Resmaa Menakem, My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies
Had Padmé been 20-30 years older than anakin instead of 2-3 it wouldve fixed a significant portion of the franchise, including padmé's own chracterization
he whole "'woah we're doing something we shouldn't this is going to ruin both of our lives" doesn't ring true in the original movies cause they're just two beautiful young people doing what they're supposed to do in a story. the cliché kills the dramatic tension. give me a 45 year old woman ruining her career life and reputation because a dumbass 19year old monk is pathetically throwing himself at her feet THAT'll give the audience something to be anxious about. It's not something people expect to happen.
Would also explain why all the authority figures are like "Sure, lets put this notoriously disobedient and hotheaded beautiful youth as the sole escort of an equally beautiful young woman who's had the entire world on her shoulders from childhood. no prophecy twins will result from this". i could see obiwan allowing it because he can't deny anakin anything, but what about the rest of the jedi council??? What about padmé's own people? The choice of anakin as bodyguard looks like bad optics even if nothing actually happens. What about her reputation??? It would've been satisfying if they'd actually leaned into it instead of vague hints. Like padmé says its improper but nothing in the surrounding world actually makes it seem that way. The prequels at least didn't do a good job establishing the jedi as sexless and chaste. They just seem like cool hot guys with swords of COURSE they fuck.
but if she's 45, even if she's beautiful, a lifetime of dutiful service to the republic would make most people go "ah she would never sleep with a teenage monk, doesn't matter if he asks". Plus the general social standards of star wars being actually identical to those of our own society they'll probably be like "well what would a 19year old even want with a middle aged woman?" the thought wouldn't even occur. She'd be desexualized by virtue of her age so of course give her a hot young bodyguard no one (including the audience) is gonna see potential for impropriety
AND NOW WE COME TO ROTS. Its not impossible for a 45 year old woman ti get pregnant (average menopause is 50 i assume also in space until proven otherwise) but it is rarer, and it would make sense of anidala not to have been expecting it. It would also underline, again, that this pregnancy is a genuine threat to their lives and careers, because two young people in love secretly married having a baby is literally fine. its normal. the audience will forgive and even applaud even if the wider society in the movie doesn't. but a 45 year old senator with a secret baby?? that she's KEEPING?? like already in the original she shouldn't have kept the baby but the movie is christian and the audience too the vibe is "noo pregnancy is beautiful its luke and leia awww". We should be SCARED about the pregnancy.
And then, anakin having nightmares about padmé dying in childbirth are no longer obvious prophecies. like young padmé is healthy and rich, she'll have the best medical care theres no reason to think her pregnancy will have complications. It's actually kind of stupid and dismissive for people to say anakin's nightmares are nothing to worry about, especially considering he's had them before! but if padmé is pregnant at 45 the risk of complications is very high even with good medical care, and it would make sense for anakin to just have regular nightmares about it. The pregnancy is not a good thing! its a big risk they're taking in a lot of ways!
It also complicates the "unavoidable fate" thing they did in rots. Like in the original had anakin not tried to do everything to prevent padmé dying in childbirth she actually wouldve been fine. She died of grief while fully healthy which i think everyone can agree was fucking stupid. But if anakin's descent into the dark side, 100% ensured padmé dying (strangling a 45 year old woman who's already endured a huge amount of stress and throwing her to the ground? narratively speaking, either she's not making it or the baby isn't), i think it would be good if we weren't told with absolute certainty "had anakin stayed a jedi she wouldn't have died". It would be more compelling if we didn't know for sure!!
Plus it would make anakin's freakout so much easier to empathize with. Like sure its scary to think of your loved ones dying but the whole movie she's presented as obviously not at risk. Anakin worries but we don't. We should worry! Are we so much better than him? Wouldn't we also be desperate in his position? Or alternatively we refuse to sympathize with his decision to fall in love with a middle aged woman which is uncomfortable and leads us into much more complicated moral questioning than "become evil or stay good?". It would add drama either way!
And it would make both padmé and anakin so much more 3 dimensional as characters. Now they're making strange, emotionally driven and unexpected decisions instead of following the script for romantic lead 1 and 2. Padmé has actual depth and complications! She makes decisions we can't necessarily appove of, keeping the baby becomes a genuine decision with genuine cost instead of "duh, what else is she gonna do?" Her falling in love with anakin actually adds depth to her character and tells us something about who she is instead of turning her into a cliché. Replaying the trilogy in my head with older padmé instead of young padmé she immediately feels like a character with agency instead of a cardboard cutout of the ideal dead wife.
Hey, could you do me a favor?
Could you just RB this?
