Declutter Tumblr

The new layout it a whole mess. Thankfully Xkit can already help with a bunch of this! I'm sure it'll give more options soon.

Vanilla Tumblr: (I have marked in red what can be removed. The tabs can be set not to stick, so you will really only see them at the top of your dash. Empty box on the left for hidden notifications and shop sparkle, i just didn't have any. I'm EU so no Live for me).

Xkit Rewritten Tumblr:

The settings I use:

every tiktok โ€œhealthโ€ trend that ends up on my dash makes me glad I listen to Sawbones. for every gullible (or susceptible to ocd delusions) person that believes their body is riddled with parasites and they need to drink laundry detergent about it, I know that Iโ€™m at least over here actively learning about actual, evidence-based medicine. net neutral? maybe thats naive lol anyway listen to Sawbones

So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,

And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.

And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?

But nope, that's not the case:

Some selections from the article:

"The region has been experiencing some of the most intense heat waves in recent years, but in many cases theyโ€™ve been under-reported due to misconceptions about Africansโ€™ ability to withstand them.

โ€œAfrica is seen as a sunny and hot continent,โ€ said Amadou Thierno Gaye, a research scientist and professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. โ€œPeople think we are used to heat, but we are having high temperatures for a longer duration. Nobody is used to this.โ€

"The Sahel, for instance, has been heating at a faster pace than the global average despite being hot already. Burkina Faso and Mali, both in West Africaโ€™s Sahel, are among countries that are set to become almost uninhabitable by 2080, if the world continues on its current trajectory, a UK university study found. Its people are especially vulnerable due to shrinking resources, such as water, and poor amenities, and a dearth of trees and parks means there are few options for places to cool off."

FYI if your employer does this, if they have done it for a long time especially, you and your coworkers could be owed huge amounts of unpaid wages and it would be an easy suit if there is a paper trail like this and your employer is placing strict requirements on your behavior while not at work. Employment lawyers generally work on contingency. Just food for thought.

ngl the "im white so i dont talk abt any characters' race ever bc im afraid of accidentally saying something racist" approach to fandom is like. very weak. imo.

like first of all: i get that "i dont incorporate race into my media analysis because i'm afraid of messing up" comes from a different place than "i don't incorporate race into my media analysis because I Don't See Race ๐Ÿ˜Š there is only The Human Race." but it has the same functional effect, right? that effect being that your analysis of [INSERT MEDIA HERE] ignores the very real way that race impacts people.

second of all: it feels kinda lazy! like ur saying "i dont know enough abt race to feel comfortable commenting on how race affects this show and i dont care enough to learn." the only way to become more comfortable discussing race is to actually practice discussing race. but when i see people saying this it feels like they're saying "i'm white, which means i don't know how to talk about race, and i don't have to know how to talk about race, and i don't ever have to know how to talk about race, so i'm choosing to never learn how to talk about race."

third of all: just because you don't openly talk about race doesn't mean you're any less likely to accidentally say or do something racist. implicit biases run deep, y'all. it's probably already there in your interpretation of the show. but the "i don't want to accidentally say something racist" implies that you are positive that your interpretation of the show isn't racist. and i'm not saying you're wrong. but i'm saying that if a person of color tells you that something you said about [INSERT MEDIA HERE] was racist, you better be prepared to actually listen and not just brush them off because "i can't be racist! i purposefully never talk about race just to make sure i'm not racist!"

which brings me to my final point: if you do accidentally say something racist... literally just apologize. if someone says you've been doing something racist, apologize and stop doing that thing. it's literally not that hard. i've done it. i've seen other people do it. "i'm scared of being called racist!" is such a weak excuse im tired of it. getting called racist is not the end of the fucking world. calm the fuck down and grow a spine. jesus.

and yeah sometimes youโ€™ll apologize for saying or doing something racist and people wonโ€™t accept the apology and they wonโ€™t forgive you.

thatโ€™s also fine. people are allowed to not forgive you. and youโ€™re allowed to move on and try to do better without agonizing over the people who dislike you, even if they have a good reason for not liking you. it takes some maturity yeah but like itโ€™s possible to do.

still so fucking weird to go from real life, where a cis man being flamboyant/effeminate/camp is judged like 70+% by how he speaks and carries himself, to online queer communities, which often seem to have no concept of male gender non-conformity that doesnโ€™t involve wearing a skirt

i promise you, a man can be fem to the point of being in danger while wearing literally exactly the same thing as a hypermasculine guy. a boring basic black suit. a t shirt and jeans. a UNIFORM. gender conformity is not only about what you wear

None of you have watched that heartbreaking scene in The Birdcage where Albert gives up wearing everything he likes to try and blend in for their sonโ€™s conservative prospective in-laws and is so awkward and uncomfortable that no one says much until finally he says, defeated, โ€œI know what youโ€™re thinking - dressed like this, Iโ€™m even more obvious, arenโ€™t I?โ€ and it shows.

Here, have your queer heart broken:

This is what Iโ€™m talking about. This is still literally how it is in most places in the Midwest if youโ€™re trying to โ€œpassโ€ for straight/cis/whatever.

I cannot begin to describe how hard I cried when I saw this scene the first time and how confused my conservative family was as to why I was crying.

Itโ€™s so funny how literally the way a man holds his wrists is an indication of femininity but also people think itโ€™s all about makeup and clothing. But weโ€™re also at a point that if you have a suit that is any color other than black, dark grey, or navy, itโ€™s flamboyant.

Menโ€™s sartorial stylings are so rigidly controlled itโ€™s painful. Tim Gunn here is at the very absolute bleeding edge of โ€œacceptably masculineโ€ here for most cishet men, just for some noticible stripes, patterns, and purple, and thatโ€™s before he even moves. This is how restricted it is.

