The semi-professional tumblr presence of Alexandra Edwards.
As a lumberjack I’m not very good. When everyone else is sleeping, I sneak into the woods. I pull up the trees with my strong lumberjack arms & carry them somewhere else, where they can’t be harmed. The other lumberjacks are beginning to grow angry,

Dalton Day, “Lumberjack II,” published in Twelfth House (via bostonpoetryslam)

Long before there was the Internet, there was the commonplace book — a creative and intellectual ledger of fragmentary inspirations, which a writer would collect from other books and copy into a notebook, often alongside his or her reflections and riffs. These borrowed ideas are in dialogue with the writer’s own imagination and foment it into original thinking. Over long enough a period of time — years, decades, often a lifetime — the commonplace book, while composed primarily of copied passages, comes to radiate the singular sensibility of its keeper: beliefs are refined, ideas incubated, intellectual fixations fleshed out, and the outlines of a personhood revealed… Partway between medieval florilegium and modern-day Tumblr, the commonplace book has been particularly beloved by poets.

Jamie Clayton Appreciation Post

Today is #TransgenderDayOfVisibility, and I find myself recalling “Dirty Work” and working with the amazing Jamie Clayton.

As part of the initial writing team that developed the show, I was the one who pitched the idea of making one of the three leads transgender.  (If memory serves, @MaureenMcQ had been writing something else that had her researching a lot about transitioning, and specifically the financial costs associated with it, which inspired me to suggest we incorporate that into the show.) Which is how the character of Michelle was born.

We patted ourselves on our backs for how inclusive we were being, but honestly at that stage Michelle was the epitome of a token – all of her stories were about being trans, and there were many, many jokes constructed around that and nothing else.

So the author of this article doesn’t see much of a distinction between a love triangle and a threesome…guess I missed that scene in Twilight where Edward and Jacob put aside their *ahem* differences for the sake of a little ménage à trois.

Don’t worry Sam, looks like you’re not the only one with threesome-confusion.

Haha, looks like nonmodernist was anticipating the zeitgeist with this joke! (If you’ve missed our Musica Mundana spinoff, you can start here!)

what can i say, i spend a lot of time thinking about threesomes

Let’s talk about “Dona Moça”

Hi, people

Nice to meet you all, I’m Jacqueline Viana and I’m one of the co-creators, assistant writer and transmedia producer of “Dona Moça”. If you don’t know what is “Dona Moça”, let me explain it: it’s a Brazilian webseries adapted from José de Alencar’s “Senhora”, published in 1875. “Senhora” is as important for us Brazilians as “Pride and Prejudice is for British and Americans. José de Alencar is not our greatest writer, but he’s definetely one of the best.

Just as many webshows, we’re heavily inspired by Pemberley Digital’s work, such as Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Emma Approved. Of course, “Dona Moça” is not the first brazilian webseries, but it is the first one in our country with the “modern literary adaptation / transmedia storytelling” approach. Oh, and don’t worry if you can’t understand Portuguese. We provide English captions for those interested in watching it. Hopefully, we’ll be able to translate all the transmedia events on Twitter, Wordpress and Instragram too, but this might take a little more time. If you’re not Brazilian and already watch our TV show, wow! Thank you so much for taking your time and watching it! We couldn’t even imagine how far we would reach when we decided to provide those captions. Please continue talking about it here on tumblr, or comment on our videos. Give us your opinion on it. Tell us where we can improve, where to stop, where to continue. We’re starters here, so any type of feedback is pure gold for us!

I don’t know if you’ve seen, but we’re currently finishing our first season. These first ten episodes where based upon the first part of “Senhora” (the book is divided in four sections, but I promise to present you foreigners with a special video talking about the book so you can follow the show without a lot of doubts). We have just started our crowdfunding campaign on Kickante. Believe it or not, this first season was produced with about 500 reais taken from our own savings (approximately 158 dolars). The money was spent mostly in structure, rental of equipments and payment for our actors. Everybody from both the creative and production team worked for free, mostly because everybody believed in this project and wanted to create something far different from what’s being done so far in entertainment in our country. You can learn a little more about us at the following video (with captions in English, as usual):

We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to reach so far with so little. We’re asking for this money in order to improve our production values and the payment for our actors and actresses. One of the main reasons we chose Kickante is that it’s one of the very few crowdfunding sites that allows donation from other countries and also because we’re able to keep whatever money we get, despite the fact of reaching or not our goal. Larissa, one of our co-producers, is currently writing a  translation of our campaign text, so you can know how we’re going to use the money and the perks available. If you’re really interested in funding us, please contact us on our twitter account and we’ll provide a very special delivery for you.

Anonymous asked:

Hey, you guys were talking about a spinoff. Is that happening??? Who's it about?

Hey there!

