeavor returns to his home, only to be roasted by Todoroki and snubbed by Natsuo, which is perfectly understandable. Natsuo gets up to leave, not being able to stand his father’s presence. He yells at Endeavor, not being able to forgive him in the same way Rei and Fuyumi can, and not ready to make nice with him just because he defeated one villain. He says: “You completely neglected us, and left us to listen to Mom screaming and Shouto crying. Not to mention what happened with Big Bro Touya […]”
Well, Touya is finally mentioned by one of his siblings. And it seems like whatever happened to him, it wasn’t good. The way it’s framed makes it seem like Endeavor was responsible for what befell Touya, such as pushing him too far in training. The reader is left to wonder: maybe Todoroki wasn’t the first trainee under Endeavor’s wing. Maybe something went wrong with one of the other children.
But all we have to go on is Natsuo’s cryptic words, after which Todoroki claims: “I’ve never seen Natsu get that emotional.”
Until, we get more insight into Todoroki’s abuse during the Joint Training Arc. In a flashback, we see Endeavor yelling at a young, vomiting Todoroki, saying: “Quit pretending to be so frail! Touya’s case was regrettable. He possesses even greater firepower than mine, and yet… He inherited Rei’s weak constitution. He… was almost perfect. Almost.”
So, now the idea of Touya that we have is that he had very strong flames, but his body wasn’t able to handle it. He was almost perfect, but this fatal flaw made it so that he could not succeed Endeavor. Alright.
During Todoroki’s fight against Tetsutetsu, Tetsutetsu claims that the other’s flames won’t work, because Tetsutetsu’s strength was obtained by overcoming his limits. These words trigger a traumatic flashback for Todoroki, where he remembers Endeavor shouting at him to surpass his limits– there’s no way he can’t do it, he’s just not trying hard enough. Trying to pull himself out of the flashback, Todoroki repeats Midoriya’s inspirational words to himself, and then cranks his flames up to eleven, so hot that they begin to melt the cameras. Because of the black and white nature of the manga, we can’t tell if the flames are meant to be blue or white, but one can assume they’re no longer orange. Todoroki notes that the heat is causing him to become dizzy and sluggish, and that he needs to stop or he’ll burn himself. Burn himself, huh? The heat, in combination with the debris, causes Todoroki to pass out before doing any permanent damage to himself.
So, we have Todoroki, who has acknowledged that his fire can hurt him if he overdoes it. Then, we have his brother Touya, who has more powerful fire than Endeavor, and presumably Todoroki, who is pretty weak to fire. Don’t you think that combination would lead to, I don’t know, burn scars all over one’s body?
Let me paint you a story. Granted, it’s not based on much, and if you have more theories, let me hear em!
Rei and Endeavor have had their first child. At age 4, he manifests his Quirk– a fire Quirk. Endeavor immediately starts training him to surpass All Might, but Touya’s hesitant with his Quirk, because he’s sensitive to it. After Todoroki is burned by his mother, in the lull where he’s not at his greatest, Endeavor returns to training Touya. Just like what he did with Todoroki, Endeavor screams at Touya to surpass his limits. The stress causes Touya to unleash his full potential– blue hot flames, which has severe physical repercussions, burning his entire body. Endeavor freaks out and tries to speed along the recovery as fast as possible, because Touya was almost perfect. Going by hair colours, neither Fuyumi or Natsuo have the firepower, or strength of firepower, that Endeavor wanted. Returning to Todoroki, Endeavor casts Touya aside. The experience completely traumatizes Rei, who breaks down. Bitter, Touya runs away, buys some hair dye, and begins to hate everything hero society stands for. He was violently abused by the Number 2 Hero, who is revered by the public. And so, he begins to go by the name Dabi– Cremation. He does not create fire. With it, he wants to destroy the way things are.
In Todoroki Shouto: Origin, as Todoroki is being pulled away from looking at his siblings, where Touya appears to be alive and well, he has no burn on his eye. When Endeavor is telling Todoroki about how Touya’s case was regrettable, the burn mark is there. Meaning, something happened to Touya in between those two scenes.
