Oh my goodness, the woodpecker 😆 (other two are Oriole and female Grosbeak)
The Bluebird just started her nest but is already almost done. Today, she added a little "blanket". I'll add a wren guard here once the first egg is laid, which I expect tomorrow or Monday, and then hope for the best. I edited little to show her process. Enjoy.
(This box is similar to the other one but has just one entrance hole.)
The Chickadee also started a nest and already has seven eggs. She built with moss and soft grass and later added fur to it, also to conceal the eggs. I have added a Wren guard to the box as soon as I saw the eggs, and I hope it will keep the babies safe until they are big enough.
(The nestbox is a homemade Gilbertson style box but with a diameter of 6 instead of 4 inches. It has two entrance holes (I can vary the size and number with a shroud from the outside) for better ventilation and parent access. The camera is a Wyze v3 that is looking in from the roof. Info for a Wren guard can be found on https://www.sialis.org/wrens/#guard)
Hi guys, brain hemorrhages (or whatever bleeds in the brain are called) are no fun and I need to heal from one. I’m sorry and will be back with bird photos as soon as I can. Enjoy spring for me!
The Chickadees chose to nest here again ❤️
I am so sorry I haven’t been active here this week. I’ve been sick all week and had/ have no energy to go through bird photos or sit on the computer for longer. Hopefully this will be over soon.
I always find it fascinating when nature does things that we cannot manipulate in any way and that remind us of how magnificent and powerful she is. And the amount of awe it inspires is not related to the size of the event or object. The upcoming solar eclipse is just as amazing as the summer molt of the Goldfinches. The weather is fine, the migratory birds are on their way, and yesterday I did some actual garden work. Yay, spring! Happy Sunday!
Someone has woken up from hibernation and is visiting the water often. I am happy to see how healthy this groundhog looks.
I have been impatiently waiting, but this morning, a lovely surprise happened - the first Hummingbird arrived, along with some more snow. The forecast for the rest of the week looks good, so I hope I can help this little trooper to make it.
This year, there seems to be
an abundance of Cardinals in my yard, something that I am not complaining about at all! From afar they all kind of look alike but up close, their individuality becomes more obvious. I believe these are all different birds. So similar but also so different.
Happy Easter
to those who celebrate. I always find it fascinating to see what colors and shades the Grackles come in, and this year is no difference. There is a purple type, a more blue and green type, and some with bronze tones. And like every year, there is one that stumps me with its eye colors. Very dark, unlike the adults, but also not a youngster that early in the season. That is the one in the first two photos.
I cannot believe
that April is almost here now. Temperatures are looking very nice for the coming days, as well as the migration monitors online (this is a fantastic and fascinating source: https://birdcast.info/). The backyard is still slowly revocering from winter, and there has been a nice steady activity all week. Here are a couple of the current regulars. Have a wonderful Easter weekend!
(Titmouse, Pine Siskin, Redwinged Blackbird, Downy Woodpecker)
Birds are wonderful
photo subjects for all kinds of reasons, but there are some with which I am always hoping for certain things to happen and capture. Right now, the Redwinged Blackbirds are in perfect constant near-explode mode, which results in the most hilarious but also most gorgeous photos.
Starlings are known to mimic sounds, and earlier today, this one cleared his throat and went to town. How many species can you hear?
Hello from a fresh and magical winter wonderland. I guess spring is taking a break. I kind of love it because I do not have to drive, and because snow days are always great for bird activity. Stay warm and safe out there!

My favorite season,
spring, has finally arrived. On the calendar, at least, because we are currently experiencing a fun mix of wind, snow and sunshine. I know it is all part of the seasonal adjustment, and just knowing that there will probably not be another week-long deep frost makes my heart sing. The birds are staying close to food and water, and yesterday, this beauty’s hair was tussled in the breeze. I think the groundhog went back for some more napping though.
