I just queued this for a year
I know all the book fans are upset about season 2 but. Tbh the show is MUCH better than the book. Primarily because show!Anthony doesn't spend the entire time cornering Kate and sexually assaulting her.
But also because Kate in the book is boring. She's supposed to be this headstrong, witty, intelligent person but that's just from the way people talk about her, the way she's describes. There's not a single witty or clever line of dialogue from her in the book. Instead she's just a vaguely bland person who does nothing but get constantly violated. She barely has any agency. Show!Kate is actually witty and funny and smart, has a ton of agency and goes toe to toe with Anthony every time they meet. She's actually his equal, which is very much not their dynamic in the book. Their relationship as a whole is so much better and healthier and more romantic in the show.
Also the whole Edwina/Mr. Bagwell story was boring and just an easy out to give everyone a happy ending and avoid a love triangle. I am so glad they did away with this in the show, and this is speaking as someone who hates love triangles normally. But the way the show approached it really delved into the relationship between the sisters and complicated it, which makes for a better story.
The only part from the book I wish had actually made it into the show is Anthony's struggle with his own mortality, but I wasn't mad that they replaced it with his struggle with being forced into the father/man of the house role without being allowed to grieve his dad. I thought it was just as powerful tbh.

It’s hard for Lily to understand how the man who sits next to her, holding her hand so firmly, can possibly be torn up on the inside because he is pure ambition on the outside. James is only twenty years old and still has his whole life ahead of him; a life with Lily that only just started when they got married in the courthouse on Market Street. He couldn’t be dying, that was fucked up. What kind of God allowed someone as pure as James to get sick?
Lily suddenly wanted nothing more than to go back to the night before they received the news, when they were dancing under the lights of their living room. Now she’ still in her coat, her red hair tangled in the buttons. James has The Beatles on repeat, she couldn’t tell him that she was scared. She’s unsure of how to move forward from the nightmare she’d been presented with.
“Are you frightened?” she murmurs to him later that night.
“Not as long as you stay by my side.”
He smiles goofily at her, winking in his charming way.
She promises sweetly, “until the very end.”
He’d gone to the doctor in question after he broke his arm easily on a football scrimmage. Before the arm, he’d been struggling to stay energized, and he was drinking close to ten cups of coffee a day. Lily had been worried he was over working himself. He complained of feeling weakened after a trip to the shore. Finally, the doctors had figured out what was wrong.
Cancer had taken over his bones and it was destroying him from the inside out.
It’s not in James’ eyes; the worry only presents itself in the test results. Her fingers trace the ink on the paper and her mind memorizes the fatigued expression on his face. Lily’s hand drops the paper and it falls on the table so she can wrap her arms around James’ shoulders without restriction. He pulls her in appreciatively, kissing her temple softly.
“It’ll be fine,” he gives her promises he can’t keep, “I’ll get through the chemo then we can go back to normal and have a family.”
At first, James seems to be telling the truth. He refuses to quit his job at the local football field and he keeps running every morning before she gets up. He makes her dinners on Saturdays and kisses her frowns into smiles on Sundays. She jokes as he goes through his pill bottles every night before bed.
“Holy orange bottles,” she kisses his chin as he chuckles under her touch, “did you get more this week?”
“Doc gave me one to help with the pain.”
“I’m sorry,” she whispers.
He promises her, “soon, I’ll be better.”

If you point out that mass produced vegetable crops destroy land and flood the ecosystem with poison you’ll always have someone saying that an omnivorous diet is still ostensibly worse because “most corn is grown to feed cows,” and on a related note, there’s still a popular narrative that cattle are responsible for more climate change than anything else. But here’s the thing: Cows are not supposed to eat corn. They can’t digest it. Feeding corn to cows actually makes them produce abnormal amounts of methane to begin with, and we do not at all need to feed corn to cows either. We actually just over-produce corn so badly that it gets used as animal feed just so the corn lobby can dispose of it all at a profit.
This land used to sustain buffalo as far as the eye could see, far more biomass than all of America’s cattle put together. Buffalo ate nothing but grass and wildflowers and all the shit we now consider “weeds” and poison to death. Nobody had to feed them corn for them to exist and the environment only thrived in their presence. Most of the carbon they produced was sponged up by the healthy meadows and wetlands and old growth forests we’ve since turned into the fucking cornfields, artificial toxic lawns or just big grey valleys of dust.
There are so many things wrong here interconnected so many ways I couldn’t even keep this on the track of “stop feeding corn to cows” we just built our whole American society like the biggest fucking idiots we possibly could

“Hello. I’m here for the Ainsworth fitting?”
The clerk smiled widely at her. “Wonderful! Welcome. Let me grab you a glass of champagne, and I’ll show you to the private room.”
Lily raised an eyebrow at the clerk. “They got a private room?”
“Yes, Muffy Ainsworth has requested priority treatment, which includes the private room and champagne for all her guests.”
Lily accepted the glass of champagne from the clerk with a word of thanks, and followed her back to the private room. The clerk opened the door and announced Lily.
Lily looked in the room, finding all eyes on her, and not a smile to be found. She swallowed her nerves and walked in with a smile. Muffy scoffed at her, placing her hands on her hips.
“Lily, you’re late.”
Lily looked up at her in confusion. “You said eleven -”
“No, sweetie. The appointment was at ten for bridesmaids, and eleven for my dress. You must have misunderstood.”
Lily was certain that she hadn’t heard anything about ten, and considering Muffy texted her the details, she was tempted to pull out her phone to prove her wrong. However, Lily was trying to be supportive, so she let the matter drop.

He frowned, tense. ‘She will go back to Gryffindor?’
‘I think so but—there is something you should know.' Remus took a deep breath. ‘She is engaged.'
‘What?!’
‘It seems the Gryffindor king promised her hand to some lordling in Slytherin, I didn’t understand the details.'
‘Well…’ James blinked, lowering his eyes, and his rage was suddenly gone. ‘This is… well—she deserves—that’s good for her.'
‘What?’ Remus asked incredulously. ‘I thought you would be mad about it.'
James kicked a stone on the ground, looking as desolate as Lily had looked after her meeting. ‘I can’t be, Moony. I’ve made my choices and she deserves someone who will make her happy.'
Couldn’t that be you?, Remus thought critically, but what he said was: ‘It doesn’t seem as if this marriage will make her happy. She doesn’t want to be married.'
‘Oh.' James looked back at him, his eyes widened in surprise, a flash of uncontained hope shining on his face. ‘She said she was running away from a marriage—do you think she might actually be?’
‘Dunno. You are the one who knows her better.’
That brought a smile to his lips. ‘I do not think anyone would ever make Lily do something she doesn’t want to.’
‘See? Then maybe there is a chance. Go talk to her, James.’
