Forever Drawing

@ongoingart / ongoingart.tumblr.com

The art blog of R E Wilkinson aka thedreadvampy. My past work includes album artwork for the Mechanisms and Kofi Young, as well as design for several UK NGOs. Every time I stop drawing, you get a photo of my work. Send me an ask to negotiate commission work.

forgot to post this - did a bit of sketching at the bar earlier this week when I was waiting for my partner ☺️

It's been. a long time since I found an excuse to paint for fun (cause it's kind of a space and resource sponge) but I'm working on the first of what will hopefully be a pair of paintings of my partner pre- and post- top surgery.

it's probably bedtime so idk, hopefully I will wrap up tomorrow before I go back to work but if not 🤷‍♀️ it's for my own amusement

This project is really good, both because I think it's a really valuable piece of work to exist (I'm partnering on a workbook to help people find paths to justice after abuse, particularly focusing on options outside/alongside the criminal system) but also, in a less political and more artistic way, it's giving me a lot of chances to play with character design, since I've been asked to put a range of 'types' of people into this project that reflects the range of people who are using the services.

(this isn't embargoed, but I am trying to avoid sharing swathes of it out of context so I haven't been posting most of what I've produced. Hopefully we'll have a final draft together in the next couple of months and once it's out for the service I'll share it here too)

Playing around with some clay. I don't sculpt much but for some reason this week I had the urge.

Went to Pilsen with my partner so they could get tattooed. I didn't have enough Czech (any) to join in most of the chat so I sat in the corner and sketched like a creeper ☺️

sketchin but I think this pose might be a bit too melodramatic for the project

Jill Murphy died this week 😭 absolute legend that she was

I was reminiscing with my mum about the Worst Witch, which was like one of my absolute favourites when I was 7 or 8 and also a catastrophically loud, messy and awkward girl who perpetually looked like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards. Mildred Hubble was my absolute icon when I was little (and was I a little gay for Enid? Absolutely)

idk these books meant a lot to me. here's a Mildred.

[ID: A sketch of a preeteen girl in an old fashioned school uniform sitting crosslegged, leaning on one elbow. Her tie is loose and her boots are untied. She has scruffy pigtails brushing the floor, and a tabby kitten is pawing at the end of one. She smiles sidelong at the cat.]

Brother Faulkner. I have Feelings about him, which boils down to PROTECT PROTECT PROTECT.

[ID: Two copies of the same drawing on brown paper, one in brush pen and one coloured with coloured pencil. It shows a thin light-skinned Black teenager with deepset hazel eyes, curly brown hair and a full mouth set in a slight sneer. He has an expression of faraway determination. His ear is pierced with a fishhook and he is wearing a blue waterproof coat]

hey I've been listening to the silt verses I'm loev.....Carpenter.......

[ID: two images of the same drawing, the first inked and coloured, the second the underlying pencil sketch. It is a portrait on brown paper of a white woman in her 50s with greying, curly dark hair tied back in a ponytail. She has a round face, a sceptical expression, and she is wearing a green waterproof coat and fleece.]

Culture week for @melaniemonth (only...two weeks late.....)! I think food is one of the strongest possible links to culture, whatever your background is. I headcanon Melanie having learnt to cook from her dad, and she grows her own chillies and tomatoes in her flat.

[ID: a digital painting of a South Indian woman cooking in a small cluttered kitchen, viewed through the frame of a door. The kitchen is flooded with golden sunlight, and there are fruiting cherry tomato and chilli plants on the windowsill above the sink.

Melanie is sprinkling turmeric into a pan of curry, and beside her are jars and bags of spices. She is short and muscular with freckled mid-brown skin and a tattoo in Gujarati on her ribs reading બહાદુર હોવું. She is wearing a blue crop top and a loose yellow jumpsuit embroidered with red flowers. She has rings in her eyebrow and nose, several ear piercings and a large cutout earring reading NO! Her hair is jaw-length, fluffy and dyed blue-green at the ends, tied into a half-ponytail. Her missing eye shows pink under her eyelid. She is smiling contentedly as she works.

In the foreground, past the doorframe, two framed pictures are visible in the shadows. One is a small framed postcard of the Goddess Kali holding a trident and curved sword; the other is a large framed photo of a teenaged Melanie with chest-length straightened black hair wearing a pink sari, with her arm around her dad, a fat middle-aged man with a white moustache in a silver kurta and reddish-purple scarf. The kitchen and doorframe suggest a small cheapish London flat.]

the unbearable hubris of opening a photoshop document at 10pm. goodnight.

[ID: a screencap of a Photoshop window with a half-finished digital painting titled “Melanie kitchen 210502 0145″, showing a mostly-rendered small sunlit kitchen viewed through the blocked-in shape of a doorway. A short Indian woman with dyed blue hair and yellow dungarees is sprinkling spices into a pan of food on the hob.]

(this is where it was when I opened it at Around Winding Down Time which was. four hours ago.)

[ID: another photoshop screencap, this time of a document called “Melanie kitchen 210501 0224. The image is the same as above, but only the woman’s figure is painted and rendered; the background and foreground are sketchy line drawings on a flat yellow-white background]
