not cruvus memes

@notcruvusmemes

There is nothing cruvus with me or my (occasional) Stargate memes. Really! // Original work is tagged #notcruvusmemes, but I mostly just reblog sci-fi, humor, cats, writing/fanfic stuff, and whatever else catches my fancy. Mostly SFW but no guarantees, I am an adult. // she/her, aroace, neurodivergent // Side blog: psychologist-daniel (for neurodivergent & mental health memes and posts) // WeShouldRest on AO3

At the poles of Jupiter, enormous cyclones swirl in neat geometric patterns that stay stable for years at a time, a phenomenon that remains unexplained and that scientists have said hints at the need for new physics.

“Since 2017 the Juno spacecraft has observed a cyclone at the north pole of Jupiter surrounded by eight smaller cyclones arranged in a polygonal pattern,” the researchers said in the study. “It is not clear why this configuration is so stable or how it is maintained.”

“The polygons and the individual vortices that comprise them have been stable for the four years since Juno discovered them,” the team added. “The polygonal patterns rotate slowly, or not at all….In contrast, Saturn has only one vortex, a cyclone, at each pole.”

oh its a whole thing

i feel like when talking about the concept of privilege it is meaningful to distinguish "everyone should have this but certain people don't" privilege (e.g supportive parents, relative safety) from "no one should have this but certain people do" privilege (preferential treatment in certain job fields, billions of dollars)

obsessed with the german subreddit called Gittertiere (Lattice Animals) which is dedicated to posting pictures of abandoned shopping carts.

Brave lattice animal is blocking the entry to the nest of a tin-vroomer

Completely over-bred lattice animal. Is this still considered beautiful? … In my opinion, this is lattice animal abuse

This lattice animal is utterly tuckered out from waiting for their play mate

Friend A: "I just realized that this is about attention economy and the new prevalence of attention overwhelm and my mind is blown a little bit."

Friend E: "I saw another meme that compared texting to leaving a card with a request or other message on it with the butler, so the person you wanted to talk to can get back to you later once they're done with whatever they are doing. It makes sense. And isn't that why answering machines and voice-mail were invented? So you could leave your message with a virtual butler?"

Once answering machines became widespread, certain people would call when they knew you weren’t home because they wanted to leave a message on a non-urgent matter and let you take your time to respond. Other people would only call when they knew you were home because they felt entitled to demand your time on any little thing

There were plenty of articles and talk show segments in the 90s with people complaining about people using their answering machines to screen calls while they were home. The complainers didn’t care if they were calling in the middle of dinner, they claimed you were the rude one for not answering the phone

The complaint is basically the same, they’ve just updated it for newer technology

Hobbits vs Cinematography

In the LOTR films there’s always a huge height difference between the tiny hobbit characters and the tall human characters they interact with. This means that a crucial part of any scene’s tone– even if you don’t consciously notice it–  is whether the hobbits are shot in a way that downplays how small they are, or in a way that emphasizes how small they are.

Like: there are two scenes where Frodo (a tiiny hobbit) talks to Boromir (a tall powerful man). In one scene, the film downplays the height difference, and in the other scene, the film emphasizes it.

The first scene is the one where Boromir comforts Frodo after Gandalf’s death. (”You carry a heavy burden– don’t carry the weight of the dead.) The cinematography™ makes you feel like the two of them are equals.

We get medium shots of Frodo sitting on the ground:

And medium shots of Boromir sitting on the ground with him:

The camera angle is neutral….like, we’re not looking up at Boromir, or down at Frodo– we’re looking directly at both of them.

The two characters both take up the same amount of space in the frame– making it feel like they’re basically the same size.

The two of them are sitting on the ground together, while the characters around them are standing. This makes it feel like Boromir is “down on Frodo’s level” in a way that the other characters aren’t.

So we know that Boromir is much taller than Frodo, but in this scene it doesn’t *feel* like he is. It feels like they’re equals, two ordinary people who are going through the same shit, and are equally powerless to stop it.

But the scene where Boromir takes the Ring is the exact opposite!

In this scene, the height difference between the two is emphasized to make Boromir seem threatening.