Great question - I haven’t heard much from the fan base about this, actually, so I’m glad it’s still active! I don’t think you guys actually got much in the way of information about the spinoff to begin with? Some basics: Alexandra Edwards wrote it, it focuses on Cara & Lily and their adventures in Los Angeles over the summer, and it was six episodes long. Alex & I have continued to workshop the scripts a little bit, just in case the planets align properly.

Some background…

The lovely, Emmy-winning Alexandra Edwards - nonmodernist - approached me during our IndieGoGo campaign and asked if I was open to her writing something for the show, or being somehow a part of it. This was a huge no brainer for me! So I said absolutely and she pitched me a plotline.

I loved the idea of having an expanded world with a beloved character, but the biggest issue was money. We were inching toward our goal but we weren’t quite there and I decided to make a hard line in the sand: if we didn’t make the goal on IndieGoGo (indep. of any investors we might find), we can’t do an extra set of filming – we just couldn’t. Alexandra said sure and offered to write it anyway.

A few weeks later, I had some amazing scripts in hand and … we didn’t hit our goal, so I put the whole thing kind of out of mind because I had a crap load of work to do for the main show. I still liked the project enough to want to keep playing with it, but as chatter dwindled & I, sadly, moved away from it.

The ‘spinoff plotline’ will definitely live on via Twitter with Cara, Lily, and a new character, so it was good that Alex & I workshopped the scripts and did revisions. But since I’m not sure how much interest there is in it & our budget might be just about out, I don’t think it’s going to happen. Maybe I’m wrong. Would it be a good idea for you guys to chime in? Maybe a #CASpinoff tag? I just don’t know the interest anymore!

!!!! Cara and Lily!

Cara and Lily!!!!

Obviously I’m immensely biased, since I wrote the dang thing, BUT hear me out, dear CA fans.

One thing I am always, always pushing for on the shows I work on is more queer characters with standalone stories. I pitched a queer storyline for Welcome to Sanditon that didn’t end up working because we changed direction with that piece of the show. I have asked for specifically queer representation on many other projects I’ve worked on, some of which are still in development and go forward with my explicit emphasis on the importance of queer characters.

So when I was offered the chance to write a Cara/Lily storyline, I was beyond thrilled! Kate and I agreed on one very specific rule: their relationship couldn’t be exploited or stereotyped. Neither of us wanted to make a story about them being gay. They’re gay, and they deserved a story, but the former couldn’t just be a gimmick for the latter.

I wrote them, instead, a story about the summer and the very specific places they’re at in their lives right now. I wrote them something that felt meaningful to me, and that dealt with their established relationship and how they experience that. This is very much not a story like Alice and Andrew’s—because college-aged kids don’t just fall in love and have first kisses. They also have 90th kisses. They also work and play and try to figure out their lives. They go places and see how other people live, and they succeed at life stuff and they don’t succeed at life stuff and they keep on having to relate to other people through all of that.

It would make me so, so happy to see Cara and Lily’s story play out onscreen. I think you’ll enjoy it—this little window on the lives of two really great characters, who also happen to be living a queer love story.

Hi gang,

In advance of our new series launching this afternoon, I wanted to delve a little deeper into it. As you’ll see, it’s very different from Carmilla in a lot of ways - not only are more partners involved, but I would say it definitely leans more towards broadcast than niche. We got to try so many things that we’ll incorporate in Carmilla S2 - in world camera moves, different style of YouTube cutting, depth in our one-shot, and other ~sekrit lessons. It was enlightening to work for the second time on a vlog series, and I can’t wait to take the best of (MsLabelled) to Carm S2.

the first six eps are here: http://bit.ly/MsLabelled_Playlist

(And before you ask…we have been working hard on Carmilla S2. I could troll on and on about SO MANY THINGS, but am under strict orders not to release anything. If that helps. ;) )

Is it gay? Not really. Not in a central way. That said, me being me, expect queer ladies. Once again, exploring sexual identity is not at the forefront of any storyline. Here, you’ll see it’s probably a terrible idea to date someone who may or may not have seen your designs……

Who’s in this thing? As I mentioned awhile back, going union opens the door to good POC talent in the city. MsLabelled is an ACTRA show, and we set the goal for our cast to be at least 50% non white. Let me introduce you to these lovely biddies:

Barbara Mamabolo  as Rumi

(You may recognize her as she was Jewel Staite & David Hewlett’s co lead in our weird little State of Syn series) Barbara Mamabolo is a Toronto actor and musician. Selected film and television credits include Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Instant Star, Beautiful People, the Britney Spears-produced MOW Brave New Girl, and three seasons as the title character in the series Zixx. In addition to acting, Barbara is the lead singer of the Toronto R&B/rock band Mamabolo. Their debut album “Falling to Pieces” came out in 2011 and was supported by a tour with Men without Hats. Barbara acted in, wrote music and sang in the cult rock and roll movie Suck, which also featured legendary rock stars Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and Henry Rollins.

