Every single cop show is like oh look how these cool badass protags just wanna do their job but the obnoxious pencil-pushers back at the office keep getting in the way by trying to make them follow due conduct and the very obvious criminal keeps maliciously obstructing them by invoking their legal rights and wouldn't they be able to do their job so much better and faster if they were allowed to just follow their gut and do whatever it takes to arrest the person they already pinned down as the dangerous criminal? And then people eat it up and go on the internet to make youtube comments about how refusing to speak with the cops without a lawyer is extremely suspicious behavior.

i wish b99 never became wildly popular because everytime something becomes popular on this website it’s like there some problematic aspect to it that prevents us, the viewers, from watching it based on our morals. it’s gotten to the point where i’m like “k fine it’s bad to show cops as good people” but i’m still gonna watch it because this is the one (1) show that actually portrays a diverse cast accurately. i don’t need to stop watching a show because there’s problematic aspects. every fucking thing in the fucking world created by humans is problematic because every fucking human is problematic. this whole purity thing that these people are positing doesn’t exist, and i should mention that EVERYONE is at least vaguely is systematically racist OR systematically sexist OR systematically homophobic, because no matter how nice or liberal minded you are, you’re still gonna partake in that shit at least minimally. i’m white, and i try to remain liberal minded and recognize the shit that PoC people have to go through on the daily, but like i still slip up and I try to make up for that.

Now by no means do I think B99 is perfect, but i think it’s one of very VERY few shows that tries to maintain its integrity by giving a diverse cast important roles with accurate portrayals. Does that mean it’s perfect? no. i think i’m finally understanding that it’s not a great idea to portray cops in a good way. but like. i’m still gonna watch it because i have a healthy understanding between fiction and reality, but my experience isn’t universal, and therefore people will not make that connection when watching b99.

But regardless, I think it’s important to merit people who are calling b99 ‘propaganda’ because while it isn’t at the overt level of big brother-esque propaganda, the simple fact that any cops are portrayed as good (when a lot of good people when exposed to the many MANY faults of the NYPD or any police department would have left it, and remaining in it exposes urself to corruption) is not…. good. And honestly? People interpret works of art differently, so to say “oh well the fanbase knows that cops aren’t really like this” is kinda bullshit. the whole shit i said “oh well only overt signs of propaganda is propaganda” and my examples were kind of ignorant esp considering my area of study. Propaganda can be overt but it can be subtle as well. While I don’t think we should stop watching the show I think we should be aware of the content we consume.
