The cool air is quite nice since it’s becoming spring, the nice cool air is better than the bitter cold of winter air. You stand outside on your balcony with a nice warm cup of caff. It’s difficult to wipe the smile from your face as today is the day you get to cook with none other than your love, Thrawn.

You tap your nail on the table, eyes fixed on the screen in front of you, on this desperately white sheet… Your next due date is in 3 days and you still have nothing. You’re that close to taking drugs in hope to have an epiphany midway trip. You spin on your stool observing your equally desperately empty bedroom. Your double bed is way too tidy to your taste for a new wed couple, but Thrawn is far away from home in his spaceship. Sometimes you wish you could accompany him and follow his adventures. A life full of adrenaline and dangers is what you lack to be a good author, you think.
You sigh and go take an umpteenth cup of coffee mixed with an energy drink. The taste is disgusting but that’s what you’re running on for five days and four nights. So much shudders travel your body from time to time, “Relax! You can make it work until the due date.” you tell yourself as you try to control the shivers in your hands.
As you pour your drink you hear a knock on the door, “Great” you think “Who doesn’t know how to operate a bell in this day and age?” you shuffle along to the door and look into the judas. Nothing. You press the button and your door opens on emptiness . You pass your head through the door to look around but see no one. You jump when you hear another knock coming from inside your apartment. “Oh no…” You run to the bathroom to take your pills, as you look up in the mirror you see a specter leaving the room. You sigh, passing water on your face, “It will pass, I just have to wait…”
You go back to the kitchen and consider your cup. You take it and pour it down the sink, better not mixing pills and stimulants. You sit down in your chair, and put on some music, you shuffle for a minute until you find Thrawn’s favorite. It makes you smile and you put it on repeat. You place yourself in front of your screen, deeply breathing and massaging your temple. “This white sheet is a beast… A beast I must slay… I can do it!” Filled with a new, invigorating energy and sweet music in your ears you start typing away. And everything goes well until you hear a new knock on your window, which is weird cause you’re more than 300 floors high. You look at your window with knots in your stomach. The sweet melody dissolves itself in mushy sounds, you hear steps behind you but you see nothing when you spin on yourself. You hug yourself when you hear those steps walking from the kitchen to the bedroom, and walking around the room like it owned the place.
You hear your doorbell rings, “Huh… Coming!” You walk, pressing yourself against the wall to prevent you from coming in front of the wraith walking in your bedroom, you run to the door and open it. Empty once again. You close it back in a hurry, leaning against the door, feeling out of breath. The steps come running at you at full speed, but there is nothing in front of you. You go back to the bathroom, reach for your pills and contemplate them for a second dose. Thrawn’s voice resonates inside your skull, telling you not to take a second one for those are potent medicines. You sigh and put them back in their box.
You shuffle to your well tidied bed and you collapse on it, burying your head under the pillows to muffle the sounds, but to no avail. You curl on yourself, hands clasped on your ear, trying to shut away the knocks and a hollow laugh sends shivers down your spine. A shadow passes in front of you, you close your eyes with all your might, determined to not suffer the hallucinations until the effects of the pills kick in, but it’s difficult to lose control over your own environment and you feel tears coming to your eyes. You hunch even more, sniffing and sobbing when you suddenly feel the bed side beside you lowering and a hand on your back. You lose your breath with the surprise. You turn, slowly, unsure, and you see Thrawn, laying beside you, caressing your back gently. Your eyes lock, and you don’t need to say anything. He knows. You turn completely and snuggle against him and he welcomes you with open arms, wrapping them around your shoulders and patting your head. He kisses your forehead and shush away the demons.
“Weren’t you supposed to leave for several months?” You manage to ask between two sobs.
“I did leave for several months.” He corrects “But I’m glad I came home today.” He caresses your cheek “You are late for your due date again?”
This man knows you well. You bury your head in his neck.
“I have three days left, and I thought I could make it without sleeping until the date.” You explain.
“Ch’acah, you know stress worsens your illness.” It isn’t a reproach, but an observation “You should take more care of yourself.”
“I took my pills, I just needed to wait for the symptoms to wear off…” You defend yourself. “It’s just… worse than what I’m used to. Can you… Can you hold me until I feel better?”
He simply smiles a little.
“Anything for you, ch’acah.”
You close your eyes with relief, and realize only now that all the shadows have gone silent.
