red flags in the heathen community
we all love having an online community to share our faith and practice with as well as online resources to go to however it can be hard to know if these resources are trustworthy or inclusive,,, these are some things i stay away from or are caution when i see.
1. folkish: a folkist is just a white supremacist from what i’ve seen,,, ocean keltoi and aliakai on youtube both have great videos explaining what folkism is and why it’s harmful
2. promoting stephen mcnallen: stephen mcnallen is a white supremacist that is working to “protect the white family and increase white numbers” so obviously his interpretations of the myths and gods are going to be drenched in racism and bigotry,,, he’s also the founder of the AFA or the asatru folk assembly
3. the asatru folk assembly: the asatru folk assembly is a white supremacist organization that uses norse paganism and nazi germany’s use of the gods to excuse it,,, i hope it’s clear that if someone denounces the AFA they’re most likely not going to hold any other bigoted values,, not everyone is going to talk abt it but i’d say if they’re not going to make it clear they don’t support those ‘values’ maybe be cautious of them
4. declaration 127: declaration 127 is a declaration claiming that any organization that signs is against the teachings and values of the AFA the problem lies when other pagans call it ‘controlling’ and ‘dividing’ now obviously not everyone is going to be talking abt but if you see someone talk abt it and they don’t seem to see the point i would take that as a red flag ((also you can google declaration 127 and read it for yourself as well))
i’m only going to recommend youtube channels bc that’s what i use most however all the points above could easily be applied on tumblr, insta, twitter or wherever else you go for your community
* ocean keltoi: i’ve mentioned him already and he’s amazing,, he more so talks abt being a polytheist and uses his faith as examples,, breaks down common words like frith and grith as well as having helpful videos talking abt pagan prayer and ways to practice your faith
* aliakai: she’s a hellenist but her videos are amazing as well she talks abt a number of things like current things going on in the world and in the pagan community,, explains green myths,, and has a good video on worshiping and practicing in the broom closet,,, she’s absolutely wonderful
* jackson crawford: if you’ve been in the norse pagan community for a bit you know everyone loves his videos bc they’re super informative and id also highly suggest his books the only thing i don’t like is his videos are a bit dry for my taste but if you can sit and pretty much listen to a lecture he’s a wonderful resource
* arith härger: his videos are long and informational and he has a broad variety on different aspects of history, pagan traditions, the gods etc
* scarlet ravenswood: she’s great for general pagan topics as she doesn’t just focus on heathenry which can be great if you wanna add more ideas into your practice
* chaotic witch aunt: she’s a witch so if you’re into witchcraft she’s amazing and also has some videos abt general deity work again if you wanna broaden your practice and add something new into your worship
i hope this was helpful and made navigating the online pagan community and who to stay away from easier