I initially wrote this during the Meta Liberation Army Arc– when the villains were getting more depth, but each time it got to Dabi, the narration pulled away. I thought maybe we’d get an answer at the end. But now, as we’ve entered a new arc that seems to have Hawks and Dabi as main players, perhaps we’ll finally get the info we’ve been craving.

Dabi's ear and possible symbolism
Okay, so its been pointed out a few times Dabi's missing about half of his right ear. Ive seen this brought up several times, but i haven't seen anyone discuss possible symbolism behind it. So, i decided i am going to. Excuse my somewhat rambling.
While researching this, i came across several different things: The biblical act of cutting off the right ear, The act of Cropping (to human criminals as Punishment), Symbolism in dreams. I want to look further into the other topics too and maybe write posts on those as well, but the main one that stuck out to me is the symbolism of a sliced/maimed ear in biblical times, and the story of Malchus who's ear was cut off by Peter in the book of Luke.
Imma just put a warning im going to be discussing things that might be disturbing. Also with the Dabi is Touya theory, obviously abuse.
We'll start here with the story from the bible of how, during Jesus’ arrest, someone associated with Jesus (believed to be Peter) sliced off the right ear of the slave of the Jewish high priest (named as Malchus in the Gospel of John). Jesus stopped his disciple and said "no more" and then healed the slave's ear.
The biblical story of Malchus' sliced ear:
First thing to note here is the fact this man who had his ear sliced was a slave, technically was called a doulos, the greek word for a "bondservant." The dictionary definition of doulos reads "properly someone who belongs to another; a bond-slave, without any ownership rights of their own." The term is used in the New testament in the "highest diginity." It describes believers of Christ who had willingly submitted to him as devoted followers.
Now how does the cutting of the ear relate to this? In two other books of the bible (Deuteromony and Exodus) it refers to cutting the ear of a slave to make that slave permanent, a slave to the master forever.
This could apply to Dabi in several ways, really. In the way of his motives, him following Stain's vision, and/or his possible relation to Endeavor.
- With the assumption that he is actually Todoroki Touya, this could apply as Touya, along with the rest of the family, were property of Endeavor, and had no rights of their own. From what we know about Touya, its been implied Touya, like Rei and Shouto, was subjected to physical abuse at his Father's hands and used for his quirk before being cast aside like Fuyumi and Natsuo was. He didn't have any ownership of himself, and like the other children, was born soley for Endeavor's goals. And with the assumption that he was trained like Shouto, was Touya willing in this at least at some point?
Its hard to say. We really don't know much about Touya because everything surrounding Touya and whatever happened to him seems to have traumatized the entire family into almost never speaking of him. But from what I've gathered despite at some point before Endeavor ruled him as a failure, there was a point in time where he was considered "nearly perfect," with a extremely powerful fire quirk, and Endeavor had hopes for him. He would have likely been a prodigy had it not been for the backlash of his quirk not being suited for his body. Even Endeavor spoke about Touya as if he had promise if not for inherently Rei's constitution. So, im believing that at one point Touya may have wanted to become a hero as his Father once wanted for him, willingly wanted to train his quirk, may have even been devoted/bound to his Father in this, and may have been willing in this at least for a while before, its likely him being cast aside could have lead to whatever traumatic event happened surrounding his disappearance because he was so devoted. Its possible he wanted to gain approval from his father through the abuse and willingly devoted himself to it, even though it was too much for him and, to be honest, straight up abuse.
Now, by his ear being cut/damaged (whether or not the missing part of his ear has anything to do with Endeavor or was directly or indirectly caused by him), it could symbolize Dabi (as Touya) being permanently bound to Endeavor either by referring to him being a Todoroki, therefore bound by blood, or in his vengefulness towards Endeavor, bound by revenge. In my mind, this could symbolize his connection to the Todoroki household and how, even though he left under whatever circumstances, he's still a slave to his past and can't escape from it, he's fated to alwaya be Touya even if he disappeared and began calling himself Dabi.