Remember how the camera angle in the other scene was neutral, so that you were just looking into the character’s eyes? In this scene you’re always looking UP at Boromir, like he’s incredibly tall/standing above you:

And looking dOWN at Frodo, like he’s very tiny:

The environment itself emphasizes the camera angles, which I think is really neat! The scene takes place on a steeply sloping hill. So any time we look up at Boromir, we’re also looking uphill. Anytime we look down on Frodo, we’re also looking downhill.

Frodo is also standing next to that enormous fallen stone statue— which makes him seem even smaller by contrast. The giant statue head behind him makes Frodo feel impossibly tiny…… so small that he’s smaller than a face……….

Also again: in the previous scene, they’re shot so they look like they’re basically the same size in the frame. Boromir doesn’t look that much bigger than Frodo.

But in this scene, Boromir is often put in the foreground while Frodo is in the background….so you get shots like this, where Boromir is a HUGE looming figure in the foreground while while Frodo is a tiny-looking small guy in the background;

This is why the scene feels instantly wrong in a way their previous conversation didn’t.

Even though Boromir begins by saying basically the same thing he did in their previous conversation (”you carry a heavy burden…” “you suffer, I see it day by day…”) it feels threatening this time. You’re deeply aware of how much taller and more powerful Boromir is than Frodo, you really feel the power imbalance between them and you’re instantly aware that Frodo is in danger.

And it’s not just these two scenes that are careful with the cinematography like this? It’s EVERY SINGLE SCENE that involves a hobbit talking to a taller person.

Another obvious example is the opening with Gandalf in the Shire.

In the early scenes, Gandalf is supposed to feel like a harmless hobbit friend who is basically One of the Hobbits. So he’s always stooping down, or kneeling, or sitting down, and the camera angle is almost always neutral.

We know he’s bigger than the hobbits, but it doesn’t feel that way, because the height difference is being downplayed.

But then he gets angry at Bilbo– and CINEMATOGRAPHY SHIFT

The camera is angled UP at Gandalf, and DOWN at Bilbo…Gandalf is giant in the foreground, while Bilbo is tiny and in the background….for the first time in the film, we actually realize how much bigger Gandalf is than the hobbits.

But then another cinematography shift! As Gandalf reminds Bilbo of their friendship, the camera angle becomes neutral again, and Gandalf is down on Bilbo’s level again:

TL;DR

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it: most major tone shifts in Lord of the Rings generally involve switching from one mode of shooting the height difference to the other.

When a likeable tall character becomes threatening to the hobbits, the film switches from downplaying the height difference to emphasizing it.

When an intimidating tall character becomes friendly, the film switches from emphasizing the height difference to downplaying it.

Frodo: Sam hates Gollum, but that is what I shall become once I have lost myself to the ring… he’ll despise me…

Sam if Frodo did turn into a Gollum: That’s a very nice fish you caught with your bare hands, Mr. Frodo, and its very smart of you to eat it raw, saves us the trouble of starting a fire. I knitted you a sweater in case you get cold running around in that loincloth of yours. Is the sun hurting your eyes? I’ll kill it if it’s bothering you. I’ll kill the sun

someone: prohibition in the united states was largely ineffective, cost millions, tried to force a religious belief on the entire country, only ever resulted in the increase in consumption of alcohol, as well as the increase in police violence, and ultimately failed

people: okay yeah that’s true

someone: the war on drugs is the exact same thing except this time because of the militarization of the police and private prison interests, is much, much more deadly and specifically exists to justify and widely reinstate slavery within the united states

people: what? but drugs are #bad, and we can’t let people use them. obviously this is the only way to deal with this situation

It’s my opinion that like if a white supremacist/Nazi is going to be reformed. They need to do so willingly. The only times I’ve heard of successful rehabilitation of fascists is when they made the conscious decision to no longer be one anymore and seek atonement. People who try to like hug and change fascists that don’t want to change are fucking morons

Correct. I was crypto-facist for a few years, and the people trying to hug me didnt change me because at that point I wouldnt have listened. It was only when I started to see the movement for what it was that I was finally able to listen.

I’m not derailing your addition but I’m horrified you’re only 18. When did you become a fasc?

Yeah trust me it *is* horrifying. I’m ashamed of who I was and I think my only atonement is to talk about how damn easy it is to become one when you’re young.