But Trixie Mattel (out of drag here) wearing standard masculine garb is could still be deemed unacceptably feminine for body language alone.

This is why we talk about โ€œtoxic masculinityโ€ โ€“ the idea that any expression of emotion besides anger or even wearing colorful clothes is non-masculine and therefore restricted is horrifying. It sucks! Men should be allowed to express themselves outside of a tiny box of acceptable behavior, because theyโ€™re, y'know, people, and people have a wide range of expression in the way they like to look and move and act. I honestly feel like itโ€™s gotten worse over the last couple decades, too. If you look at menโ€™s fashions from the 70s and even into the 80s, thereโ€™s a lot of style choices that look pretty cringe to us, butโ€ฆ. you also see a lot more color and pattern in suits than you do now. Iโ€™m not sure when this started to shift, or if itโ€™s tied in to the increasing lack of color in all consumer products, but it sucks.

oh seems very suspicious to see the barbie movie tumblr pop up on my dash after the strike. maybe it was made before, but Iโ€™m actually seeing it now

remember:

thereโ€™s no boycott on going to see new media

but there is a promotional blackout

donโ€™t do the studioโ€™s marketing work for them

I just checked their archive. They created it Today, July 17th.

prior to the strike they did not have an official tumblr lmaoooo

donโ€™t reblog their shit

Is their blog run by a screenwriter or actor? Are you now or do you intend to be a member of SAG-AFTRA? If the answer to both of these questions is โ€œnoโ€ then there is NO NEED TO BOYCOTT, AND IN FACT YOU ARE ACTING AGAINST THE SPECIFIC REQUESTS OF THE ACTORS.

Please, review the guidelines they have set out. They are widely available at this point. Websites are allowed to run promotional material, and you are perfectly allowed to do so as well UNLESS YOU ARE A MEMBER OF SAG-AFTRA OR INTEND TO BE IN THE FUTURE.

Man, thereโ€™s gonna be such a huge wave of tears when people who were tricked into doing promo realize they fucked themselves.

There really arenโ€™t, this is likely a promotional campaign that was already established prior to the strike, and the promotional blackout does not apply to general fans. It doesย apply to certain influencers, but the definition ofย โ€œinfluencerโ€ in this case requires to you be providing promotion and advertising to brands/companies already, AND either be working under the SAG-AFTRA influencer agreement, or hoping to do so in the future. And those people know who they are.

Random tumblr fans are free to interact with the Barbie film tumblr as much as they want. Which will probably not be much, most of us donโ€™t interact with the promotional blogs that much, but itโ€™s still not going to fuck people over unless theyโ€™re in the industry and not paying attention.

The most important consideration relevant to how stuff gets spread around tumblr is this:

When covering this media, name all of the writers involved and emphasize the importance of their work.

As such, if youโ€™re going to reblog something from the Barbie Movie tumblr, make a point of adding the names of the writers: Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach to your reblog. Or find a version of the post where some one else has already done so.

Feel free to check the link for yourself, thereโ€™s more there about critical framing and discussion, but thatโ€™s not likely to be relevant to most of you.

I cannot put into words how much I Fucking Loathe the fact that when you search something on youtube now it will randomly intersperse blocks of "people also watched" and "for you" into the results. That's not what I searched for, youtube. I typed in a search query because I wanted to see search results, not random unrelated garbage you have placed in my way apparently to either inconvenience me or force me to scroll further for actual results. I despise your wretched little games and every time I see it I can only instantly close the tab as I am overcome with the urge to burn something down.

"I despise your wretched little games" perfectly conveys how I feel about the entire algorithm/attention economy

They also refuse to actually show the parameters you searched for. If you sort by โ€œupload date,โ€ the first few videos might be more recent ones by upload date, but anything past that youโ€™ll find a video that was uploaded five years ago, then five months ago, then three years ago, etc, whichโ€”NO! Thatโ€™s NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR!! PUT THEM IN ORDER!!!

Also sometimes the โ€œpeople also watchedโ€ bullcrap will not only be entirely unrelated, it will also be videos with violent, sometimes outright triggering thumbnails. Iโ€™ve gotten some AWFUL unrelated video thumbnails just when searching for video game music videos.

Lumpfish come in a variety of shapes and colors.

[He scoops up the fish, it spits water and he turns it toward the camera]

This one is stumpy and green. Very beautiful, very powerful.

[He picks up another fish and turns it toward the camera]

This is what a normal lumpfish looks like. It is more elongated, but still a vibrant blue color. Very beautiful, very powerful.

[He picks up another fish and turns it toward the camera]

This is one of the stumpiest ones we have. Its hump is very high. It is very stumpy, but yet very beautiful, and very powerful.

[He pans over a lot of fish, all looking up at the camera]

My fish army is ever growing, and soon I will over throw the world. Very beautiful, very powerful.

loyalty missions in mass effect (specifically, mass effect 2) are so funny to me, like you have to go on this side quest to process your trauma or else youโ€™ll die in a swarm of alien bees ten hours from now.

Everyone absolutely SHOULD get at least one full month off of school/work/whatever and multiple smaller breaks each year, I am not arguing that point.

But the reason kids (in many cultures) get the summer off from school is not because they need a vacation from learning. It's because kids were expected to help with harvests and other homestead-management tasks that peak during the summer, and would be pulled from classes en masse so it just made logistical sense to make it official so that everyone could have equal access to the material taught.

The multiple breaks throughout the year were mostly hard-won concessions to teacher's unions so that the teachers have a chance to prepare lessons and update their own knowledge base. Some of the multiple breaks throughout the year are also purely operational considerations when the local governments will only fund so many hours per year (this happened in my area when the ultra-conservative government slashed funding for teachers and suddenly the kids got half a dozen more PD days sprinkled throughout the year)
