Why is there not a vote option for "battlefield"

I just had a discussion with my friend about fanfiction and how we tend to assume that women are the writers without any actual proof. Then I said, hey, I know fanfiction written by gay and trans dudes. But then I remembered, wait, I think I know one writer who just must be cis het based on his work. Anyway, all writers, be honest, who are you?

Please reblog if you're interested in the results.

that blog is a little bit of chaotic tumblr magic i built for april fools a long time ago.

i consider this a sort of spell circle tbh

The union busting firms are scared

As a fine dining cook, I found work in a union workplace around a year ago. My 40 hours a week are guaranteed except for Jan/feb/mar when there’s not enough customers, I get paid almost twice what I did at any other restaurant, if I work overtime, (more than 8 hours in one day, or more than 40 in a week), I actually get overtime pay, (and it’s 1.5x my normal rate!). I get holiday pay, and in addition I get to either bank or pay out my holidays if I work those days, (either a paid day off when I want it, in addition to the holiday pay, or I get paid an add’l 8 hours at 1.5x that week). I also get two floating holidays, 4 paid random sick days, 2 paid family sick days, and 4 paid “doctor’s note” sick days, (paid out by our health insurance), as well as general allowance to take as many unpaid sick days as I want without worrying for my job security. (I’ve been told that taking multiple months off is where we start to be concerned about abuse, so if I want to do that, I can go through our leave of absence procedures instead, where I’m allowed three 2-week periods a year generally for whatever reason I want, (If my manager wants to disagree, he has to get the union president’s approval), and after that it’s up to my manager to decide if he’ll accept them). I get two weeks of paid vacation time a year, and an add’l week per year for every 5 years I work there. We get our legally mandated breaks, which, I know that sounds like a low bar, but taking anything other than a smoke break in a kitchen?!?! Unheard of! I get two 15′s and a lunch every shift! I get to sitdown and rest my legs and not get flak for it! I get a bonus at the end of the year, there’s official procedures for if my manager isn’t happy with me or wants to get rid of me, (three meetings, during which my union representative has to be present), (and getting rid of my classification doesn’t work, there’s rules for how someone ‘bumps’ other people if classifications are gotten rid of), and severance pay for when full-time employees that are downsized out of the company, there’s a pension plan, like . . . Guys, I have a 40-page handbook which details all of the rights my union has won me, and believe me, I’ve never had any of these at any prior workplace. And you know what my union dues are? $4 a paycheck. Of course I’m going to pay my union dues for all of those benefits.

Reblogging for this incredibly thorough explanation of what it's like to actually have a contract in place at a union workplace. I reblog a fair number of posts about how people should organize, but if you're like me, you might not know exactly what that can get you until you've actually gone through the process. Every contract is different because you bargain for what makes sense for your particular workplace, and every few years you re-negotiate with the employer to improve things in the next contract, but some things (like the right to have union representation when you talk to your boss about leave or discipline) are universal.

It's worth every penny of your dues, I promise.

Anonymous asked:

gahh, are there any big recent good news stories❔everything i can find seems so . small. which is ok and good but gahhhhhhhhh mental health explode my brain aaaaa

Oh yeah, 100%

Do your mental health a favor and read some of this. It's a giant compilation of good news newsletters that is very good at finding big stories and has a very large-scale and international focus: https://futurecrunch.com/goodnews/

Future Crunch's top story from two weeks ago, for example:

"Humanity has made astonishing progress on access to water, sanitation and hygiene in this century. Between 2000 and 2022, 2.1 billion people gained access to safe drinking water, 2.5 billion gained access to safely managed sanitation, the number of people using unimproved facilities has been halved, from 1.1 billion to 545 million, and the number practising open defecation has fallen by more than two thirds, from 1.3 billion to 419 million. The EU is doing a big survey for LGBTQ people who live in the EU about how it is for them right now. That's the kind of survey that's used for official reports and for laws so it's super important that it has as many people taking it as possible. You can take it in every EU language. (You can change the language in the top right corner) Share it with your friends!

My dad told me a Queen Elizabeth x 9/11 combo joke but idk if it works in English

Avatar

It goes something like this

Q: Why can’t Americans play chess against the British anymore?

A: Because the British are missing the queen and the Americans are missing two towers (rooks).

Avatar

To whoever unfollowed me for this: I didn’t even come up with the joke myself, you should unfollow my dad instead.

As a part of the Chess Fandom™️ and also from a colonized country, this was the first image I saw the day the Queen died on my whatsapp chess club group:

So yeah, that’s how the news broke to me.

an incredible update to this post

Friendly reminder

If you mean "In America" please say, in America. *"Here's a list of free resources or helplines for ..." if you mean in America, say in America. *"Now it's nearly x-holiday, we're all going to have to deal with y again..." if you mean in America, say in America. * "Everyone who's afflicted by [common modern problem afflicting billions worldwide] is entitled to compensation..." if you mean in America, say in America * "If you haven't already called your senator about this, you're a bad person... " Cut that out anyway, but if you mean in America, say in America. If you'd like international help/attention for whatever the problem is, figure out how people can give it.

