Very Silly Concept: a show called "Accessibility Nightmares" but it's structured exactly like Kitchen Nightmares. An accessibility specialist goes to different establishments and helps them make their businesses more accessible.

The accessibility specialist asks why the door at the top of the small set of stairs has a wheelchair symbol on it. The owner replies that's the accessible bathroom. The camera zooms in on the specialist as they process this information.

A customer with a service dog comes in to a restaurant. The hostess tells them they don't allow dogs. The accessibly specialist looks over at the hostess like

And there are web accessibility episodes too. The accessibility specialist stares at the white text on the light pink background of the home page like

The specialist asks why not a single product picture has alt text, and the business owner says "Well I mean, it's makeup, why would a blind person be shopping for makeup?" The specialist just

The specialist asks the web designer how a screen reader user is supposed to complete the captcha portion of the password reset process when there is no audio alternative. The designer admits they don't know.

this, but only if we get to yell at them like Gordon does.

Oh, 100%. In my head the accessibility specialist is actually still just inexplicably Gordon Ramsay. I was having a delightful time the other day imagining "your videos have auto-generated captions?" being said in the exact same way Gordon says "you're serving them frozen fish???"

But having the specialist be Ramsay-esque would be crucial, I think. On all accounts; just as Gordon is always patient and polite with the waiters and waitresses, the specialist would be patient and polite with the store staff answering questions about the accessibility options they do not control. But on the flip side, if the person who is in charge is being unnecessarily difficult or just straight up ableist, there is likely to be some yelling and dramatic background music involved.

“transition poses some ethical questions. Such as, from what age should you be allowed to irreversibly change your body.“

This of course completely ignores the fact that puberty makes irreversible changes to your body. But let us just rephrase the question: “from what age do you gain bodily autonomy?” Now it gets very easy to answer: From the moment you’re fucking born.

I’m sorry, I’m reblogging this twice in a row it is that important

Stand up and say it again for the people in the back row.

This is all completely true and correct, of course, but on the topic of changes that irreversibly change a child’s body, prithee, go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

If you start ballet at 16, you are too old to ever expect to be able to do it seriously. If you start at 12 you’re too old. If you want to do ballet as a serious thing, as a career, you need to start at like eight years old or even younger, because your bones and joints need to be trained while they’re still flexible in order for you to be able to perform many of the required motions and stances of ballet. In particular, you need to be able to perform turnout of the hips, but all of your joints in your legs and feet will be affected, and this irreversibly changes your body.

And yet! Nobody talks about this as a negative thing! Little girls say they want to be ballet dancers, and if their parents have enough money, that’s what they get to be! Does it cause problems in later life? Yeah, sometimes! Often, even! But nobody talks about that because it’s a thing for cis people to do and so naturally it’s all fine!

Go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

Even common everyday sports do this. If you play soccer for a few consecutive years sometime between the ages of 8 and 15 it will permanently affect your knees. If you play a lot of soccer and for longer it will affect the entirety of legs, muscle and bone, and not for the better. Almost every soccerplayer in the world has a shortening of the back of the thigh muscle that will cause pain as they age. Most develop severe knee problems by the age of 30. People don’t age out of sports in general around 30 because they’ve “passed their prime physical condition” in the sense that age has taken it’s toll, but in the sense that the sport itself has taken it’s toll. And yet, no one is advocating against letting children play sports.

Today my art history professor gave some words of wisdom:

Nude is when your clothes are off. Naked is when your clothes are off and you’re up to something

"Arts 'N Crass" [S2 Ep01]

Fucking LOVED this episode cuz I 100% expected Daria's mom to side with the principle cuz she's the adult. It was refreshing to see a parent stand up for their kid instead of blindly siding with the fellow authority figure

Just so like... it's clear... anyone who censors words that contain "man" or "men" to anything like "xxn" that's TERF shit.

Any reference to women/womanhood that solely revolves around having a uterus or "womb" is TERF shit.

Any sentence where the OP says they support people being "trans identified" with quotes around ""transwomen"" or ""transmen"" is TERF shit.

I'm seeing a lot of you baby Tumblr gays out there not knowing what these specific TERF dogwhistles look like.

"Wombxxn" is an incredibly dumb way of spelling "woman" that treats the word "man" like a slur and also reduces women to their ability to give birth.

"Trans identified" is their way of saying "this person calls themselves trans, but I don't believe they are."

Saying "People should be allowed to identify however they wish, but we still need to protect women/children" IS TERF SHIT.

Learn to identify this garbage, because not all TERFs are going to spell out their intolerance for you. Some of them are going to try and seem reasonable and polite and normal, and it's fucking dangerous to our community.

Also unpack any internalized transphobia and your transmedicalism, because both those things will have you quickly siding with TERFs and bigots.

