The Hunger Games Renaissance. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023), dir. Francis Lawrence

"Then he reads the list of past District 12 victors. In seventy-four years, we have had exactly two. Only one is still alive. Haymitch Abernathy, a paunchy, middle aged man, who at this moment appears hollering something unintelligible, staggers onto the stage, and falls into the third chair." - The Hunger Games, pg. 19

Props to Suzanne Collins for having some throw away line in one of the first chapters of The Hunger Games about there only ever having been two victors from district 12 and then never mentioning who the one was besides Haymitch and then writing a book ten years later all about who that first victor was with leaving us with just enough doubt about her fate... now that is good writing

Dean Casca Highbottom apologizing to Lucy Gray for what she's been through and spending the rest of his life regretting ever uttering the concept of the hunger games out loud and deeming it his worst mistake and hating Dr Gaul for taking it that far despite him repeatedly asking her not to and hating Crassus Snow for stealing the idea and giving it to Dr Gaul and hating himself for coming up with it even if he was drunk and being defined by it for the rest of his life

Geoffrey Hinton "the godfather of AI" quits Google and regrets his life's work due to risks to humanity and "consoles himself by telling himself that if it hadn't been him it would have been someone else"

J. Robert Oppenheimer "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" spending the rest of his life trying to denounce the use of his life's work and trying and failing to take back control of it and saying he has blood on his hands and being awarded and forever defined by it

okay I've been seeing people talk about how Snow got scared sh*tless when he heard Katniss sing the Hanging Tree in Mockingjay, which is true, but I haven't heard enough about how furious and terrified he must have been when he first heard Katniss sing to Rue, which is the same song Lucy Gray sang to Maude Ivory at the lake.

I forget if the Hanging Tree or the Meadow song was introduced first in TBOSAS, but that's the first song Snow heard. The first song of Lucy Gray's that Katniss somehow knew 64 years later. And she's not just humming it. She's singing it to Rue as she dies before covering her body in flowers.

And he must have known, in his bones, that Katniss was going to be the end of him. God, I love how the prequel explained why Snow was so blindsided and fixated with her instead of Coin.

Like? We know that Katniss and Lucy Gray are different people. They have different personalities and families. But to Snow, it really must have seemed like Lucy Gray came back to haunt him, and it started with Katniss singing Rue to sleep.

literally fuck companies that don't want their employees to act "unprofessional" in front of customers. I'm at a five guys rn and the employees here are joking around calling orders back and forth to each other and saying things in weird voices and laughing with each other while they work. Someone just came in for their shift while I was waiting for my food and was greeted by the whole kitchen with a secret handshake lookin thing. It was so silly and cute I love seeing ppl have fun at work and I know my food's gonna be bomb bc the ppl there are having fun with each other. Let employees be people and friends and have fun what is the issue!!!!

Katniss never really knew just how big menace she was to Snow.

In a new fucked up way, Snow truly believed he "owned" Lucy Gray once again, because he was the only person left that truly remembered her.

But then Katniss sang Lucy Gray's song in her meadow, turned it into a hymn of the second rebellion, and unknowingly freed her from Snow's grasp.

Lucy Gray plays a part in Snow's downfall, The Hanging Tree becomes immortalized in history.

She no longer dies with him.
