As youth liberation becomes more and more central to my politics as a whole, I've been trying to expunge terms like "childish", "immature" etc. from my vocabulary. Children are perhaps more dehumanized than any other category of people on the planet, and the primary mechanism of this is the way that the concept of "growing up" is moralized. I think most children know, in some sense, that they are being oppressed, being traumatized, that what is happening to them is deeply, deeply fucked up, so they must be told that their complaints are not legitimate, that they'll understand when they're older or some such nonsense. The subtext here is, of course, "Well, you're less of a person than I (an adult) am, so that means your pain doesn't actually matter." To think otherwise would be to acknowledge that yes, you're right, the world is deeply cruel and unfair; yes, you're right, school is a prison and you're being tortured there; yes, you're right, it's awful that you have no autonomy or rights whatsoever and are basically completely at the mercy of an arbitrary set of adults with total power over you. And if we acknowledge these things then, well, society would just start to completely unravel, wouldn't it? That's why to say that someone's concerns are "childish" is essentially telling them that they're a failure of a person, that they didn't do the necessary growing up to sit down and shut up and become a good little functioning cog. Think of how often radicals are compared to children ("anarkiddies", anyone?) This is not an accident.
