harrow the ninth is really like. what if orpheus didn't turn around. what if he wasn't going to turn around. what if he kept his face pointed resolutely ahead and trusted that she was there even not knowing what he was hoping for. what if orpheus had to be cajoled and threatened and eventually forced to turn around. what if eurydice hadn't been told the rules and also had a crippling fear of abandonment and spent the whole time pleading with him to look at her. what if orpheus trusted that she would follow him but eurydice couldn't trust that he would care. what if orpheus was told point-blank that eurydice was almost certainly not actually behind him and he chose to keep walking anyway. what if eurydice touched sunlight again and orpheus wasn't there. what then.
i know the term has sketchy origins but "oppression olympics" is such a real thing.
you see it in basically every group. ppl love creating hierarchies of who is Most Oppressed that leave 0 room for nuance, usually to justify their own personal claim to the status that theoretically affords them the least amount of privilege.
this asinine discourse ultimately does nothing to help dismantle actual oppressive systems. it's all just for, like, in group clout points.
everyone should read There Is No Hierarchy of Oppressions by Audrey Lorde and also La Guera by Cherrie Moraga & specifically this paragraph:
In this country, lesbianism is a poverty-as is being brown, as is being a woman, as is being just plain poor. The danger lies in ranking the oppressions. The danger lies in failing to acknowledge the specificity of the oppression. The danger lies in attempting to deal with oppression purely from a theoretical base. Without an emotional, heartfelt grappling with the source of our own oppression, without naming the enemy within ourselves and outside of us, no authentic, non-hierarchical connection among oppressed groups can take place.
Saw the Barbie movie. It was fascinating, had some laughs, pulled a lot of strong feelings, definitely had some interesting politics and Bad moments. The thing that stuck out to me was (spoilers ig) the moment when, during the scene where the Barbies are pretending to be vulnerable to distract the Kens, the one played by a trans actress gets a close up where she just lists a few anxieties about her appearance and presentation and whether people will "like her" and. If you know that that's a trans woman, it reads as a definite acknowledgement of the specific and severe flavor of misogyny trans women face.
And I was excited about it at first! Transfem rep that is an expression of our lives and our experiences! Except... it's not, not explicitly. I remembered the Gwen Stacy shitstorm, and how neither she nor this Barbie were explicitly trans. And I saw the next decade laid out, clever winks and nods to trans identity and experiences, but played in such a way that fragile conservatives aren't confronted with it. And the thought of my existance going from "object of horror and mockery" to "quiet dogwhistle so as not to offend anyone" really put a fuckin downer on the whole experience. I need to watch more indie stuff.
trans women talking about their experiences with (conditional and coercive) male privilege and how much that changed when they came out and/or transitioned used to be like. an accepted conversation, proof of the misogyny trans women face. why are these anons suddenly saying that trans people talking about things that happen to us is Illegal now
tbh i think it's bc a lot of queer discourse since the pandemic has shifted to focus entirely on online dynamics. a lot of queer and trans ppl came out during lockdown and didn't really have experience with irl queer and trans community, so they just talked about what they experienced online, which is how so much discourse became based entirely in identity. bc when you're not interacting with someone face to face, all you have is what they put in their bio. so if someone treats you poorly based on what they saw in your bio, you think "ah me identifying this way is what makes me a target."
and when you try to transfer this concept into real-world experiences it just...doesn't work. you don't have an irl bio strapped to your chest that people can read and see how to treat you. it's based entirely in people's perception of you. which can be a difficult topic to discuss for people whose internal identity is incongruent with the way people perceive them. that's like. a whole entire thing trans people have been talking about for ages. but i think a lot of people have decided that because it makes them dysphoric to talk about, we just shouldn't talk about it at all.
so when someone brings up an experience they had that doesn't align with what the identity in their bio is "supposed to" experience, the conclusion is that either they're not that identity or they did not have that experience. and usually people go with the latter, because again, identity is prioritized over actual real world experiences.
Royalists are from a different planet, dude.
Joe doesn’t care. He’s Irish!
Me, a trans man: Saying you hate trans men just like you hate all other men isn’t equality, it just makes you more hateful. Please stop telling trans men that masculinity is bad.
Tumblr, pissing on the poor again: So you hate women???
"The trannies should be able to piss in whatever toilet they want and change their bodies however they want. Why is it my business if some chick has a dick or a guy has a pie? I'm not a trannie or a fag so I don't care, just give 'em the medicine they need."
"This is an LGBT safe space. Of COURSE I fully support individuals who identify as transgender and their right to self-determination! I just think that transitioning is a very serious choice and should be heavily regulated. And there could be a lot of harm in exposing cis children to such topics, so we should be really careful about when it is appropriate to mention trans issues or have too much trans visibility."
One of the above statements is Problematic and the other is slightly annoying. If we disagree on which is which then working together for a better future is going to get really fucking difficult.
Someone who says they don't care if dudes wear dresses and makeup is a better ally than someone who says they're a safe space for women and non-binary people. I am not joking.
no fucking awoo. no awoo right now. its late. its not awoo time. its sleeping time. go the fuck to bed.

"When you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves" Weak shit. Fucking pathetic. If your journey of revenge only kills two people you're absolute dogshit at revenge. Get good. Dig a trench. Die of mustard gas.
having to explain very extremely basic concepts of harm reduction to internet puritans is so bizarre. like Yes there are some kinks that will always carry an inherent risk of injury, Yes people should be made fully aware of that as part of informed consent, No that cannot be accomplished by you telling everyone how yucky icky awful terrible kink is and how it's inherently patriarchal and evil and should be morally mandated out of existence
ok but what if i
