i loved the new spiderppl from atsv just as much as the next guy but can we hear some commotion for miles morales. can we hear some commotion for main character miles morales who is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. who was going to study at princeton just for a chance to see his friends. who juggles saving the city and his grades and his family’s expectations and the feeling that he’s maybe not quite good enough. who was prepared to fight time and space just to save his dad. brooklyn’s one and only spiderman miles morales. rio’s brave little boy miles morales. can we hear some commotion for him

sorry 2 spider Gwen but why the hell would you call ur friends parents by their first names if you haven't even been INTRODUCED to them yet.... you start with "omg hi Mr. & Mrs. Morales" and then MAYBE the parents go "oh no, call me Jeff" and you call them that. You don't OPEN with Jeff...... girlie you're embarrassing me.... where is your inherited irish catholic guilt complex that makes you overly polite

i've been thinking about hobie spiderverse since i came out of the movie theater, about how on a superficial level he acts like every other stereotypically alt character, stealing and instigating and bantering and being chaotic and rebellious and looking Cool™ but on a second look it's so so clear that every single thing he does is motivated by kindness and compassion towards his friends in general and miles in particular, and that's so viscerally truly punk of him

the already famous palm suggestion that makes miles break out of miguel's containment thing. miles initially reads this as condescending but hobie's genuinely trying to help

already he's looking out for miles by trying to keep him away from hq, a place where he knows miles isn't welcome and might be in danger

now, they get to hq and he immediately starts lifting stuff to homebrew a watch for miles, a guy he's known for five minutes (bc you can't convince me he didn't already have a bunch prepped for gwen and the other spider-people he trusts). he even lampshades it with the line above.

he's questioned miles' motives to join the spider society and he knows they're the same as his own: it's literally just to get a watch, to have a means to travel dimentions, to see his friends, to build community. he's already made the decision to grant that ability to miles without subjugating him to the oppressive restrictions and requirements of the spider society. at this point we know he's strongly ideologically opposed to the society and he later in this scene admits he's only there to look out for gwen, just like miles

this one makes me insane. it's a "are you safe at home in your dimension? do you have one? do you need a place to stay?" bc we know he's given one to gwen, who's not safe and does not have nice parents and has been crashing in hobie's dimension for the previous months

and then he tries again to warn miles off the spider society

and when push comes to shove and all the other spider-people are set on stopping miles from going home and changing his timeline he's the only one in miles' corner

btw notice how the palms thing is the first and last thing he says to miles in this film?

anyway. he was in this movie for like 15 minutes tops, showed up exclusively to hype up his friends and protect them by whatever means necessary, adoption papers and illegal interdimensional tech included, and he looked that cool the whole time while doing it. most character ever.

Nimona is a movie coming out tomorrow, June 30th that’s been 7 years in the making! It’s based off the tumblr webcomic turned best-selling graphic novel of the same title.

It was originally being made by Blue Sky Studios and was going to have a theatrical release aimed around 2021, but after Disney acquired them and shut the studio down the film was scrapped. The movie was only about 10 months away from being finished, and it was shut down after Disney execs had pushed back against the queer themes/characters in the movie. BUT, Annapurna studios picked the film back up and finished it!!

Onto the film itself!

The movie follows Nimona, a spunky shapeshifter who teams up with the knight Ballister Boldheart (previously Ballister Blackheart in the graphic novel) after he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and sent on the run. His ex-boyfriend, Ambrosius Goldenloin, is tasked with hunting them down, but is conflicted between fulfilling his duty and his feelings.

The animation style is stunning and dynamic, and the visuals are so so good!! I would highly recommend checking out the movie and supporting it when it comes out, this is a big step for stylized animation and also queer rep in animation as well!

But the best part is that it just looks like an amazing movie!!

NO BUT IMAGINE-

The theater is dark, the credits are rolling, then Reader's voice fills the theater, slowly the screen fades to show a sky view of new york,

"Life was different after the invasion."

The camera pans around to show construction everywhere, building being rebuilt and such,

"We won. The Kraang were stopped, and the world was saved."

Slowly the camera fades from the city to move underground into the Lair,

"But even then. The city needed to heal, and so did we. It took... time. Alot of time. But, in the end, we have our family."

"There were a few noteable things that happened after the invasion, so lets talk about those for a minute."

THEN IT FADES INTO THE EXTRAS-

Lets settle this age old argument,

NOOOO BECAUSE WHY IT FEEL LIKE IM ACTUALLY THERE, WATCHING THIS, IN THE THEATER JSAKJHJHDS

like a "yup, that's me. you're probably wondering how i got into this situation!" moment, and it's a capture frame of our yokai's face right when they get their world rocked, then it pans to reader screeching and tackling them to the ground, expression absolutely wild-

absolute silence. a swell of tense music right as the camera zooms in on reader's face, head resting on the table while Leo runs their back and they themselves are trying to staunch their migraine; as the background noise in the restaurant becomes fuzzy before fading out entirely to that high-pitched ringing sound you get in your ears- you can see them slipping into their warrior mode- then everything comes to a crescendo right when the yokai shoves leo, and your eyes snap open.

your narration sounds over the scene:

"yeah, i know i promised i wouldn't be reckless anymore. broken promises or whatever.

"but the guy was asking for it, wasn't he?"

*cue to frames rapidly changing to reader's Almighty Punch THEN the insane sequence of Beatdown follows.

(then you watch the bts and it's reader spilling over multiple apologies while sobbing and hugging the yokai, who's laughing at how darned precious reader is and patting their back in comfort while also holding an ice pack to their face because ohohoo you thought that punch was Fake?? snskksnsksk)
