How to find fanfic from the olden days

So you’ve discovered some old 90’s show and damn, you so want to read the fic for that, but you can’t find it. It’s from The Olden Days before Tumblr, before AO3, and in some cases, even before Livejournal and fanfiction.net. It was in the days of Geocities. It was NOT in the days of yahoo groups because even I don’t know how to take you back in time that far. But I did recently go and dig up all the old Star Trek: Voyager fic so let me show you how to proceed. Here be dragons, of course. Also vampire slayers. Warrior princesses. The smoking dude from the X-Files, whatever his name. And lots and lots and lots of Star Trek. 

Lastly, remember that fandom was dominated by straight white women for a long time and the earlier you go, the more infuriated you’ll probably be by depictions of POC and queer folk. Keep in mind that a lot of the fic was written while the show or book series was still ongoing, so sometimes big revelations etc. will not be featured. Sometimes, new versions of canon didn’t exist yet - for example, LotR fic was solely book fandom fic before the movies. 

Respect your elders when you encounter weird fandom quirks of those days. This is free fic archived for your pleasure, don’t be a dick about it.

Oooh I'm fascinated by dinosaur colours and would love to research those... but I think all the dinosaurs that have left no remains at all would be even more interesting! Especially since they're likely to make up fairly large portions of some of the ecosystems: mountains and rainforests are both very bad at fossilisation, so chances are we're missing quite a lot of creatures that lived in them! I'm sure I could keep an eye out for their colours while I'm at it.

It is funny. Recently I had a transphobe argue to me, that "well, it is all made up! Animals will still not know that you identify as a man". Which to me is so funny, because while there has never been extensive research done on this topic, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence showing the exact opposite.

As someone who has done a lot of work with animals, I can tell you, that those animals that for one reason or another like one gender more or less than another often show the same loving or hostile behavior towards people completely depending on the gender the people actually identifies as.

"Sure," some people might say, "because if you take hormons you gonna smell like the gender to an animal." But that is the funny part. Animals often act according to that with trans adults who are still in egg mode. Who have not come out yet. And nobody knows why and how they can tell.

But some of the harsher animals with a "gender preference in humans" are like the best trans indicators. You have not admitted to yourself you are a guy? Yeah, this cat is gonna hate you anyways. Because this cat hates men.

You do not have the street cred OR the activist cred to be talking about killing cops, babe.

if you're complaining about voting in the comments because "biden is part of the problem too" then this post is about you. cause you aren't even involved enough in real world activism to genuinely understand how important the rest of the fucking ballet is. like yeah, fuck biden. but don't also fuck your local community by not voting for progressives in your area.

cause I promise you that they are running against fascists just as bad as trump and they don't have the same built in following that these trump picked candidates do. conservatives vote all down the ballet. and that's how you get book ban fanatics on the school board and gun rights candidates on your city council. and they're able to cause lots of damage without anywhere near as much push back.

big changes don't happen at once. change always starts with small steps and gets bigger and easier as we keep fighting. not being able to fix everything in one go is never a good enough reason not to fix anything.

and don't forget that the kids in public school right now are our future whether they are being accurately educated on history and science or not. the difference is made by voting all down the ballet. school board candidates need you. state legislative candidates need you. the people affected by all of those measures and resolutions need you. so fucking vote.

I'm a Tumblr old, longtime leftist, and outright racial justice advocate (and/or annoyance, depending on who you ask) in fandom. I also work in politics in real life. I have learned that, roughly speaking, the more active a leftist is online, or the more radical they are, then the less I can trust them to be in any way helpful in the real world, affecting real life politics.

its the last month of 2023 so i’m just gonna say it: what the absolute fuck was that

so you know that semi-popular convention in KimChay fic where Chay introduces Kim to omegaverse fic and scars his brain? we deserve a scenario where Kim discovers omegaverse fic and gets stupidly, embarrassingly horny over it.

like. who knows how Kim finds out about this, he's probably just being a guy on the internet and accidentally stumbles into this, or maybe he watched the omegaverse show currently airing after prime tv in Thailand rn. whatever, who cares, the how is not important. but after his incredibly baffled "what the fuck????" introduction to it, Kim is reading up on it and telling himself this trope is fucking weird (the babies come from WHERE?!), its fucked up (trans people??? exist????), its rebranded bio-essentialism with new flavors of crack science, etc etc.

he's also about to squirm out of his pants because he's so fucking into it.

Chay??? being so into him he couldn't NOT claim him??? special scents to mark your partner??? mating bites?????? we haven't even touched on the regularly reoccurring marathon sex yet.

Once Chay sees how absolutely, horribly into it Kim is, of course he's going to do everything he can to make his horny little dreams come true. He gifts Kim a special cologne he can use for Scenting PurposesTM. Whenever Kim wears it, it's a signal to Chay that he wants to get fucked absolutely nasty. (Then later, sometimes he wears it in public, too, whenever he wants to feel extra claimed by Chay. It's a kinky thing but it also becomes a kind of emotional assurance for him, and Chay is absolutely melting.)

How could you have left out the heats? That's arguably the best part, when Kim gets into it enough that he lets Chay melt his brain with mind blowing sex for hours at a time.

Chay is having the time of his life. Kim rarely asks for things he wants, so on the few occasions he does, Chay is going to make sure he gets it. But he's also a little shit and he's going to fic with Kim about it, because of all things, this is the kink he least expected tight-laced Kim to be into.

Kim gives himself permission to be as needy as he wants during his ~heats~ and Chay is absolutely feral for it. It's almost like subspace for him; it may take him a little bit to settle into the headspace for it, to let go of his tight control and let himself have this, but when he does? Oh, Chay loves it. Kim is so sweet and needy for him, happily accepting everything Chay wants to give him, instead of fighting it. He can take care of himself but he doesn't always have to, and this is one of the few times he'll let Chay do it for him.

Kim is also an absolute menace about the whole thing. Like. He gets scarily deep into the rabbit hole. One thing about Kim is that when he commits to something, he goes all the way in.

Which is why, for the sake of realism, he innocently suggests Chay take some ~performance enhancers~, to help with the marathon sex. Chay is young and virile but he can only take so much, and Kim is enough of a masochist that he can and will go literally all day, even when he gets all oversensitive and sore.

Chay agrees, and then Kim is unstoppable. Starts getting spicy with the drugs, since he can conceivably get his hands on whatever he wants whenever he wants. Chay starts getting a little concerned until he gets to see Kim high on ecstacy exactly one (1) time, and then he is sold.

Kim also, menace that he is, makes sure to schedule his "heats". One or two days a month when neither of them have anything going on, so they can really sink into it.

Then one day Chay comes home to a needy Kim pushing him into the nest he's built a week early, wearing nothing but one of Chay's oversized old hoodies and he rubs his dripping ass against Chay's crotch like 🥺 my heat came early 🥺

plan for down time. have a few hours at the end of every day to just do fun stuff like engage in your hyperfixations. even if you didnt get all of your work done that day, have the rest anyway. you probably spent the whole day beating yourself up for not doing what you Should be doing, so you still need the break.

if you never eat vegetables because its too much effort to chop and cook them, get the frozen or canned shit. it doesnt go off for ages and you just have to microwave it. theres no point buying fresh vegetables if they just keep going off and being left to rot in the bottom of your fridge

if you struggle to decide what to have for dinner every day, take the decision out of it. choose a set of meals and eat those on rotation until you get sick of them, then choose some new ones and do it again.

its not stupid if it works! our brains literally have a chemical deficiency. you are allowed to accommodate yourself. go forth and stop making your life more difficult than it has to be because "this shouldn't be this hard". it is hard, so make it easier.
