Good morning

hey everyone trying to not make this a huge novel so gonna just hit the points. I was able to extend my car rental for work with my last paycheck at the beginning of the month but is due back by noon tomorrow unless I extend the rental. for those who don’t follow me, I’ve had an incredibly difficult time (mom and dad both died, had Covid which caused long term effects w my heart, then was slammed into by someone going 50 and they broke my leg, back, chipped multiple teeth and totaled my car). Ubers to and from work are between $45-$60 a day, and that’s not including appointments for my cardiologist, orthopedic, primary care, therapy, and just necessities like grocery shopping.

It’s incredibly hard and embarrassing to have to ask for help like this but i don’t have any family to ask for help and am working through all this but with only my income it’s been incredibly difficult to afford everything and I don’t have any other options. If you’d like proof or anything like that to be sure please reach out to me, I know everyone is usually surprised to hear that things have been so crazy since mom and dad died but it’s true. Anyway, since I have been getting my rentals through the same place since the accident they have been assisting with the price a lot, and I can get the rental extended another two weeks for $560, which is almost half the normal price. Forcing schools to out students six weeks after learning about their sexual orientation puts LGBTQ+ youth in danger. Florida schools should be a place where kids feel supported, not scared. 

This bill already required schools to inform families that their children identify as LGBTQ+ upon coming out. Outing students was not a requirement when believed that doing so might lead to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. With this amendment, there is no longer a way around it.

This bill will force children to hide who they are in fear of being outed. Our youth will be at an even greater risk of abuse, neglect, and even homelessness. This bill is dangerous for LGBTQ+ students and harmful to education.

Florida’s Don’t Say Gay amendment is not okay. Do better, Ron DeSantis.

The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs Company (MCCPDC) is a registered pharmaceutical wholesaler and purchases drugs directly from manufacturers, bypassing middlemen to lower the price of more than 100 medications, it said in a statement.

MCCPDC CEO Alex Oshmyansky reached out to Cuban with an idea for a low-cost generic drug company in a cold email. It was launched in January last year. They were motivated in part by “Pharma Bro” Martin Shrkeli’s outrage-producing price hike of the lifesaving drug Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 per tablet while Shrkeli was CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals. Cuban told Forbes last year the pricing for generic drugs was “ridiculous.” He said he decided to put his name on the company to “show capitalism can be compassionate and to send the message I am all in.” It’s not clear how much he had invested in the company.

It is true. Mark Cuban is doing this in part because he wants to run for President in 2024 if Biden doesn’t run again (Mark ran in 2020). He’s a Democrat and “I personally made medication affordable” will give him an immense edge. He’s far from perfect but this is a good thing he’s doing. Also he seems to genuinely believe this stuff, but either way, site’s up and operational and you can start any time.

just so people understand what a big deal this is, i ran some fast price comparisons. goodrx is an app that offers discounts on medications for which you have to pay out of pocket, whether because your insurance doesn’t cover them or because you don’t have insurance. if you don’t have insurance, goodrx is often about as good as it gets, so i’m using their prices for my comparison.

please note that prices are location dependent on goodrx—it shows you the options at pharmacies near your location. i’m in pittsburgh, pa; if you’re in a different part of the country and you try this, you may get slightly (or wildly) different numbers. 

fluoxetine is generic prozac. thirty 20mg capsules costs $12.80 at my cheapest local pharmacy. costplus has it for $3.90.

atorvastatin is generic lipitor. thirty 40mg tablets is $10.95 at my cheapest local pharmacy. costplus has it for $4.20.

omeprazole is generic prilosec. thirty 20mg capsules is $13.90 at the cheapest local pharmacy; $4.20 at costplus.

maybe that doesn’t seem like a huge discount, but the goodrx prices change *all the time*—last time i used it to buy fluoxetine, which was in the last couple of years, it was $31. also, many people are on multiple medications, or have multiple people in a household taking multiple medications, and $5 off every prescription adds up real fast. 

this is an objectively fantastic thing and a huge deal, and i hope they’re wildly successful.