- in relation to Stain, right off the bat Dabi dubs himself as "the one who will carry out the hero killer's mission." He joins the league because he believes theyre allied with Stain's ideals. He's a willing, devoted follower of Stain.
So the missing part of his ear could symbolize his permanent devotion to Stain and Stain's ideology, to villainy and his mission/goals as a whole.
- It could apply he's a permanent slave to villainy and his goals in a way. From what we now know about how badly his quirk effects him, we know his quirk is killing him over time the more he uses it and he knows this and continues to go down the path he's going. He has these goals, whatever they may be exactly, that he is willing to die for. He is basically willingly killing himself with his quirk to accomplish these goals he has set. That's devotion.
How this could apply to him in the future, I'm not sure. This could technically tell us that he is set in his ways, even if it kills him, hes a permanent villain so to speak. It could also tell us that through everything he's still a Todoroki, he's still Touya and he's unable to change that, therefore fated to always be who he is and he'll either have to face that and perhaps accept it (redemption, maybe???) Or that hes fated to his desire for revenge because of his past, and that could kill him.
I might be just grasping at straws cause who really knows. I could be totally wrong in what his mutated ear symbolizes, if it symbolizes anything at all. But Horikoshi has a way of including details like little pieces to a puzzle for us to put together and for some reason, especially with Dabi. We know very little about Dabi in the way of outright stated facts about him, but his entire character seems to be designed with a bunch of clues, and its like a rabbit hole really, people notice something about him that seems a bit off and then we dive in and possibly unlock something, usually something very grim and disturbing (like the frankinsteins monster theory, for example, and now this).
I don't think Hori just threw this in there. I think it means something.
I’m asking you because I’m just really curious what other hints are there and I’m not messing with you
oh, okay, sorry! I just talk constantly about how Dabi is Touya so you caught me a little off guard there.
In case you’re interested, I have a masterpost of all my meta on the subject that you can find here. It’s pretty long though, so in the meantime, let’s do a recap.
A not exhaustive list of hints of why Dabi is Touya (includes manga spoilers)
1. Touya was said to have a greater firepower than Enji. Dabi’s flames are blue, thus burning hotter than Enji’s. Touya was also said to have a genetic makeup that made his body unsuited to handle fire (as it was better suited for ice). Dabi gives off a burnt-flesh smell every time he overuses his quirk because his body can’t handle the heat for long.
2. When Dabi was first introduced, he made it a point not to say his real name to the League. From a narrative perspective, it makes no sense for Hori to choose not to disclose his name if he were a character with no ties to the existing cast. By making him use a pseudonym, and by drawing our attention to the fact, Hori wanted us to know that maybe we do already know who he is.
3. Following this pattern, whenever Touya appeared in flashbacks, we never saw his face properly. Once, he was giving us his back. The other time, he had hair covering up his eyes. Again, no need for the mystery if he didn’t prove to be someone we already knew.
4. Dabi has blue eyes the same shade as Enji. He also almost certainly dyes his hair, and this might or might not be an attempt to hide his real identity.
5. Dabi was introduced in the story as a follower of Stain. Stain wanted to rid society of the “rotten heroes” who are in it for the glory and fame. Stain hated individualistic heroes who only ever thought about their own gain, and almost attacked Endeavor himself when they faced each other for the first time. Of course an ideology that legitimizes the hatred Touya felt for his abusive father would definitely appeal to him enough to become a villain.
6. During his first appearance, Dabi was shown following the news report on the facts of Hosu. Officially, Endeavor is the one who defeated Stain. This is a very neat way to establish a conflict. As far as we know, Dabi hadn’t committed any major crimes before this point. Then we saw him following Stain’s case closely, sympathize with Stain’s ideology, notice his father’s involvement, and then reaching out to those who were said to have had ties with Stain, the LoV.
