"We are disciplined, so we lie here and take it, because, in the end, we are more afraid of defying the authority of an officer, backed up by the whole Army and a court-martial composed of officers like him, than we are of death by shell fire. Discipline is fear, not leadership, and we are afraid--not of Peacock but of the irresistible force that he represents. Afraid for our lives, we are more afraid of the system that holds us in thrall, and so we lie here and wait to be killed, because an officer tells us to lie here."

- David Kenyon Webster, Parachute Infantry: An American Paratrooper's Memoir of D-Day and the Fall of the Third Reich

one of the biggest things I can advocate for (in academia, but also just in life) is to build credibility with yourself. It’s easy to fall into the habit of thinking of yourself as someone who does things last minute or who struggles to start tasks. people will tell you that you just need to build different habits, but I know for me at least the idea of ‘habit’ is sort of abstract and dehumanizing. Credibility is more like ‘I’ve done this before, so I know I can do it, and more importantly I trust myself to do it’. you set an assignment goal for the day and you meet it, and then you feel stronger setting one the next day. You establish a relationship with yourself that’s built on confidence and trust. That in turn starts to erode the barrier of insecurity and perfectionism and makes it easier to start and finish tasks. reframing the narrative as a process of building credibility makes it easier to celebrate each step and recognize how strong your relationship with yourself can become

paul and alia atreides

Such a rich store of myths enfolds Paul Muad'dib, the Mentat Emperor, and his sister, Alia, it is difficult to see the real persons behind these veils. But there were, after all, a man born Paul Atreides and a woman born Alia. Their flesh was subject to space and time.

A Storm of Swords Illustrations by Petri Hiltunen, for the Finnish hardcover edition

Illustrations for the Finnish hardcover edition of A Storm of Swords (Miekkamyrsky, 2005-2006) by Finnish comics artist, writer and illustrator Petri Hiltunen

Scanned by me. Feel free to share elsewhere but please credit the artist (Petri Hiltunen) and myself for the scans (Saera, @saintarmand on Tumblr and @saera7a on Twitter), preferably with a link back to this post. It did take time! I'm planning on scanning the art from the other books as well but it may take some time since they're not all currently available at my local library.

Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero & Rafael Federman as THE STRAUCH COUSINS Adolfo 'Fito' Strauch, Daniel Fernández & Eduardo Strauch in LA SOCIEDAD DE LA NIEVE / SOCIETY OF THE SNOW (2023)

Los primos Strauch se encargan del trabajo más doloroso. El que nadie quiere hacer. Fito es quien elige los cuerpos que los tres cortan a escondidas, apartados de la mirada del resto. Así logran contener la locura de los que comen. The Strauch cousins handle the most painful job. The one no one wants to do. Fito chooses the bodies that the three cut up. Out of sight. Where the rest of us can't see. So that they keep the ones who eat from losing their minds.