This is gonna be a long post.

For a little bit of background, I am a mixed race person, half brown and half white. I was raised in a Muslim family and am still closeted around them.

I started to have issues with Islam at around 12 or so, when I first started to get the idea that I might be gay. Now I never would have admitted that was my reason. If you had asked me I probably would have said “logic” or something. Because of that I went hard into atheism and atheist circles.

Now people hate to admit this but ex-Muslim spaces are predominantly right wing. Ex-Muslims often see the left as “too tolerant” towards a religion that hurt them. This was the only community I had though, and I read through everything. I was 13.

The other thing that people hate to admit is that, especially when you’re young, being mixed race is so damn hard. If I acted “too white”, following my mother’s German/Austrian traditions, I was accused of hiding my true nature. But if I acted “too brown” I was just another camel jockey. So I hid my “Indian” customs from others and tried passing as white. Especially online.

So I’m not saying this is all youtube’s fault or anything. I was raised to believe that the brown half of my family was lesser and stupid. And with my hatred of Islam, I believed it doubly.

Then came Anita Sarkeesian. I was watching pewdiepie and from there my recommendations were all set. If I’m remembering the pipeline it was pewdiepie - Philip Defranco - Chris Ray Gun (sp?) - Thunderfoot - Sargon - etc. But I was pretty much acquainted with all of the right wing youtube of the day.

Funnily enough, I found her through Thunderfoot. That got me into antifeminism, and more specifically, GamerGate.

I was primarily on the subreddits KIA (Kotaku In Action) and TIA (Tumblr In Action). Both made fun of the SJWs. I kid you not, I would gleefully wait for “Sanity Sunday”, where the people would talk about how feminism is disgusting, cultural appropriation is fake, the wage gap isnt real, etc. I would scroll through this tag for hours.

I got most of my youtube recommendations from those subreddits. This led me from GamerGate to more fascist lines of thinking, such as watching videos about why BLM is a terrorist organization, why all muslims were evil rapists, and why I was fundamentally right to reject my Indian heritage and follow my “correct” heritage.

From here I delved into “race realism”, and I believed it all. I had to. This was the only community I had felt safe in. One of the fash guys even offered to shack me up at his house if my parents kicked me out for being atheist. I was 15.

To say that again, I was 15 and believed that white was right, blue lives matter, “we wuz kangs”, etc. I never would have called myself a fascist or a Nazi. How could I? I used my brown skin as a token, so that people could point to me and say: “See, we aren’t misogynistic and racist! We have this brown girl right here.” But I believed in all the things the Nazis did. I’m not going to pretend I didn’t. I will never pretend I didn’t.

But then something happened. I admitted to myself, and to a few others, that I was gay. And suddenly, the homophobia that I had molded myself in, it didn’t fit right. I happened to, by accident, click on the reddit thread of GamerGhazi, the opposition to GamerGate. And after a long bout of introspection I found out that they were accepting of gay people, that the things I had been experiencing were common, that maybe, just maybe, we didn’t need a white ethnostate.

I don’t want to be dramatic but that accidental click saved my life.

From there it was a road of recovery. I deleted all my old accounts, made new ones, and started to read leftist theory. I found better friends, cut out old people. So now, just about two years later, I’m healing.

I think that’s everything. I probably got some times and dates wrong because I’ve been trying to move on from it. But if you need more info or anything like that, please let me know.

Reblogging for anyone who’s struggling with being an ex-fascist. Feel free to message me as well, I know how scary it can be.

Reblogging because, if this shows up often enough, maybe it will be someone else’s accidental click

slides im sharing w my family this week bc it pains me to see how they manage their passwords. and also easy steps they can take to protect their privacy (firefox mainly). if u have any questions let me know.

also. uBlock origin is better than adblock plus bc: it allows NO ADS (ABP will allow certain ads and let bigger companies thru - its "acceptable ads" program) + is more lightweight and easier on your computer's resources than ABP.

im seeing a pick up in rbs for this -- a new and pertinent addition is that chrome is planning to switch from manifest v2 to manifest v3 soon. this means ad blockers will no longer work in chrome.

switch to firefox if you want to preserve your ad blocking abilities and your data privacy!!