The little RB statistics chart is so pleasant and stimmy to look at and I want to see what it looks like when it gets really REALLY huge because it makes me think of some deep sea lifeform
here lemme help
*ahem*
reblog this post to kiss the person you reblogged it from
hope that works :)
THANK YOU THIS IS MAKING MY BRAIN SO HAPPY AAAAAAAAA
THIS IS SO SATISFYING ITS LIKE A GROUP OF PLANKTON OR A RAILWAY CHART...
Today, for the first time in an uncountable number of days, I got to add a sticker to my sticker book.
Stickers are for morning and afternoon check in if I have opened and allocated all my work emails.
I did not think it would still be a motivator after all this time, but *sticker!!* has been in the back of my head for the last week as I have worked through the backlog
I chose this one:
They’re from a sticker set I got from the scholastic book fair approximately 30 years ago
The only thing I need tumblr to do is to get like... cool with the idea you can hire people here to do commissions for you and to like.. consider monetary support for artists cuz one of the reasons and the biggest reason I moved to twitter in the first place is because people there buy my art. I make a living there doing art. And the vibe here is **we don't do that here** If you want artists to be here and do art you gotta be okay with the concept of artists trying to make money. I hate capitalism as much as the next person but I'm also 30 years old living with my fucking parents because I can't pay for a 1 bedroom apartment. Artists are not 'big business'. We're not Disney. We're just people trying to make a living or some money for groceries and shit.
...what is the "sex is just rock climbing" category
It was kind of a joke between me and a friend ("you wouldn't judge someone for having gone rock climbing with a bunch of different people") but honestly the more I thought about it the more I bought into it unironically because:
- It is a physical activity done with one or more partners
- You should only go rock climbing with people you trust not to let you fall
- You should not go rock climbing with someone who is drunk or currently incapable of rational decision-making
- Some people get super super super into rock climbing and do not shut up about all the places they have climbed and how many are left on their bucket list
and these people are usually men between the ages of 20 and 35and like it's fine dude I'm glad you're happy but I don't know what most of those mountains even are - While many consider it a fun activity, pressuring someone into climbing when they don't want to (or ignoring their feelings and just dangling them off a cliff,) could cause both psychological and physical trauma
- There is no moral value to it whatsoever. Who you have gone rock climbing with (or whether you have rock climbed at all) has no bearing on who you are as a person. Imagine telling someone "it's not that heights make you nauseous, it's just that you haven't found the right person to belay you!" or "you need to save your first time rock climbing for someone special." That would be absurd.
- historically I have not asked myself "will this aggravate my hip flexer injury" before participating when perhaps I should have 😔
My grandma had polio as a 17-year-old in 1945 and only had the use of three fingers in one hand and two in the other. My mother grew up having Hamburger Helper 3 nights a week, Tuna Helper three other nights, and spaghetti with red sauce, and started cooking at age 10 out of self-defense.
My grandmother believes that is not possible to overcook meat and that vegetables one needs teeth to eat are “disappointing”
it seems so strange to me that the only people it is socially acceptable to live with (once you reach a certain stage in life) are sexual partners? like why can’t i live with my best friend? why can’t i raise a child with them? why do i need to have sex with someone in order to live with them? why do we put certain relationships on a pedestal? why don’t we value non-sexual relationships enough? why do life partners always have to be sexual partners?
My grandmother and grandfather more or less adopted my grandmother’s best friend back in the 50s. After my grandfather died (before I was born, back in 1968 or so) they continued to keep house together, platonic best friends, and they hung together until they died, a few months apart, in 2007.
It’s quite recently, as far as I can tell, that living arrangements like that have stopped being regarded as normal.
It’s absolutely a new thing to find this stuff weird, and it has a lot to do with media pretending that the nuclear family and marriage are the only reasons to live with other people.
I’ve lived in a 3 adult household my whole life. My parents and their best friend. This was never weird to me, even though everyone my age thought it was because the media never portrayed these kinds of housing arrangements. As far as i was concerned, I just had an extra non-blood parent.
According to my parents, it was very common in the 70′s-80′s to buy houses with your friends, because it was financially smart to do so (so long as you were certain they were close friends who wouldn’t fall out with you and fuck everything up). Houses and house payments are much more manageable when you split the bills 3-4 ways instead of just two.
Millenials aren’t the first to think it’s a great idea to just shack up with friends. That’s housemating without the hastle of living with strangers. It’s still a good idea to shack up with people you’ve known a long time so you know how you’ll get on living together, but still. In the current economy, it’s pretty much now our only option for affording anything.
