nordic prehistory and history parody

@norsesuggestions / norsesuggestions.tumblr.com

Just having that prehistorical nordic groove of being way too into throwing silver into swamps.  the character Helga mostly exist on the east coast of scandinavia during the iron age. but also have tendency to time travel all over the place in nordic history. the admin of the blog can't stop sharing lgbtq history facts tho.

The Kettle has arrived! We must flee!

Talking about historical case endings

Looking at a list were they show grammatical cases of old norse of the word "kittel" (kettle)

I realised that Katla, a icelandic vulcano, but for swedes much more known as the name of the scary dragon in Brothers Lionheart

Her name just translate to "kettle"

Beware the dangerous dragon,

Kettle!

[there is a party in the cave of Katla, and you are invented - greetings Tengil]

PS. Looked up and yes, Katla name really translate to kettle. It a reference to the shape of the vulcano.

Katla the dragon, the terror of many a swedes childhoods, was named after the vulcano Katla. People who rebell against Tengil are fed to Katla in the book]

I am just saying considered the actor is actually screaming

"the kettle is here! Retreat!"

Makes this scene feel somewhat less scary. Someone should have told child me this... This scene. I was so scared of it

tbf katla is a pretty scary volcano

True. There was actually a swedish article that pointed this out in a headline when i googled this

It was like

"Katla is actually very dangerous, the vulcano Katla that is"

Best thing with the dragon Katla

The wings? Whats even up with those? Like, that some vestigal wings!

Like what is Katla gonna do with those wings? Fly? Hardly.

The other best thing with Katla is how obviously she is made of paper when you watch the movie scene

Third best is her very bad fake fire effect

Katla doing a big fire

Ah beautiful. That looks perfectly natural, special effects team of 1977 Brother Lionheart movie production

‘Scuse you that was very scary!

(this is a film children in Sweden would watch at least once a year because every year television would air all the Astrid Lindgren (children’s author) films)

I agree. I never dared to even look at the screen when katla was in the scene. Hid underneath a pillow to not be seen by the katla-threat

nils dardel painted the most expansive painting to ever be sold in sweden (well at least it had the record in the 1980s sweden). it is named “the dying dandy”, painted in 1918, and yes, the picture is as gay as it sounds.

will make post about it later!

it was sold too, in the middle of both the hiv/aids crisis in sweden AND while speculation on art was gotten out of controll. so it also became very symbolic of its time, when it was sold for a record breaking amount in the 1980s.

add on!

it was sold for 13 million kronor back in the 1980s. that is, still today an extreme amount. that amount most have been even more absurdly high, back in the swedish 1980s

i never remember to tell the full story of nils dardels paintings “the dying dandy”, and in this post i wont either BUT

i will show you the painting, so one can know how this painting, which was a  Crucial Symbolic Moment In Swedish LGBTQ History, looked like

yes, this painting is just as gay as it looks like. that is the dying dudes boyfriend crying in the background. and painter was himself hella queer (bisexual to be exact) and knew exactly what he was doing when he painted this

I love this painting, it is so openly melodramatic and self-aware. The dying dandy isnt face up, head back like a sexy preraphaelite death, he is doing a downward smirk while clutching his man-tit with a creepy crab-like hand, basking in the attention and not giving a shit about traumatising his close ones. We are looking at a real bastard here. The main character of the painting is framed by sympathy, but it doesnt reach the viewer.

Olaus Magnus also shares his political arson plans to the world, in this oddly cute illustration, considering its topic

Title: about how one light oppressive lords forts on fire

How very. Medieval sweden of you Olaus Magnus.

Twf when you are just DONE with your local fogde, and decides it is time for some politically motivated arson

Just some nordic pals, about to burn down some local lords house, because they be mad, circa at some point before 1555.

This Eurasian red squirrel/ekorre used to live in a tree in the garden but moved some time ago (squirrels often have several nests). That doesn’t stop him from visiting every day. I’ve kept track on him for well over a year by now and he feels like family. Värmland, Sweden (June 22, 2023).

It is 28+ c and i work in a store with zero ac. Also, not really any.... ventilation in warm weather

I am being boiled at work. It is funny going outside, but because it is like "ah 28 c" when going out the door from whatever hellscape humid temps there are inside the store

Tried to figure out this entire "humid" heat thing people keep talking about in relation to sweden. That is, if sweden has a humid climate or not

I got.... no conclusive answer. There was alot of jargong and i am now confused

(I think the answer is high air humidity but idk tbh)

I also learned that the air humidity in february in sweden is often 80%. Is just dont feel like that, because the indoor air gets dry when it heated up indoors

(Simplified)

(When i say that swedish indoors feel dry in winter i mean like. Lips cracking, dry rashes developing etc. Like, winter makes many, me included, get dry enough skin it is a legit problem. Beyond like. The look of it)

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics

I see you over there, Victor Hugo.

So I made a political compass featuring kända svenska TV-gubbar and honestly it might be one of the best things I’ve ever made.

but my faves are in the squares in which i am not?

It is a demonstration of the complexity of man; we all host these gubbar within us whether we’d like it or not.

Sometimes you need to embrace life like Ernst, or you need the cold pragmaticism of G.W. to get your life in order, or the clear political voice of Göran. And sometimes festar man och då festar man rejält.
