when people make fun of bands who’s fan base is mostly females (as if the gender of their fans has anything to do with the band), I like to quote Kurt Cobain

5sos really outdid themselves lyrically with jet black heart, the song itself is full of meaning and hidden symbolism. starting out with “every fire i’ve ignited faded to grey”, grey is color symbolism for unemotional/detached meaning the relationships completely fell apart in the past. whoever they’re with now knows their fear of the relationship and knows they’re “broken”. now their partner can see the “jet black heart” that’s filled with mystery and vulnerability the person is also seeing inside to what the black is covering up. as the guy has his vulnerabilities and hidden troubles explored, a hurricane stirs up trying to keep them apart with the troubles exposed. however those “chemicals moving between” them builds the guy toward love and feeling of ease with his partner. throughout the “night” the guy still has his vulnerabilities and trouble appear “maybe there’s nothing after midnight that could make you stay”. however the partner of the guy has him still hopeful moving into “let’s forget who we are and dive into the dark as we burst into colors we turn into light” meaning as the two of them explore the night the guys darkness slowly uncovers itself leaving the light to finally let the boy live and love once again without fear.

this my friends is why i fully believe that 5sos are talented artists fully capable of writing songs full of intense meanings. why we need to take them seriously and promote their music, because the world deserves to hear this intensely beautiful song.