while i do sometimes use fakespot in conjunction, i highly recommend using reviewmeta instead

no matter what algorithms used, its bound to make mistakes and flag ordinary things as suspicous, so being able to look at these things helps give the user a better idea of whats going on

fakespot doesnt really give you that information, whereas reviewmeta is completely transparent and lays out the data to let you determine whether somethings really suspicious or not. this blog post goes more into detail on that

people misunderstand what ‘gifted kid’ actually means but it’s ok it’s fine it’s cool it’s good

it’s not about actually being gifted, it’s about an initial higher scoring on standardized testing that means little to nothing or being good at learning in the way elementary and middle school wants you to, so you get marked as ‘advanced’. in reality, maybe you had faster development in certain areas, but the issue with being a gifted kid isn’t that “everyone told me I was so cool and special for reading and then I actually wasn’t :(” it’s “I wasn’t properly taught to handle things not coming easily to me, but the adults around me were counting on me not being a ‘difficult’ child in school.”

people who use it as some weird bragging method or interpret it that way are ignoring the way a lot of school systems force certain roles on students to simplify the learning process. If your kid doesn’t need to take notes to understand a science concept bc they get it naturally, well that’s good, but now you’re not teaching them how to take notes and they’re not learning that important soft skill. but because ‘gifted’ kids are easy and don’t show that they’re falling behind in learning in other categories that are harder to quantify, they eventually fall behind after that catches up to them. It’s about the failures of a one size fits all school system trying to compensate in the worst way possible.

And also the thing where ‘gifted’ kids are super likely to also be neuroatypical, which they don’t get screened for because they appear to be doing well in school. Or “You can’t be ADHD/autistic/etc, because you’re doing so well in school!”. Or being shamed for developing mental health issues/generally not being able to keep up with school work later, because you USED TO BE able to do it just fine.

Or the assumption that just because you can read well or you like math class, you’re somehow more EMOTIONALLY mature than your little kid brain is actually capable of being.

Or gifted kids whose parents and teachers put immense pressure on them to Do Great Things and Save The World and you’re like. “I’m 10 and I have no idea how to do that, but everyone is saying that’s my job?”.

This is the best “gifted kid” post out there. I never took notes until college because I didn’t have to, snd when it got challenging I had to literally teach myself note taking at age 18. It also fucks with your perception of asking for help - you’re advanced, you’re competent, you should be able to understand every topic easily. Asking for help/going to office hours/asking for a tutor feels like failing when you were praised in your early years for not needing to do that.

A new COVID-19 vaccine, developed by researchers from the Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, is being offered patent-free to vaccine manufacturers across the world. Human trials have shown the vaccine to be safe and effective, with India already authorizing its use as production ramps up to over 100 million doses per month. The vaccine has been named Corbevax and it is based on a traditional protein-based technology that has been safely used for decades. Like other COVID-19 vaccines, Corbevax focuses on the coronavirus spike protein, but instead of using mRNA to direct our cells to produce those spike proteins internally it delivers lab-grown spike proteins to the body. The researchers took the gene that codes for the spike protein and engineered yeast to produce it. These proteins are collected, purified, and combined with an adjuvant to enhance immune responses. This exact method has been used to produce the hepatitis B vaccine for years. “Protein-based vaccines have been widely used to prevent many other diseases, have proven safety records, and use economies of scale to achieve low-cost scalability across the world,” says Maria Elena Bottazzi, one of the lead researchers on the project.

It can not be overstates how important it is that this vaccine can be stored in a normal refrigerator  and is easy to produce with affordable standard equipment that is already available almost everywhere because low-income countries have been using this same equipment to create hepatitis B vaccines. As a result, production cost will also be low: about $1.5 - $2 per dose.

Other cool things:

They deliberately made the vaccine vegan and halal to make sure more people are willing to take it.

These researchers aren’t just doing this because they’re ‘too late to cash in’. They have a track record of releasing patent-less vaccines and for the last two decades have focused on creating vaccines that are considered ‘not profitable enough’, like vaccines for parasites that primarily occur in low-income regions.

Emergency

I'm being driven crazy. The harrassment is unending. Emergency rental relief has been delayed by my landlord's refusal to participate. My Thanksgiving/Early Christmas sale yielded one sale that etsy hasn't remitted yet and was less than $50. Which to be clear, I'm supremely grateful, it just didn't catch my rent up.
