I guess this is kinda a Knowledge post, but I’m not tagging it as such because it’s more of my opinions than anything. Just a few things related to the Craft and how I define them to myself. Enjoy!
Hello! Waya here with a little post about my personal views on different words related to the Craft and what they mean to me. Just a few opinions, of course. Jumping right in…
“Witch” and words related to it: a practitioner of witchcraft in any form. Can be male, female, and anyone in between or otherwise. Some males have the view that “witches” are typically or always female, and so they call themselves a wizard. Yeah, sure, fine, whatever floats your boat. The word warlock, to me, means a witch who is.. I don’t want to say “evil” because of course witchcraft is a spectrum, but a witch who takes advantage of or controls others and generally uses magick for ill purposes is a warlock to me.
Magick and Magic: I actually have a post on this, but in a nutshell, “magic” is illusion, sleight of hand, and generally what you expect from a magician at a childs birthday party. “Magick” is the reserve of energy and a life force that witches like us can tap into and manipulate.
Athame versus Boline: both are ritual knives, however, an Athame is used as a conducter of power and is typically not used as a knife would be. Reserved for ritualistic purposes with no use in cutting, carving, etc. A boline is typically white handled knife and is used for the purposes in magick that require a knife but are unsuitable for an athame, such as cutting herbs, inscribing candles, pricking the skin if one does bloodcraft, etc.
Runic Alphabets: there are two most used runic alphabets, and although the runes are the same, the names differ and the meanings sometimes differ slightly. The two popular alphabets are Elder and Younger Futhark. Elder Futhark has 24 runes, and over a few centuries early on, it became widely used amongst the Germanic tribes that fought for survival throughout Europe. By the Viking Age, however, (roughly, 793 to 1066) Elder Futhark gradually gave way to Younger Futhark. The Younger Futhark has only 16 runes.
Pagan, Wiccan, Witchcraft: A lot pf people are Wiccan. Obviously thats completely fine and all, but many think that Wicca is the ONLY path of witchcraft, which just isn’t true. Wiccans believe in a couple key things that define them as Wiccans: the Threefold rule, which states that magick should not be used for ill intent (most Wiccans don’t curse people, for example) because the energy that you put out into the universe, good or bad, will come back upon you threefold. They also believe in the Goddess and the God, dieties who preside over the Earth in both feminine and masculine forms. Pagans are anyone who practice religions that are not of the Christian denomination, or people holding religious beliefs other than those of the main world religions. It’s kind of used as an umbrella term for those who practice witchcraft but don’t label themselves Wiccans. I, for example, am not wiccan, and my Craft encompasses a range of bits of magick from mostly Native American (I’m part Cherokee) and Norse (also part Norse) religion/magick.
That’s all I got right now. As always, message if you have questions! Blessed Be!!