I think, and I’m not researched on this, but I think conservatives probably tried to suppress images of non-nuclear families because they likely thought it would encourage ideas of polygamy, polyamory, open sexual relationships with or without marriage, as well as other relationship types they thought of as un-christian or unsavoury. I could be wrong, but that shit wouldn’t surprise me.
(And i want to make a note that there’s also a disturbing amount of asexual denial around that makes people go ‘if they’re living together they HAVE to be banging because why wouldn’t they?’ and that shit both creeps me out and annoys me no end. People can be in relationships without sex. People can live together without sex. Sex is not the be-all and end-all and people being taught to think it is really need to stop).
Don’t let the media fool you into believing you can only live with a sexual partner or blood family. Someone somewhere has an agenda for making these seem abnormal, when really it’s just practical.
A lot of people acted like it was super weird when two of my brothers decided to move states with me when I started my postdoc. I got really used to giving a little canned speech about it because it seemed to bewilder people so much. (Their leases happened to be up! We could share rent! They wanted to try somewhere new!)
The notable exception was my grandma, who was just like, “oh, yes, when we were young my sister and I decided to move cross-country together and it was lovely.”
More of this kind of thing for everyone, pls.
The implication that close sibling relationships must also be a warning sign for incest also peeves me off; what kind of society are we living in anyway

Having a multi-adult household unit also just makes a shit-ton of sense, tbh. Much easier to split not only the bills, but also the housework and child-rearing responsibilities. Communal living ftw.
It’s also super a capitalism thing.
With only two working-age people in the house, it’s very difficult to make ends meet without one of them (or increasingly, these days, both of them) working away the vast majority of their waking hours to earn enough money to support the household. The other person, if they aren’t also working similar hours, is there to support that working person, full time, with unpaid labour.
The end result of this is that nobody has any time or energy to spend together properly, and they just end up tired and miserable and shackled to their work, throwing money at their problems because it’s all they can do. It’s very easy to convince tired, miserable people to spend their money in the ways you want them to, and it’s also very easy to manipulate and oppress people who don’t have the energy or the means to fight for their rights. Convince a whole nation that this is the way the world is supposed to work, and you’ll be well away.
Death to the cancerous myth of the nuclear family.
this is exactly the type of thing us aros and aces are referring to when we talk about amatonormativity
In the late 1980s, my parents bought a house with friends of theirs. The relationship did breakdown, but they had put everything on paper with a lawyer, and that protected them from super messy situation
Hey if you happen to work for a small business and you use Office 365 for anything and you are not required to use 2FA to log in to your 365 account please talk to your tech people at work and see if they have plans for adding that to your security policy.
We're rolling out 2FA for all our clients who have been hesitant about it and some of them are onboard but many are resistant to the change and it's slow going and we've had 3 customers get hit with session hijacking attacks in the last month. I just had the office manager for one of the businesses we work with call me in tears because one of her customers sent $150k to a fraudulent bank account.
And if you are someone who works in accounts payable and you are doing business to business transfers if one of your customers asks you to transfer to a new account number you need to CALL THEM ON THE PHONE to verify that they really want you to use this new account before you send that money. Asking for an email with a past invoice is NOT a good enough defense against fraud if a malicious actor has taken over your vendor's email and has access to everything they've ever sent you.
While I'm at it, here are some things that I thought were very basic security stuff that are apparently getting overlooked.
- CALL TO VERIFY CHANGES. This should be part of your normal policy. You should not accept payment changes, address changes, email changes, ownership changes, point-of-contact etc. from your vendors or customers without first getting on the phone and speaking to someone who YOU PERSONALLY have spoken to at the company in the past and confirming those changes.
- DO NOT SEND SENSITIVE INFORMATION THROUGH EMAIL. Usernames, Passwords, Credit Card Numbers, Health information, Personally Identifying information, and all Banking information is all information that you shouldn't send even through encrypted email; either you enter that info on a secure portal or you talk to someone on the phone.
- Never, ever, ever give your 2FA codes to anyone. No exceptions. If it's anyone who would legitimately need to access your system they have ways of doing it that do not require you to have access to the system.
Going insane that this keeps happening please at this point just assume that anyone asking you to wire money is lying to you.
All sound advice!
But also teach everyone to recognize phishing and be wary of entering credentials without checking. 2fa can be subverted by using evilngx2 to steal session data directly.
Please correct me if I‘m wrong but why implement 2FA if the lack thereof never was the problem to begin with and almost every case of "hacking" merely being people falling for phishing and social engineering in general? OP really makes it sound like that 2FA is providing a false sense of security to customers by adding an abstraction layer the average smart device user hardly understands and misinterprets as "providing protection against bad actors pretending to be someone else".
