Out of all the comics to address discrimination within the LGBT community, The Flintstones wasn’t what I expected. But here we are.

Issue #4.

Fred and Wilma are facing discrimination from the people of Bedrock for their monogamous lifestyle, which goes against the free-for-all fuckfest that is the norm in the prehistoric society. A clear metaphor for same-sex couples.

They go on a getaway trip with a bunch of other married couples. But on the trip, they discover the trip leader, despite preaching acceptance for married couples and being a trailblazer of social reform, has his own prejudices. Specifically against same-sex couples.

In the next two pages, Fred explains why they’re ought to care about more than just themselves when it comes to preaching tolerance and rights.

edit: it has been brought to my attention that i misstepped in labeling the revolution in ukraine as reactionary in nature, and that ukraine is only trying to purge itself of the influence the russian oligarchy. i apologize for this error, and i am sorry i can not take it back now that this has been so widely reblogged, i should have only brought up mccains involvement with the neo-nazis and refrained from speaking on the wider situation in ukraine which i knew little about. in the future i will not speak of ukraine this way, and will correct anyone who repeats what i said earlier.

Deregulation strikes again.

“Free market” capitalism does NOT care about raging forest fires, it does not care about endangering firefighters, it does not care about people dying due to lack of healthcare insurance. Unregulated capitilism cares only about making profits, apparently at any and all costs.

The word we’re all dancing around here is “extortion” and, frankly, someone needs to go to prison for this. This put lives in danger.

Capitalism is only sustainable through a system of violence and social control

I still have a copy of the t*rget team lead guide to dealing with union activity that I nicked from the office when I worked there, it’s mostly the same stuff but it also revealed just how much of their management tactics were intended to frustrate any unionizing activity. For instance, they said that cross-training in multiple departments was the best way to get reliable hours, and encouraged everyone to do it; according to the manual, however, it was their way of keeping departments mixed up and jumbled, making it impossible for any single department to unionize (and forcing anyone who wanted to unionize to get the entire store to do it).

And that’s just part what the store managers are taught. Throughout, it mentions holding off on action and consulting a labor relations officer in the company on how to proceed. Who knows what kind of shady shit the people a step above do?

They are all very familiar with the anti-union tactics of retail owners and managers, and will have some advice for you, some literature to distribute, and strategies to counter these tactics. It has historically been extremely hard for retail and fast food employees to unionize specifically because the owners and managers keep us scared, disorganized, and are happy to fire us for unionizing, labor laws be damned. Their entire business model hinges on us being overworked and underpaid. Contact a union for help organizing in your store.
