The beautiful owl sprite animation from the 1992 Psygnosis game, Agony.
I love that Nintendo is celebrating Pokemon’s 20th birthday and it’s incredible that they have updated the original Game Boy games with the ability to trade and battle online using the 3ds, but you might be surprised to hear that that’s not as new of a feature as you may think.
Back in 2001, Nintendo released a little device called the Mobile Adapter GB. It was a cable that would on one end, plug into your Game Boy and on the other, plug into your cell phone. The Game Boy would then be able to use the cellular network to let you play your games online. It worked with very few games but Pokemon WAS one of them!
This little gadget made the Game Boy one of the first online compatible systems. You probably have never heard of it because it was only released in Japan and even there, the service was only available for just under two years.
At first glance this may look like a Gameboy you used to have but I promise you it’s quite different.
This was given away to the winner of a drawing put on by a Japanese company, Koro Koro Comics in honor of their 250th magazine issue. The magazine is geared towards children. It frequently includes articles related to Pokemon which explains the Pikachu. There is very little information out there about this edition but, it is believed that this is the only one in existence.
