As her whole body started to quiver, a pained smile grew upon her face, and her eyes welled up with tears, Amethyst spoke as quickly as she could, and quietly asked the Princesses for a moment to let her emotions out; and she sighed deeply as she put her head in her hooves, and cried nigh silently, before Nox slowly walked over and sat by her side, hoping her calming presence could ease her mind.
But as Nox started to feel choked up, she realised the aura before her could not help Amethyst, who could not prevent herself from crying, for which she quietly apologised to the Princesses, and some other Pony whose name they could not make out yet; but the Princesses only told Amethyst to take as much time as she needed, for too well they knew the look of devastation that had grown on her face.
Eventually, after she finally managed to calm her breath, Amethyst cleaned her face, and started to apologise to the three, who stopped her but a moment later, and told her she need not tell them any more if she could not handle its memory; but Amethyst merely shook her head, and told the three she had to continue, as she did not want to forget what only she and the missing Crystal Princess knew.
With a graceful nod to the Old Librarian, the Princesses sat down and patiently waited for Amethyst to continue, who sighed deeply, and said she should have noticed that something was wrong; for Star and she had helped many Ponies whose loved ones were turning vile, yet she never noticed that they, too, were hurt, and struggled more so than others, and she blamed herself for not seeing it sooner.
For so many years, she wondered what could have been different if she asked Star even once if there was anything with which she could help them, from just being a listening ear or a shoulder on which they could cry, to reaching out to the Royal Family in their stead, to try to find a solution, even if what worked for every other Pony never worked for them, for reasons that nopony would ever know.
Silence fell in the room once again, until Princess Luna dared to break the silence to ask Amethyst whether, looking back to the time after they got hurt, she noticed anything in Star's behaviour, or their habits, or anything that could have been a sign of their slowly advancing corruption; but she merely shook her head, and told Luna that for days, weeks, months, even, nothing happened, until…
Her eyes grew wide when she remembered, one day, Star told her they would not be able to make it to tea that evening, since they felt they did not have much energy to join her, and they would let the Princess know about this, before they waved her goodbye; but when Amethyst welcomed the Princess to her home a couple of hours later, she asked her where Star was, to her grave concern and confusion.
A moment later, the two left to travel towards Star's home at great haste, shrouded in darkness and cloaked by the night, caring little about being seen by other townsfolk or patrolling Guards, since they needed to know whether Star was alright; when they made it to their home not long after, their aching hearts beating rapidly, they knocked on the door, hoping to see their friend alive and well.
To their great relief, Star opened the door, even if just enough to peek around the door and weakly ask them what it was they wanted, to which Amethyst and the Princess answered they were glad to see them, before they politely asked them why they did not send a scroll to the Princess; but when they saw Star grit their teeth and noticed their eye twitch, they recoiled, knowing something was wrong.
Their voice felt fouler than ever before, yet they still spoke politely to the two, and merely said they forgot, and apologised, before they wished the two a good night and started to close the door; but when they offered to have tea here instead, Star opened the door to show their stained and worn body, and thanked them for their offer in an ice-cold voice, but they refused, and closed the door.
Too well did they know that appearance, Amethyst said, as she continued:
"I know not for how long they had to fight this spreading corruption… But they were so strong…"