It appears to me a lot of people's impression of Sherlock Holmes' drug use out of context is "he's running around solving murders while coked out of his mind" which is really funny BUT!

As someone who reads acd canon & has the autistic urge to correct people about my interests, I'd like to let it be known that he actually primarily uses drugs between cases, because he gets painfully bored with nothing to do, stating "my mind rebels at stagnation." This is because he has adhd but the diagnosis hadn't been invented yet. Anyway

This can still be funny because it means the rest of the time he's acting like that while completely sober. He's just quirky. He IS a cokehead but it actually calms him down. Because he needs adderall

You may hear "Sherlock Holmes does cocaine" and think "oh, that explains why he's so fucking weird" but you would have it backwards. He does cocaine because he's already just Like That. He does this specifically when he's understimulated. They didn't have adhd meds in victorian london he's taking whatever stimulants are available. And That's why he's coked out of his mind. But Not while currently working on a case, because that keeps him busy

*note: I have adhd I know how it is

In a statement to The Post, a spokesperson for NBCUniversal claimed the tree work is simply an annual ritual at this time of year. “We understand that the safety tree trimming of the Ficus trees we did on Barham Blvd. has created unintended challenges for demonstrators, that was not our intention. In partnership with licensed arborists, we have pruned these trees annually at this time of year to ensure that the canopies are light ahead of the high wind season,” they wrote. “We support the WGA and SAG’s right to demonstrate and are working to provide some shade coverage. We continue to openly communicate with the labor leaders on-site to work together during this time.”

If those trees were pollarded annually, the cut areas would NOT look like that. There would be big knobs of old growth at the trimming sites. Not seeing any of that here. The way those trees were topped (not pollarded, which is a very careful process that has to begin when the tree is immature) is excellent way to kill them due to loss of hydration, open sites to infection and parasitism during the best time of year for both, lack of nutrition due to so little greenery and new budding growth being left, sunburn and other exposure damage, and a myriad of other possibilities. Plus, if they were topped annually, they would not have the lovely drooping branches seen in the other picture but would have tons of vertical suckers instead.

This is what an annually pollarded mature tree should look like:

If this was done by the city, the public works arborists should be protesting in front of city hall and screaming their heads off right now. I'm not hearing about that, so... Tree law!

Update and confirmation of Imminent Tree Law:

He mentions later in the thread that not only do they not trim the trees annually, they’re trimmed at best once every 18 years. Supposed to be every five, and only in dormancy, which even my layman’s ass knows about tree trimming.

And yes, Universal can probably eat the fine. But it’s gonna be a whopper even if the trees survive (which is as mentioned kinda unlikely), California is a triple damage state for tree law, and it may increase dramatically if there were nesting birds in the trees.

All this to be a Captain Planet filler villain to some writers. And yes, it’s currently just the writers officially picketing there; SAG-AFTRA recommended against it for petty bullshit like this and the suddenly necessary sidewalk construction.

oh yeah they city did an investigation and found that no permits for trimming the trees were issued

terfs keep mentioning the % of autistics who are trans/nb and that we're 'brainwashed'

and because i'm an asshole, i decided to look into why so many autistic folks are trans/nb. it's not an inaccurate statement, at least the first half, but terfs lie through their teeth so i decided to get to the scientific root of it.

the answer blew my fucking mind.

the study on gender and autism i found said two very specific things about autistic people: we are more mentally resistant to things like social conditioning and binarism. we like our secret third things, y'know.

an excerpt:

“The finding that non-binary identities are most elevated seems to support hypotheses focussed on autistic resistance to social conditioning, which are consistent with existing evidence of the same effect with respect to self-description of sexual orientation. Perhaps elevated rates of trans identity in autism might result from a rejection of the binary cisgenderist norm, which combined with a below-typical concern for social norms could promote the disclosure of the identity.”

94% of autistics surveyed for that paper identified themselves as non-binary.

other studies have found autistic people have higher levels of critical thinking, and require more evidence to maintain or convert to a belief system (hence why many of us eventually fall away from religion) than allistic people.

which means, at least from my perspective, that:

a) the 'brainwashing' terfs are accusing the trans community of inflicting on autistic folks would likely not even work if they tried.

b) the current binary definition of gender flies directly against embedded autistic modes of thinking to begin with.

you cannot brainwash someone into thinking something they already believe.

This essentially suggests that autistic people are likely to be NB because we are in fact resistant to the relevant brainwashing.

Almost suggest that if you took any human out of existing human culture today and let them do what was most natural to them from birth, they would -in at least about 90% of cases- come out of it identifying themselves as non binary compared to the general human concepts of gender... Suggests it is largely ONLY social conditioning and social constructs and societal pressure that maintains any illusion of a binary at all. Or something.