I would say that every layer helps. I mean, having 2FA at least prevents most of the attacks, as well as being a good defense against password reuse (you know, user1234@xyzzy having the same password in multiple places; password being stolen from site 1 and being used against site 2, that kind of thing).
And it partly works even against phishing, the nginx2 attack is not that wide-spread (yet!), and there are some mitigation measures even against that.
why implement 2FA if the lack thereof never was the problem to begin with and almost every case of "hacking" merely being people falling for phishing and social engineering in general?
2FA is actually really effective against specifically the kind of attack described here because most credential compromise *does not* (or has not historically) include session takeover.
In most credential compromise Alice will find Bob's credentials as the result of a leak or will collect them through phishing and Alice will use the credentials to try to access Bob's account. If Bob doesn't have 2FA set up, Alice is able to access Bob's account. I Bob DOES have 2FA set up, Alice sends the request but doesn't have the authentication code and so cannot access Bob's account.
In a session takeover, Alice sets up a website to collect credentials and session tokens and tries to trick Bob into putting his information in the website. If Bob does enter his information, Alice can use Bob's session token to access his account and if he terminates the session Alice can try to use Bob's credentials to log in again. If Bob doesn't have 2FA enabled, Alice is able to log in with no issues.
Sessions exist for a limited amount of time and many types of accounts will automatically terminate sessions after a period of inactivity, so session tokens generally have a much shorter lifespan than usernames and passwords do and active sessions can be immediately terminated once someone becomes aware of an attack.
We actually *do* provide phishing training for all of our clients, which includes sending faked phishing emails to them and providing further education on how to identify threats and best practices for logins (always check the url bar, fill from your password manager don't copy and paste).
But if you have to rely on the user not falling for phishing (or clicking the wrong link) 100% of the time you are going to have a bad time.
A lot of security is about redundancy. Educating users is one level. Antivirus is one level. Email filtering is one level. Password Management is one level. A firewall is one level. 2FA is one level. None of these things are going to work 100% of the time to prevent an intrusion, but a combination of all of these things (and others) should help to protect the user.
The goal isn't to find a one-shot trick that will block everything, the goal is to minimize the attack surface.
I don’t know what sort of attack it is when you’re logged into internet banking to make a payment and you enter the correct account but someone in the background has taken over to redirect the payment. But, I do know that the confirmation code SMS lists the *actual* destination, not the one you entered.
This might not be true of every sort of attack that does this, of course, but check the information in the 2FA notifications, don’t just enter the code.
I found this camera on the subway and look what was inside...
I would marry this man

I think I saw somewhere that the man got his camera back. Also what the fuck tumblr.
What Tumblr eldritch horror did I find
I need everyone to see this picture of a porcupine looking at stingrays in an aquarium
“I always remember having this fight with a random dude who claimed that ‘straight white men’ were the only true innovators. His prime example for this was the computer… the computer… THE COMPUTER!!! THE COM-PU-TER!!!
Alan Turing - Gay man and ‘father of computing’ Wren operating Bombe - The code cracking computers of the 2nd world war were entirely run by women Katherine Johnson - African American NASA mathematician and ‘Human computer’ Ada Lovelace - arguably the 1st computer programmer”
Also Margaret Hamilton - NASA computer scientist who put the first man on the moon - an as-yet-unmatched feet of software engineering, here pictured beside the full source of that computer programme. #myhero
Grace Hopper - the woman that coined the term “bug”
Grace Hopper did more than coin the term “bug”. She invented the first program linker in the early 1950s, for the UNIVAC I. A program linker translates instructions from one language to another (for example, numerical codes that represent instructions translated to machine code that computers can read), which is the very foundation of how computer’s operate independently. she also pulled a steve rogers and tried to enlist in the military a bunch of times and was denied. then, an exception was made for her when she joined the navy reserves, and she ended up serving for over 40 years (half of which was active duty). she retired from the navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper. she was born in NYC in 1906. Grace Hopper was a fucking badass.
also computing was typically a job for women (many of whom were black women that made incredible contributions) back in the day, so it’s absolutely fucking wild that straight white men think they are the foundation of computer innovation. men PUSHED women out and took the credit.

Adding Wendy Carlos to the list! Trans icon and pioneer of synthesized music!!
Also, just about every computerized device outside of desktops is running ARM chips now. Your phone, your keyboard, your car, your watch. Basically everything.
And ARM was primarily designed by Sophie Wilson, a trans woman.
Please don’t forget Hedy Lamarr. Screwed over by the US government. She helped develop spread spectrum communication, which in part led to the development of WiFi and Bluetooth tech.