Nykeem Provo as Luke.

Nykeem comes from a talented family who explored all different arts, mainly music and dance. Nykeem has also spent a lot of time walking the runways, and modeling for various campaigns. Nykeem is currently working on a new TV series for Disney, SportsLab, and has many more projects in the works. (You may have seen him in the Teenagers webseries as well)

Richard Young as Percy.

Richard Young is an actor/writer/butterscotch enthusiast who has appeared on Rookie Blue, Saving Hope, Degrassi and Mayday. Most recently, he co-created/starred in the OMNI TV Kung Fu digital series Sudden Master (funded by Bell Media) airing in summer 2015. He also created/starred in two seasons of the digital series Off2Kali Comedy which featured actors such as Colin Mochrie (Whose Line Is It Anyway?), Huse Madhavji (Saving Hope) and Katie Boland (Reign, Long Story Short).

Alanna as Xander Vintage (playing a version of herself.)

Alanna aka Xander Vintage, has worked with a variety of brands, including Betsey Johnson, Gypsy WarriorxPacsun, Shelly’s London, Smashbox, and Clearly Contacts. She has been featured in publications, such as Seventeen Magazine, Refinery29, Candy Magazine,New York Magazine and Company Magazine.

Shawn Ahmed as Gus.

Most recently, Shawn’s been seen in Saw VI, Flight 93 (A&E), and The Tracey Fragments directed by Bruce MacDonald, Far Cry 4 (Ubisoft), the TV series Odd Squad (PBS), the upcoming feature film A Date With Miss Fortune (dir. John L’Ecuyer) and on the web series The Bunch Gang Show, Ryan Gosling Must Be Stopped. Shawn’s success on stage includes working with The Tarragon Theatre (And Slowly Beauty…), Driftwood Theatre (Macbeth) and at the historic Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts (The Comedy of Errors, Revolutionary Moments, More Words! More Play! And The Winters Tale).

And the rest of our biddies! We’ve got

Rebecca Liddiard as Ella.  Rebecca was actually one of the first people I ever thought could play Laura back when we were developing. I’ve seen her on stage awhile back and knew we would cast her at some point. She’s just that good.

A graduate of Ryerson University’s Theatre Performance program, she has taken principal roles on such programs as Discovery Channel’s Karma’s a B, CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries, Man Seeking Woman by FX Productions and the feature film Highly Functional. Upcoming projects include her first major role in the highly anticipated Rogers/Netflix coproduction of the original drama miniseries Between, premiering Spring 2015 on CityTV. Rebecca is also a proud member, supporter and contributor to Toronto’s theatre scene. A highlight performance took her to Greece where she studied classical performance while simultaneously rehearsing lead roles in premier productions by Judith Thompson and Valina Hasu-Houston

Sydney Kondruss as the mute, goth designer Janice. CARMILLA Trivia: she was non-union back when we shot S1, and we invited her to the callbacks along with Natasha - as our useless lesbian vampire - but she had a scheduling conflict and couldn’t make it. Dun dun dun…

Sara Hennessey as Anna. I LOVE SARA HENNESSEY, SHE IS HILARIOUS.

Sara is the 2013 Canadian Comedy Award (CCA) winner for The Best Female Stand Up Comic in Canada. Sara is also a two-time CCA nominee; for her web-series Goodbye Sara Hennessey and short film Secret Clubhouse. With regular appearances on Much/Fuse TV’s Video On Trial, Sara is also a member of the acclaimed Toronto comedy collective Laugh Sabbath, and is one-half of the comedy duo Terrific Women. Sara has extensive comedy writing experience, not only her own film projects and stand-up, but also on CTV’s Spun Out starring Dave Foley, CityTV’s sketch show Sunnyside and CBC comedy website, Punchline. Sara has been featured in various other festivals, including NXNE, Boston Comedy Festival, Halifax Pop Explosion, Cottage Country Comedy Festival, San Francisco Sketch Fest.

Marni Van Dyk as Bee. Equally hilar. Check out this short she was in that Jill Soloway and Lena Dunham talked about: https://vimeo.com/117976281

Adamo Ruggiero as Duke, whom you may recognize if you watched Degrassi…#cdnactorbingo

Last but not least, we had the extreme pleasure of working with director Zoe Robyn to helm the project. Zoe’s basically a wonderkind: she’s directed a multitude of short films, commercials, done second unit for Syfy’s Helix, is developing two shows for broadcasters. Oh, and she’s 24. Rockstar? Yeah.

So with me (producer), alexandra (writing), zoe (directing), mel (line producing), jill (prod coordinating) and danielle (production designing), jess (costume designing) marissa (make up & hair) we ended up (almost unintentionally) with a SUPER CREW of ladies. A+++

so the gist of this is…hope you watch it, so we can make more shows. (And even more shows in the vein of Carmilla.)
