17 they/them aro

PSA: bot comments are taking over ao3

The above examples have been provided with the authors' permission to demonstrate what these look like.

Basic rundown:

  • They are all 3 sentences long
  • Perfect grammar, capitalization, and punctuation
  • Like absolutely flawless English teacher-style writing with only a single exclamation mark, ever
  • No mentions whatsoever of character names, settings, situations, or anything that could be tied to the story
  • The usernames may be identical to people who exist on ao3, but the name is not clickable, and no profile is associated with it EXCEPT when you directly search for that name. What this means: the comments come from an unregistered (not logged in) reader, bots scrape the site for real usernames, attach that to the comment, and post

Please spread the word about this so authors can filter comments and report them accordingly

There has been some speculation about why this is happening at all, and the best guess is that this is a feature that AI-training story-scraping tools are implementing to try and make their browsing traffic look legitimate

I know i complain a lot, but the lack of aro culture in queer spaces is really annoying. no your “aros are valid!” *insert aro flag* posts don’t do it!

aromanticism isnt just about asking for “validity” from others. it’s also not just a hashtag u can put in a pride post that has absolutely nothing about aromanticism.

it sucks that I need to go back to aro spaces to find some quality content. there’s also barely any poc/asian aro-ace content out there that also focuses on aromanticism as a separate thing from asexuality!

this post will still not do anything, I know… but

pride month is almost over, yet aros still exist! include them in your voices, in your minds, in your posts.

anyways reminder that scars of any kind are morally neutral and not bad or harmful to show. if that shit is healed and not a literal open wound it is not fucking bad. it is not okay to shame or trigger warning a normal fucking part of someone’s body, including and especially when it’s a sign of physical or mental illness.

look every single time I make posts like this someone comes on my post like “not self harm scars though! those are triggering!” and fucking. think about what you’re implying for just one second here. you’re saying that if anyone has ever even once hit a mental point where they harmed themself in a way that left a lasting mark they can never show their body uncensored again. this is okay to you? you think this is fucking okay?

also, to expand on this: do not assume you know what are and aren't self harm scars. i have 'traditional self harm scar' looking scars that are not self harm, just that i have a cat and scar easily. i have scars that do not look like self harm scars that very much are. you do not have the right to go up to someone and ask "hey, what are you scars from so i can decide if i can censor your body?", nor the right to assume the origin of someone's scars in order to censor their body. In general, no one's scars or any other part of their body is your business

"don't you mean figuratively"

often, when people use "literally" in exaggerations, linguistic purists "correct" them by saying they "mean figuratively". the common counterargument among Cool Linguists tends to be "well, language is dynamic! words change meaning over time, and the word literally can mean figurativelyǃ’

this counterargument would be good, except that it misses the much more important way in which the linguistic purists complaining about "literally" are wrong.

no, literally doesn't mean figuratively!

in a use like "I literally died when I saw them", the word "literally" is not communicating "oh, by the way, this is a figure of speech". it still means literally! it's a hyperbole, and it's using a word that means "this means exactly what the words appear to mean at face value" as a way of enhancing the hyperbole.

the meaning of the word "literally" doesn't change just because it's being used in this way. it doesn't mean "figuratively"; it means "really" (which, not a coincidence, can also be a synonym for literally in its more technical sense).

what I find amusing about this is that these linguistic purists have latched onto a thing they dislike, but they can't really explain what they don't like about it or even what the thing they dislike means, so their "correction" is just "hey, you should have said the opposite word instead!". it's like if topology pedants saw people say a straw has two holes and corrected them by saying "um, actually, what you meant to say is that a straw has two bumps"
