the irony of this year's met gala theme being based on a short story about cloistered, decadently-dressed aristocracy desperately pillaging the natural resources at their disposal to hold the advancing tide of the restless underclass at bay is honestly baffling
honestly this is so much nicer than red

Growth capitalism is a deranged fantasy for lunatics.
Year 1, your business makes a million dollars in profit. Great start!
Year 2, you make another million. Oh no! Your business is failing because you didn't make more than last year!
Okay, say year 2 you make $2 mil. Now you're profitable!
Then year 3 you make $3 mil. Oh no! Your business is failing! But wait, you made more money than last year right? Sure, but you didn't make ENOUGH more than last year so actually your business is actively tanking! Time to sell off shares and dismantle it for parts! You should have made $4 mil in profit to be profitable, you fool!
If you're not making more money every year by an ever-increasing exponent, the business is failing!
Absolute degenerate LUNACY
Leverage had a lot of well-researched things to say about the real world, but the one I always come back to, from The Double Blind Job:
Sophie: These are not small fines. Last year, my department handled a case where the company had to pay out $2.5 billion.
Hoffman: Oh, yeah. Everybody heard about that. But what the news didn’t tell you is that that company made $16 billion on the same drug. That fine was 14% of the profit. 14%. That’s like tipping your waiter.
“A fine is a price” – John Rogers, creator of “Leverage”
In some countries the fines associated with things like parking tickets are defined in terms of the offender’s income, so that a ticket that might cost an average person $20 would cost a billionaire millions. I think we should do the same with corporate fines - if a company does something that breaks the law, it should be fined in proportion to how much it made from breaking the law, so that a company that makes 16B through illegal means gets fined, say, 18B for doing so.
in 2012 we had an anti-abortion demonstrator on campus. I was in a ballet intensive and I walked by him—30 yards away & in total silence—wearing leggings and a sweater over my leotard, and he yelled, “nice cameltoe, dyke!”
I got to class and told my instructor about it and we complained to campus security, who told us that the campus was open to the public and that it was “his legal right to assembly and protest.”
so I guess the NYPD just showed up this time because these protestors forgot to sexually harass students and call them homophobic slurs. Easy mistake to make
made some bumper stickers 👍

Here's a useless thought my head just supplied me with that I absolutely can't use.
Co-op game where if one player sees another, they die.
Both die? Just the one who does the seeing? Just the one who is seen? All players or just one crucial character? Do reflections count?
"Don't turn around. I'm right behind you. I'm going to put the mcguffin down behind you and go around the corner, I'll tell you when it's safe to turn around; let me know when you're looking away again."

American infrastructure is turbofucked on truly fundamental levels. We measure shit with bespoke ratios like ounces per cubic meter and gallons per foot and we insist on calling relative density specific gravity instead of relative density.
I feel like an absolute clown every time specific gravity comes up. It feels like meeting a nuclear physicist or something who insists on being addressed as a doctor of natural philosophy.