7. Here’s an extensive meta on this, but despite following Stain’s ideology (at least on the surface), imho what really appealed to Dabi was the fact that Stain was the only person who addressed that there can be bad heroes, thus legitimizing his personal vendetta. He’s a revenge-driven character, not an ideology driven one, and that aligns perfectly with him being Touya Todoroki.
8. When Enji first properly faced Dabi, his vision was blurry and unfocused. From a narrative perspective, there’s no point in that unless Horikoshi didn’t want him to immediately recognize Dabi as his son and keep the reveal for much later on. If Enji is being set up to fail as the number one, and he needs to fail to realize that his current way of “making amends” isn’t enough, then Dabi’s reveal as Touya will play a major role in that. But first, he needed to establish Enji as someone successful, in order to make his fall more impactful later on, and that couldn’t have happened if the truth about the abuse came out before the public could applaud him (it still sucks tho)
9. Dabi being Touya perfectly fits the Golden Child vs Scapegoat theme that Enji’s Narcisistic Personality Disorder has going on. If you read on the subject, you’ll find a lot of similarities with the Todoroki family dynamics. Shouto, with the perfect balance between ice and fire that Enji had always wanted, is the golden child, while Touya, with his “faulty” and “worthless” quirk that damaged his body, is the perfect scapegoat. Here’s a brief summary of how this works (source):
Shouto was constantly asked to give up his personal wishes in order to meet the expectations of his abuser (aka being his perfect heir and the recipient for all of Enji’s ambitions). Whenever Shouto failed to meet those expectations, he was always mocked and belittled (”are you done with your childish tantrum?”). He ended up losing contact with his authentic self (until he met Midoriya who reminded him that his flames are his own power and not just Enji’s shadow). Touya was the scapegoat given cruelty (being called worthless), criticism and shaming (”he was almost perfect. Almost.”). He ended up leaving the abusive family and became Dabi.
10. Dabi’s burns are on the same ares of skin from where both Shouto and Enji emit their own flames.
11. Here’s a meta on this, but Dabi has an established pattern where he always mocks heroes for prioritizing saving people over anything else. He shows this with every pro hero or hero trainee he meets, except for one, Enji. Enji who is an abusive piece of shit who never cared about anyone but himself.
12. When thinking about Snatches’ words (“didn’t you think of how their families would feel?”), Dabi was shown in a sympathetic manner, hinting that family is a sore subject for him too.
13. Dabi and Shouto have A LOT of things in common and here’s a good list of them. (I made one too but Rina’s actually a serious list unlike my own, lol)
14. Dabi’s panicked expression mirrors Rei’s (see here).
15. When they go all out, both Dabi and Shouto can summon massive amounts of fire/ice at the drop of a hat, and both are shown to have very little restraint and concern about their surrounding when they’re in a tight spot. Here’s a visual of what I’m talking about.
16. Dabi and Shouto also show really similar fighting style, suggesting they were trained by the same person or raised observing one:

17. Rina already mentioned this if you read their post, but let me just emphasize it again: much like pre-development Shouto, Dabi shows signs of being uncooperative and highly individualistic, mirroring their father’s mindset. While Shouto later on learned to trust his classmates though, Dabi never did. (here’s another meta on this)
18. Whenever Dabi met a Todoroki, he always called them by their full name. He only ever does this with the Todorokis.
19. It’s possible (if not implied) that the reason why Dabi was willing to listen to Hawks despite Hawks being a very recognizable top hero and also very good at his job, was that Hawks insulted Enji’s approach on heroics on live television.
20. Dabi has beef with Endeavor specifically, because not only did he change the plans for the attack in Fukuoka only after he learned that Hawks had brought Enji along, but he also shows an incredible amount of emotion (something very unlike him) when he might just be able to finally kill him, something he very likely spent a lot of time fantasizing about. He was positively thrilled, and he was smiling so hard his staples almost tore his skin. That’s a pretty big hint that it was personal.
21. Dabi started really hating Apocrypha after he made a speech that really mirrored Enji’s own mindset.
I’m probably still missing some because as I said before, there’s loads of hints. Forgive me in advance if that’s the case
