A few thoughts on Trill xenobiology part 2, now with a look at some subspecies! Also a doodle of Ezri on the second pic that I drew forever ago and never got a chance to post.
The core idea behind these designs is that i imagine Trill hatchlings are born blind and the back of their head "blooms" once they are weaned to reveal their prehensile "hair", which helps them navigate the world around them independently. The "petals" then either stay the way they are or keep growing throughout the individual's life, sometimes taking on complex shapes (like a goat's horns). Variations in spots patterns and coloration also impacts the way different Trills interact with one another, considering that they use their fluorescent spots to communicate. In the case of deep sea Trills (bottom right), their language remains a mystery. They have little to no contact with the surface and generally don't respond to attempts at communication, although they are known to have a rich, if secretive, culture.
