Classic Ads: Centipede

Centipede is a vertically-oriented shoot ‘em up arcade game produced by Atari in 1981. The game was designed by Ed Logg along with Dona Bailey, one of the few female game programmers in the industry at this time. The player moves the character about the bottom area of the screen with a trackball and fires laser shots at a centipede advancing from the top of the screen down through a field of mushrooms. Your introduction to VHS and Beta, 1977.

Two and a half pages of information about these strange new machines which allow you to record television programs and even your own home movies. Notice that the final acronym VTR for “videotape recorders” didn’t catch on – we wound up with VCR for “videocassette recorder” instead – and the unmentioned-herein acronym “VHS” for Video Home System became so predominant that you probably never knew what “VHS” stood for.

With a quick reference to Videodisc as a nonrecordable medium.
