Hi. Okay I thought I would share some of my process as I’m working on what will eventually be a fully shaded + armored + highly detailed illustration of Sovaliah. Keep in mind this is not even remotely close to being done.
So I have been annoyed at my freehand proportions* lately so I decided to find a stock photo reference to begin this picture. I found many poses by Pyjama Cake and although their Deviantart is no longer active, they have many pics still up in and around pinterest.
*When I say freehand, I mean drawing out of my head with 0 references or anything
You can see all these images are numbered, so to break down my process accordingly…
1. Here I directly traced some of the gesture lines and a little bit of some shapes directly off the pose image.
2. I copied this trace layer onto a new photoshop document. As you can see it’s really vague, blocky, and some limbs are incomplete. I also flipped it horizontally because I am better at drawing faces that go to the left than to the right for some reason.
3. Here I started to refine the shape a little bit. Sovaliah is taller and has longer limbs than this model, but I particularly liked the curve of the hip from her waist so I kept/accentuated that. I also had to enlarge her hands to compensate for lengthening the limbs.
4. After refining the concept sketch, I went over with some vaguely sketchy lines. I plan to actually color over the lines in this piece so I am not going to be super anal about the way the lines look right now.
5. I started to sketch out Sovaliah’s hair, first in blocks with a thick brush and then I went in with a different color narrow line on another layer. You can also see the pose looks slightly different between 4-5 here. I felt like she had too much of a frontal lean going on in 4 so I duplicated the line layer and tried to correct it by raising her shoulder, lowering the other, and doing some fucky business around her boob and armpit. But as you can see something between the boob/armpit there doesn’t look quite right so I am still probably going to keep messing with this as I continue working on it.
6. I’m going in and cleaning up some of the sloppy sketchy lines. I started erasing some of the parts where her hair falls over her face and cleaning up the arrangement of her features.
After I’m content with the basic lines of the pose, I’m going to add on the details of her armor. I’m not sure if I will do that tonight yet though because that’s a lot of work and I have a bad habit of when I’ve been working too long to cut corners and try to finish a piece that doesn’t deserve to be done yet.
anyway thank u for coming to my rambling, maybe any part of this will be helpful to someone
thank you

“Do you love the color of fire?”
Sometimes I forget everything is made from bits of stuff that the stars are made of, and this makes me feel warm inside.