If you're on the internet, you're in an international space. Always. Your country isn't the world, and when you loudly make it clear you view American and Person as interchangeable synonyms, you're being rude. All the rest of us routinely specify the country we're talking about already.

you're all joking about not wearing earplugs to concerts, right? we're not out here rawdogging 120dB. right.

Avatar

to be clear i'm not trying to be moralizing or anything it's just important to me that people at least know they should be protecting their ears at concerts and clubs. repeated exposure to loud enough music will lead to hearing loss. you will get tinnitus. you don't want tinnitus.

Avatar

[garfield meme edited to read “you are not immune to hearing loss”]

Avatar

I understand tinnitus can sound really vague and inconsequential to someone who hasn't experienced it, I really get where everyone making jokes about it in the notes is coming from. that said:

  • tinnitus can be extremely debilitating. mine still sometimes keeps me awake for hours at night, despite having gotten better over the years. it can make it difficult to concentrate on anything else.
  • the more you are exposed to loud sounds, the higher the chance of getting tinnitus, and the worse it will get. even if you already have it, or already have hearing loss, you should be wearing protection in places like concerts and clubs.
  • you can have both hearing loss and tinnitus.
  • there are many ways to find relief for tinnitus, and it may fade on its own, especially if you take care of your ears, but there is no known cure.

If you've never had it, I really recommend looking up videos of what tinnitus sounds like, and just imagine that, always. or go through the tags and read through what people have said about their tinnitus. wear earplugs!!!

okay but the BEST part of the first study discussed (conducted by an autistic person!) Is that it shows that while easy, calm, mutual communication and social interaction is often more natural between two autistic people than it is between an autistic person and a non-autistic person, it is ALSO like this when an autistic person encounters a non-autistic person who imitates the autistic individual’s behaviours- neurotypical parents copying autistic children’s play, for example, apparently receive more positive engagement from their child- which is SERIOUSLY FUCKING IMPORTANT and VERY VERY GOOD because it is, once again, scientific evidence that bullshit like aversion therapy and enforced conformance and FUCKING “quiet hands” aren’t “”“”“solutions to the autism problem”“”“” and that “”“”“problems”“”“ with autism don’t stem from BEING autistic, but rather, from how NON AUSTISTIC PEOPLE TREAT AUTISTIC PEOPLE.

IE, once again, there is nothing bad or wrong about being autistic

A circus is a carefully curated illusion of outlandish chaos, a finely-tuned masterpiece of performance art, constructed of the team effort of a crew of highly trained professional artists who work together like a clockwork, driven by their passion for their craft and mutual trust for each others' skill and performance. In this retrospect, sir, I believe I will take back my words. It was wrong of me to describe your establishment as "a fucking circus". As a matter of fact, I should say that what you're running here is the opposite of a circus.

A barely functioning haphazard illusion of order and productivity, cobbled together and kept running by a motley crew of untrained amateurs and checked-out professionals who have given up any attempt to improve the situation, having had all their previous attempts either inadvertedly obstructed, or actively prohibited by yourself. Surely a well-trained team of professional clowns could run this place more efficiently than you do.

so embarrassing when i forget im checking someone's blog and i start scrolling through and liking and reblogging shit as if it's just my dash. it feels like wandering into someone else's apartment and not noticing and making myself lunch

reblog if i can wander into your apartment (blog) and make myself lunch (like and reblog as if it's my dash)

grabbing new writers by the shoulders. it is important to write what you love and to love what you write. if you spend all your time trying to make something other people will approve of you will hate yourself and everything around you. learn at your own pace. you have time. i’m proud of you

I must not buy. Buying is the purse-killer. Buying is the little-dopamine that brings total bankruptcy. I will face my wishlist. I will permit the limited time sale to pass over me and through me. And when it has expired I will turn the inner eye to see its impulses. When the mania has gone there will be nothing. Only $ will remain.

I can’t begin to express the difference it makes just that I’m able to wear exclusively t-shirts, baggy shorts, and flip-flops. And the thing is, right. What you notice is that I’m wearing something slightly odd for the weather. What you don’t notice is that I’m not curled up with my hands clamped over my ears because socks make the clinking plates in the restaurant too loud.

a few years ago, i made a flowchart for my partner in order to convince them to leave a pathfinder group that was actively making their life worse. today i revised my original chart to convince a friend to leave her d&d group that is actively making her life worse.

here is the chart. i promise its utility is not only with tabletop RPGs but it does have a high hit rate for those

I feel this has wider application
