hey you, blogger. do you find yourself in incredible pain daily? even weekly? despite being in your 30s, or younger? despite doing everything that's ""supposed"" to help?

Then, hi, you might possibly have something called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, or EDS; specifically the hypermobile subtype (hEDS), which doesn’t yet have a known genetic marker and goes wildly underdiagnosed in patients, partly because the things they test for hypermobility are pretty limited, partly because doctors don’t know what it is, partly because doctors would rather diagnose you with a different condition (if arthritis or fibromyalgia diagnoses/treatment didn’t help, well...!) because if it sounds like a horse it’s PROBABLY a horse (but it could be a zebra)

Of course having any one of these does not an hEDS diagnosis make, but if you have multiple on my above list? Multiple of the list I am including below the cut? It’s worth looking into. This is a fantastic resource list, but it's missing both one thing I've seen as a defining marker of EDS, one minor symptom, and one thing I've heard is extremely commonly comorbid.

Do you have wounds that heal extremely slowly in comparison to other people, and/or are you super prone to mystery bruises? Because EDS is a connective tissue disorder, it strongly affects blood vessels and blood vessel repair. People with EDS tend to just have weaker blood vessels, which means they burst at less pressure than it takes for non-EDS people to bruise. And everything heals slower because connective tissue is what knits you back together.

Disregard your family's rate of healing because of the genetic factor and ask your friends how long it takes them to heal from little scrapes and the like. If the answers you get are "wow that's way less time than it takes me to heal from a papercut," you might have EDS! (Or another connective tissue disorder, which you should probably get shit checked out either way.) Similarly, if you get visible bruising from things like "I knocked my hip into the wall turning a corner at walking speed" or "I scratched myself too hard," you should also get checked out. That's not normal.

POC-specific: If you are lighter-skinned than expected for your ethnicity, you may have EDS. This is purely anecdotal because (as usual!) there's very little data on EDS in non-white people, so do take it with a grain of salt. That said, particularly pale skin is a marker of EDS even in white people.

And do you not get relief from pain medication? There isn't a known genetic marker for EDS yet, but there ARE genetic conditions that cause people to not get pain relief from either narcotics or otc pain medication. And these conditions are extremely commonly comorbid with EDS. (As in, to the point that anecdotally I was talking to someone who researches EDS about my immunity to OTC pain meds, and they congratulated me on my new EDS diagnosis before I clarified that I have none of the symptoms of EDS.) So if either class of pain meds is something you might as well not even bother with, that can also be an indicator.

Disclaimer: As I noted, I don't have EDS (my ex does and that's where I got a lot of the information from), but I hope that this can also serve to give a heads-up to people, especially those who don't fit into the hypermobile category.

Seriously just a bit of pollen could make your cat sick within a matter of minutes. Stay far away from Easter lilies if you have kitties!

Lilies, including the pollen, are FATAL to cats!

It’s nearing that time again. Remember, if you have a cat, don’t bring Easter lillies, or any in the same family, into your home!

Of all the plants people claim to be toxic to cats, this is THE plant to watch out for.

Poinsettias? potentially irritating sap, would need excessive doses to be toxic. Pothos? mildly irritating crystals in the leaves. Lilies? Organ failure.

Specifically, plants in the genus Lilium (Easter, Oriental, Tiger, Stargazer, etc etc) are the bad ones. Lily is a common name shared among a lot of different plants, some more or less toxic, but it’s the Liliums that are documented to be deadly to cats, specifically in causing kidney failure.

Amaryllis and Daffodils are other lily relatives that can be toxic, though not to the same level.

Daylilies (Hemerocalis) are unrelated plants but often listed as toxic (I’ve seen some debates from daylily people as to how true this is but better safe than sorry).

Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) is not actually a lily but is very toxic to humans as well as animals, though for different reasons than Liliums, causing cardiac issues.

Peace Lilies (Spathiphyllum) are also unrelated and closer in the level of toxicity as a pothos, containing mildly irritating crystals but not deadly

Azalea/Rhododendrons are also a potential spring bloomer I would look out for, especially as I’ve seen a rise in popularity of the forced florist type azaleas this spring as an indoor pot plant. Ingestion can cause organ failure.

Vet tech here, this is all true. Do not bring lilies into your house this season if you have cats. Even if they’re ‘in a room where the cat doesn’t go’ or ‘the cat can’t reach it’. You want to know what owners tell me when they bring their cats in for lily ingestion treatment? The flowers were ‘in a room where the cat doesn’t go, but I went in there and then the phone rang so I left to get it, I only left the door open a minute’, and ‘they were up on top of the fridge where the cat can’t get, but it dropped some leaves.’ Just don’t risk it.

Headwear called cofia

You might have read that Catherine of Aragon arrived in England, wearing italian hat/headwear. However, friend of mine pointed out it is possible somebody confused it, with spanish headwear which was extremely similiar. You be the judge:

On left Italian headwear, on right spanish. Both called cofia.

How many movies and tv shows are there with Queen Catherine wearing italian dress and headwear, and yet never it is the headwear which resembles closely that of her homeland. It’s always some ridiculously huge headwear.

Note:I found out that people who originally discribed Catherine’s headwear as italian in first place were Venetians, it is likely that they considered the headwear italian. Idk if originally headwear started in Italy or Spain, but by Catherine’s lifetime cofia had both italian and spanish subtypes. 

There are some notable difference between these two subptypes. Italian usually had the half traluscent/netted upper part, while Spanish had it non-traluscent, usually from white linen. 

There were exceptions, Italian examples of non-traluscent cofia:

I think that was probably due to royals of Naples being branch of house of Trastamara(Aragon royal family), themselves being influenced towards Iberian style, and some people around them could wear it that way too.)

Or perhaps we could say Italian cofias could be traluscent(netted) and non-traluscent, while Spanish appears to have been strictly non-traluscent. 

Term cofia means cap and I am surprised with how few people even know it existed. It was as important as henin, gable hood, french hood and other well-known headwear. Very prominent in Spain and in some parts of Italy.

I blame way potraits in 15th and 16th century are painted for it being ‘missed’.

Also, the part wrapped in fabric around hair wasn’t always there, just the cap.

(That was also refered to as cofia, at least in Italy, and though barely visible nowadays it is on Mona Lisa!)

I call that part wrapped around hair cloth braid(because it reminds you of braid, and in spanish I keep finding term cofia de tranzado(braided cap) as term for entire headwear(cap and cloth braid) and cap itself doesn’t remind you of braid, so perhaps tranzado is what i call cloth braid.) 

On other hand in Spain, sometimes just the cloth braid was worn without cofia. And I have no idea how to call it then-just tranzado?

I just know young Isabella and her daughters often wore hair that way.

Everyone who still has fond memories of watching PBS programming as a kid can attest to the impact and benefit of well funded public broadcasting. You also probably grew up hearing the constant endless phone banking about how Public Broadcasting is Made Possible With the Support of Viewers Like You. Thing is, you are not too young to support PBS anymore. You are the adults, adults who in this age of streamers making television access so expensive, have the power to toss some money in the direction of public television.
